Ok so if I said “smells like those 90’s troll dolls” would you guys know what I mean? There was a certain way the rubber they were made out of smelled, probably scented at the factory.

My brother said it tastes and smells like old school Sour D but I always interpreted it as a fuel smell and usually paired with a grapefruit note. I wonder has my perception changed since becoming a weed connoisseur snob or do these sound like two different smells.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the taste and smell it’s great… but just curious if anyone would know what I meant if I said “smells and taste like those old school troll dolls from the 90s” lol.

That smell to me was always like burnt plastic mixed with alcohol.

I actually kind of know what you'r talking about. My younger sister had a bunch of those troll dolls when we were kids and they have a plastic smell from the factory and Im pretty sure the manufacturer added some type of perfume scent to them to make them smell more peasant rather than like a pair of sneakers lol

Thanks.......I don't know what prompted me to take them, maybe i kind of knew that I'd want to have a record of it. I had to take polaroids because even though it probably wouldn’t have happened, I wasn't gonna have some place developing a roll of film that had pictures of plants.......it was a much more paranoid time.

Oh I get it, trust me. I'm 37 and grew up in Oklahoma. If you were caught with plants in the 90's, it was mandatory 10 years even for a few personal plants. They would think your scum of the Earth... Welcome to the bible belt

I mean.....I don't know if you got to have Skunk #1 in the 80s, but of course, like many other people, I'm looking for as close to the original Skunk#1 as possible. There are some sieeds sellers, and some "original" players who claim that their Skunk is based off of seeds they got 30+ years ago.........maybe. Who knows? Unless someone knows someone or has access to original genetics........

Well I posted my genetics origin story in the first few pages and probably every other page after that lol. The basic jist is, my uncle got his skunk seeds in 1991 in Mexico. Bright them back and grew them the next year and taught himself to grow the next 10-11 years before he passed away and left me the seeds in 2002. I been trying to preserve it now for 13-15 years now, once I realized it wasn't around anymore.

I read it.... ;). Mexico does seem like an odd place to get original Skunk#1 seeds from, but it certainly could be......it either is, or isn't. It's not just "smells terrible", or like dead meat, it has a distinctive smell, a bit like sour perfume before it's really ripe, then various levels of that unmistakeable skunk smell. There are probably a few people from the Netherlands and the US who were lucky enough and/or smart enough to preserve the genetics.......and preserving them properly.....I don't know who has the closest original true Skunk#1 seeds........if you have some..........please..? ;).

I've bought some from a few different places. The proof is in the pudding, I'm going grow them and see how close they are.

Skunk#1 is what I think I have before the watering down of genetics. Looking back now, the first few summers I grew it, almost every single plant was different. I found nuances of cheese, skunk, wintergreen, pine, earthiness and Chem as the most dominate/commonly expressed Terpenes, and I found everything else under the sun to varying degrees. Durban poison anise smell, Northern lights, white widow licorice root all the way to blueberry. I think Skunk#1 was just a mutt of all the different kinds of good cannabis they could find at the time, just blended together.

I think.......the original Skunk#1 was pretty stable. That's a lot of variety to get if you were working with inbreeding real Skunk#1.....

What I don't know is what happens/happened when it's inbred many, many times.......there also might be a right way/wrong way to preserve a strain....the more seeds you have, the better, isolating an exceptional male, selecting a certain numbet of females that truly represent the strain, having the space and number of seeds to be able to do it.........maybe using clones and having fewer generations helps, maybe itself more about generations of selection, I don't know........

If someone kept inbreeding Skunk#1, would some plants eventually exhibit the qualities of Columbian Gold, Afghani......the genes that led up to Skunk#1.......

Of course, if someone had tge iriginal genetics 35 years ago, made 100 seeds and stored them exfeptionally well, then you can certainly say those would be the truest Skunk#1 genetics.....

I also wonder why it couldn't be recreated. It's not like it was a blend of 27 different varieties........it was....3? Someone can't try various combinations (especially if someone can outright replicate the "recipe") to at some point nail that same result? Or was Skunk#1 a total shot in the dark? A one in a million possibility that just happened to happen but can't happen again...?

