Also remember that the haze can go anywhere from 70 days to 120, so plan according to growth pattern.

your insights are right on the money. heres some cool info for you on sulfur compounds in cannabis. i normally dont like hype strains, but having grown gelato 33 it def reeks.

Discovery of new compounds solves mystery of cannabis’ pungent smell

A new study is offering one of the most comprehensive investigations ever conducted into the chemical origins of cannabis' unique “skunk-like” smell. The study reveals an entirely new family of sulfur compounds accounts for the novel odor and these molecules are chemically similar to aroma…
newatlas.com
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsomega.1c04196

the first link is an article summary the second is the full paper. continuing on the soil, not only the content of fungi/bacteria facilitates, but also the swampy nature comes into play as well. using skunk cabbage as a comparison, the sulfur compounds thrive in acidic aerobic environments. so the boggy ness is key. now calcium oxalate is mentioned in the article as a key component of the skunk cabbage leaf which aids in plant protect, but also encourages the formation of these compounds. now a lot of plants which have volatile sulfur compounds deploy them in order to attract specific rare pollinators ie beetles and flies as opposed to bees butterfly etc. the carrion odor produced for these pollinators mimic smell of dead/decaying odors which these pollinators thrive on. in fact skunk cabbage is thermogenic- able to produce its own heat source which increases the range and content of these compounds for attraction. in this way the hps and high temperatures mentioned certainly amplified the smells. i find it interesting that kentucky/ohio/ virginia were many times the source of these rks acclimated lines. in the 1800s chinese hemp was brought in to kentucky. this is relevant because asian hemp as been shown to produce piperdine, which as a member of the amine family has incredibly pungent smell and attracts flies. is it possible that there was admixture with the afghan/mexican hybrids in these areas? and did the specific anaerobic bacteria in the swampy environment cause the skunk lines to transform and metabolize these asian hemp like profiles.

the article also points out the similarity between garlic/onion and skunk smell. these profiles are found in guerrero landraces, and according the sam the ratman, the Colombian gold x afghan hybrid was put to aco gold as the final step for sk1. since a golds close proximity to guerrero , maybe the Mexican component is more important .mountain organics has the real deal a gold and has used "beaver musk" to describe its profile. outside of the roadkill name, rks description sometimes skips over the skunk part. to me, the immediate and drastic skunk musk odor of roadkill is mostly due to all of the skunk musk being released at once due to the pressure of being run over. sulfur compounds and amines in plants are designed to attract far away pollinators in plants in the same way a skunks spray is immediately detected in animals as a deterrent. very cool research man

Maybe we should try growing our weed like garlic is grown to bring out that dank?

New Research Confirms How Cannabis Gets Its Skunky Smell

A deep dive into the chemical makeup of cannabis plants revealed a new class of compounds that contribute to the infamous skunky smell of cannabis strains.

I wish there was a soil company that had an all in one solution that was already charged with those volatile sulfur compounds. A soil specifically designed with sulfurs already in it and ready for growing skunk weed. Everything is loaded with lots of other stuff but never saw a product with everything included. I have seen the Mr. Fulvic but that's an additive Im talking about a bagged soil thats has the VSCs inside ready to grow.

I know it's sad. You'r right the SD back in the day was gas for days now even that is watered down. The real skunk is slowly making a comeback I have smelled it a handful of times recently around town at concerts and out front of bars and what not. Most everything smells like kush but every once in a while I will get a smell of some really hot skunk and it will perk my nose up. It exists just very hard to get a hold of and even harder to get a cut. Im working on it LOL

I also like Skunk. I once made a run with Super Skunk and Skunk#1 from Sensiseeds. Both were good genetics.
In Europe Amsterdam based SensiSeeds had/has the best Skunk seeds since the 90s as far as i know.
They still sell skunk regulars in different variations. I think in Europe they got the best skunk mothers.

