While precautions should be taken when applying it, imo it’s the lesser of two evils compared with spraying or adding a foreign or chemical substance to fight off an infestation later on.

A little preventative maintenance goes a long way with store bought soils and it’s been an invaluable tool for keeping critters out of my garden over the years.

I will take more precautions for sure but I don’t think I’ve been exposed to it to the same degree a wine maker would be. Nor is it needed very often. A little in the soil mix and then a dusting if you notice critters coming from the soil later on and it doesn’t affect the taste or smell of the plant.

So imo the pros outweigh the cons but each situation is different and it may not be ideal for everyone.

I like the fact that it’s natural. However that doesn’t mean it’s safe to inhale. But compared to spraying pesticides on my plants I’d rather treat the soil and get the source of the problem under control than to fight them with more invasive options later on. But that’s me personally. Results may vary :-)

Oh I am by no means attempting or suggesting DE isn't a valuable tool for we farmers. It is an excellent way to control pests. I am just wanting others to know there are some dangers involved in breathing the stuff. But it isn't anything a particle mask cannot help with. Just looking out . Used to be a safety dude. :D

I am interested in possibly adding beneficial bacteria, microbes or predators as a means of an alternative control method. I just don’t have much experience with those yet and am still collecting info on them. Once I find a method that works I will certainly consider making changes for the positive if the results are favorable.

Oh for sure and I appreciate it. I had no idea. I mean I knew it wasn’t good for you as it’s a fine powder and all I just didn’t know it was as harmful as that report was suggesting. So I do appreciate the info. More info is always a good thing and I’ll certainly take more precautions using it :-)

I'll def mix some into the soil nxt time just for safetys sake.only thing ive had this grow is gnats and aphids earlier but all gone now.i have predator earth mites on plants every now and then.ive had them since start .most ive seen at any one time is 3 .i was putting de down at first till i realised what they were..thanks for the tip on de as i was using it in surrounding areas around plants heavily and was like a smoke bomb going off lol..hangs around for ages.mask nxt time for me..

It seems like DE and friendly predators are a little counter to each other. From what I understand, DE is like little shards that get into the working parts of bugs and they dehydrate and expire. Perhaps use DE in surrounding areas like the floor and put predator bugs in the soil?

I use them both. Sea Green and Alg a Mic for kelp and BioBizz Aloe for aloe vera. I use the sea Green in my fert mixtures and the alg a mic in my additives mix. I use about 5 different mixtures based on what I think they need. Mostly water except for the two fert Solutions (grow and bloom). One mix is just additives. One is just plain water. One has Herculean Harvest and recharge. The plants seem to like it and I typically feed every 4th or 5th watering. Maybe once a week to 10 days.

Awesome best thing i love about it is i can either foliar or drench and apply twice a week.something you cant do with ferts that are applied every fortnight.nothing wrong with that but i like to keep the norishment up..i too like to give them other things when i think they need it..