That's what I'm saying. It can't be recreated because there was like 35 unique phenos out of say 50 seeds. The strain was a mutt. I believe Mexican farmers took all the new hype strains and blended it with their current collection. Just my opinion though, after seeing how wide open this was. I even got plenty of haze varieties to pop up in the beginning. It was crazy seeing all the different phenos.

I don't know who originally created it......Skunkman Sam, Neville......who was the one who crossed the Columbian Gold with the Afghani x Thai.......or maybe a Mexican strain in there, I'd have to look it up, but someone did it, someone created the strain just like DJ Short created Blueberry. The Skunk#1 I bought in 1988 was a true, stable strain.......maybe not stable like a landrace, I don't mean that, but it was a clearly developed/invented strain. From there.......then it got tossed around and the genetics faded........with the exceotions if whoever saved the original genetics, or at least worked on inbreeding them slowly enough and well enough that one could say "yep, that's a very good examole of a Skunk #1"

I honestly think now where I have the strain, it's not appropriate to call it Skunk#1, but rather Skunk Bud or Road Kill Skunk. Smells just like you drove past a dead skunk in the road. I mean identical.

If it stinks like a skunk......I mean, we could be splitting hairs here......there are different kinds of "smells bad"......garbage, feces.....but Skunk#1 was distinct, unique, unmistakable. Sour diesel stinks......it is not Skunk #1. If you have a strain that smells just like it, well, you're probably 90% there. The rest would be how it grows........and if the shoe fits.....

I think the splitting of hairs your referring to could most likely be explained by phenotypical selection by the grower. That plays a massive role in how a line turns out. However, if you run enough seeds from the same filial parents, you'll see all sorts of outliers from stuff that could have been dominate thousands of years ago. I think now we are making so many strains on a national level, we could pheno hunt probably until the end of Earth as we know, and we still haven't hunting through everything fully... It will be interesting once federal legalization takes hold to see what kind of cool shit people been hoarding in their collection over all these years

I think every seed that came from good bud should be grown. I can’t believe how identical my Sour Power is from the bud it came from…but I swear it’s even better. I have a couple real Blue Magoo seeds that came from the buds I smoked. Only 2 or 3, but if I get anything similar to it I’ll be stoked. Not to mention Afgoo and Blueberry alone…anything from those genetics is probably amazing.

First time growing bag seed but if this trend continues I won’t ever buy seeds again…just have assortments of different phenos every grow lol.

I like the attitude but it think you should switch it up and get hype seeds sometimes too. Some of the hype stuff is straight Fuego!. Would be a shame to never try some of them. Others are disappointing but ultimately, as long as you have decent beans, you'll be able to trade for something different, from someone, somewhere once federal goes legal

The original Skunk from back in the day is rumored to have some Mexican in the line. Most people talk shit on Mexican weed and that's usually because the growers down there were pumping out dirt weed due to poor growing practices accompanied by poor packaging and hot car rides during the ride up above the boarder. However from a purely genetic perspective some REALLY skunky cannabis genes were floating around Mexico back in the 70s and 80s. The fact that I_Grow_Skunk's genetics are sourced from Mexico is actually a good thing IMO it leads me to believe that the seeds likely were some legit skunk bud that was preserved.

The problem is I don’t know where the hype seeds are… it seems a lot of people hype up mediocre stuff. I found Humboldt Seed Company and after growing them just stuck with a few of theirs…and my bag seed of course lol… but I ended up with something incredible. It smells like a fresh Nag Champa incense stick when you break it up, smells like a smudge stick when burnt (like burning sage) and tastes like incense and cloves. The buds are jet black with big thick bright orange hairs and glittery with trichomes. Never experienced anything like it and it doesn’t fit the descriptions or diaries I’ve read. No clue where their genetics originated either, they keep it a secret apparently. But the high is very nice, floaty, clear and wonderful. Like being buzzed off a couple glasses of wine.