I have to agree with I_GRWO_SKUNK on this one. Don't get me wrong Sensiseeds is a legit breeder and possibly many decades ago they did have some real skunk in Europe however since then all of the breeding has changed the Skunk genetics into sweet skunk. Both Super Skunk and Skunk #1 now are fruity sweet variations. The true skunk were discussing in this forum is very acrid and nasty smelling with virtually no hint of sweetness at all. Its very nasty and rude and it's so smelly that it absolutely reeks and permeates everywhere. Once you smell the real deal you will know immediately what Im talking about. I have grown dozens upon dozens of so called "skunk" from many breeders over recent years and absolutely NONE of it smelled like the skunk from back when I was a teenager in the late 90s early 2000s. It was even better in the 80s but I wasn't of age yet then however we were still piggybacking off those genetics when I first started smoking. Right now Im hunting through about a dozen skunk varieties and so far the two hottest ones are the 1996 skunk from I_GROW_SKUNK and also the 1990s San Diego Catpiss. The stem rubs on both of those are wicked nasty you defoliate a few leaves and your hands reek you gotta wash your hands just from touching the waterleaves while still in veg. In flower they are gonna stink right through the carbon filters. Thats the difference between oldschool terpenes and all the newer European stuff its literally night and day they aren't even in the same league.

We all want that skunk but for real. I'm young but I have smoked some skunky funk back in 2014. I still know the guy but not sure if he still have that same exact clone clones into new moms the past years, probably not .. altough I got a blueberry skunk clone from him a few months ago hoping its some DANK

the last few years not a single seed I have grown smelled like back then, other than skunk I feel like the smell is not loud like it used to . I think something is altering the good genes . must be because of the xxLoudBagSmoke x 2005 kush x green crack x dadUncle x hypeseed xP Chuck x backflipchad kush x f#ckboy muffins and raids??
when i was like 9 I remember rednecks driving down the street and it smelled like straight SKUNK but I did not know it was weeed at that time lol

I think more people should grow out bag-seed from good bud, keep those runts around for harvest, and only clone something when you find something very special. Back in the day there was no take your pick 10,000 strains and designer seeds to choose from. All the best stuff came from random bag seeds including OG Kush, Sour Diesel, Skunk etc. I think that is the trick. Flower those runts, grow those hermies out…that’s where they’re hiding.

The key is to grow out the old bagseed. So if someone has an uncle or parent in their 60s you wanna see if they can find an old tin can in the basement full of some old crispy flower with seeds in it. Probably a very low likelihood of germination but thats where the skunk will come from you gotta go back in time and try to find some genetics from the 70s or 80s or 90s that haven't been crossed with anything since. Either some old Mexican or perhaps some old Afghan stuff. It's incredible to think that the skunk has disappeared but it's totally true. It's not that it went missing or lost overnight what happened is it was slowly but surly crossbred with new genetics over the decades. A tiny minute change every time it was crossed. Think of it like having a really strong liquid substance like a liquor or brew. It starts out strong but then every day you add 1 drop of plain water to the mixture. At first you don't notice the difference you still drink it and enjoy it. However after putting 1 drop of water in everyday over time the brew eventually gets watered down. Its so gradual that you don't even realize its happening in the moment but fast forward the clock far enough then at some point you'r basically just drinking water. It's not liquor anymore it's been entirely watered down and become only a fraction of what it once was. This is what happened to skunk it took a really long time but it's been completely ruined. Only was to resurrect those super hot Thiol Ester terpenes is to find some old uncrossed bag-seeds that haven't been cut or watered down over the decades.

I mean, I have a really nice selection of 80's Skunk bud. I wouldn't say it's lost anymore. Maybe someone will get a crop done and report to everyone what all they found. I know a couple people were waiting to pop them as soon as room comes available in the garden.

I am over 60 years old, raised in Tn. I've smoked Panama Red, Columbian Gold,Michoacon and other "Known cuts". I had RKS or something like it. very skunky. It was88 1988 in Houston I smoked a J in my Apt. doorway & my girl at the time, in a back bedroom, hollars at me, I smell a skunk! I replied, really? I could smell it too, really skunky. I have 2 Trainwreck seeds 1 day into veg after the seedling stage & hope for winners in both of them. They are "gifted" ILGM seeds and hope is all I have, well that and TSP x3 for this my 6th run in Coco/perlite. Happy Hunting,SS

Nice brother! As my title of this thread states the Trainwreck is a really good one. There was some wicked skunky TW going around back in the day. I hope you find a champion!

Yeah your 90s skunk is pretty stinky in veg. I have high hopes for it I will be posting more pics once we begin transitioning into flower.
