Study: THC levels reach record high
by Pierre Bertrand l Daily Texan (U. Texan)
Issue date: 10/1/08 Section: News

University of Mississippi researchers have found that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active chemical in marijuana, has reached record levels in the United States.

The University's Potency Monitoring Project compared current marijuana samples to some seized since 1975 from 48 states. The highest level of concentration in a single sample of the chemical during the project was 37.2 percent. The average amount currently in a single sample is 9.6 percent, a 4 percent increase since 1983, according to the report.

"[Research data] indicates that [marijuana] is a more potent drug and that it's certainly not the drug from years ago," said Jane Maxwell, a research scientist in the School of Social Work.

Because of high THC levels achieved through selective breeding of the marijuana plant, individuals are more moody, show depression when marijuana use is restricted and develop an addiction to THC, said Austin Police Department Sgt. Richard Burns.

Individuals who smoke daily and inhale a greater amount of THC in one sitting are at risk of health hazards that include respiratory and mental defects, Maxwell said.

"I think it is a drug that has changed its composition, and I think smoking a blunt compared to a joint is another factor," Maxwell said. "People are smoking a lot more in a cigar than in a joint."

Trends in Austin have suggested that the increased levels of THC adversely affect younger individuals, developing adolescents and pregnant women, Burns said.

"What is important is that the literature is beginning to document people who are experiencing cognitive problems with cannabis use," Maxwell said. "And studies are showing that more and more potent cannabis is becoming available."

With the increased potency of marijuana, the public needs to change its outlook on the use of marijuana and view it as they would traditionally harder drugs, Maxwell said.

"I think people need to be aware that with the increased potency, you could become a misuser," she said.

Those of us who've been toking a while are known to "titrate the dose." We also know that even if we get stupid high it's gonna pass in a little while. So wtf?

The whole sack of shit about strong pot being "another drug entirely" is getting as tired as gateway drug, amotivational syndrome and the whole cesspool of scare campaigns.

That said, where can I get some of that shit????!!!!????

What you guys are all forgetting about is this...

The highest level of concentration in a single sample of the chemical during the project was 37.2 percent. The average amount currently in a single sample is 9.6 percent, a 4 percent increase since 1983

9.6 is the average that they are testing at in the last year or two, not 37.2. I love how its somewhat skirted over but come on, if the average is 9.6 then what the hell are we worried about that clearly just demonstrates that 37.2% THC is a freak accident >.>

The gov is pro at making a "clinical" study , and allowing outcomes to validate whatever side of the fence they need validated ;to hype propaganda to fule the brainwashed majority... For desired effect and drive the conciousness of the nation. We all know the DEA needs to stand firm on their soap box. With the legal rock and a hard place the Feds have found themselves in its just another reason to try and get the majority to approve and vote their way. So here's more hype about how weed is the worst thing on earth.
There are so many reasons and facets to the anti weed movement, from lumber to pharma to the proverbial egg on the gov's face to name a few.
We just need to keep educating and stay active for our side of legalization and the truth about our friend MJ.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were true. I don't think it's necessarily propaganda. People create new strains all the time and some of those are with the desire to make them more and more potent. At the same time, growing techniques have been perfected which means plants are growing at close to their full potential.

Once again... qouting the same people that probably termed the phrase "reefer madness"
Ask yourself one thing before forming an opinion. How many people have everdosed on Oxycontin and died compared to the amount of people that OD on pot and die?
If THC causes such"mental instability" why aren't there mental hospital all over the place for the treatment of marijauna?
The governmet once again spreading propaganda and lies. They hate competitors when there is a bustling and profitable drug war destroying our southern border that is sponsord by our own government.
Don't drink the socialist kool-aid!
