An officer shot and killed a Southern California man's dog after it jumped from an open car window and lunged at officers who were taking the Rottweiler's owner into custody on suspicion of interfering with a SWAT stand-off.
Police arrested Leon Rosby, 52, near the scene of the SWAT stand-off in Hawthorne, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Rosby was walking his Rottweiler, Max, and recording the stand-off with armed robbers on his cell phone camera.
"I never meant my dog to be killed and shot like that," Rosby said Tuesday. "He wasn't just shot. He was executed."
A statement from the Hawthorne Police Department detailed his alleged interference: "This interference included loud, distracting music (from the individual's vehicle), and his intentional walking within close proximity to armed officers, while holding an 80-pound Rottweiler on a long leash-line," the statement said.
The video, posted on YouTube (Warning: Disturbing Content), showed Rosby walking his dog along a sidewalk and recording officers on his cell phone. Another man who was also apparently recording the police incident was standing just a few feet away from Rosby, but he was not approached by officers.
Officers stared at Rosby for several seconds and began walking toward him. Rosby placed his dog into his car and, as officers approached, turned around and put his hands behind his back.
Rosby can be heard saying something about civil rights.
"They had asked me why am I there?" Rosby later told NBC4. "And I said I was filming them so that no one's civil rights were being violated."
The officers handcuffed him and the dog began barking out of one of the car's open windows. The dog jumped out and barked at the officers.
One of the officers reached toward the dog several times, apparently trying to grab its leash. The dog lunged at him and he fired four shots at the dog.
The Hawthorne Police Department statement continued, "Fearing that the attacking Rottweiler would imminently bite the officer(s), one officer fired his duty weapon several times, striking and killing the dog."
The dog fell to the ground, yelping and writhing in the street. The animal's owner, still handcuffed, cried out and his legs buckled.
The video is available on YouTube here. Warning: As previously described, it contains extremely disturbing content.
Michael Gulden, Rosby's attorney, said his client was targeted because he had a pending lawsuit against the Hawthorne Police Department. Rosby alleged that police beat him without cause.
"We'll be amending the complaint to include another excessive force action as well," Gulden said.

dude was stupid for walking around like that pointing his phone at police while SWAT was present. im surprised he didnt get shot at for the cops "mistaking" his phone for a gun. In all honesty, that man is the only one to be blamed. Curiosity killed the cat... or should i say dog in this case...
big fan of dogs and this vid fucked up my morning, but if i was holding a gun, and a dog was coming at me, i wouldnt think twice.

Cops should be worried about task at hand and stop this "hardass" attitude when other people gather at the scene(s)..no need to mean mug and confront people walking by, they serve the public supposedly but if u ask them a question or question there judgement etc..they jus do what they please, I hope that cop is fired and then ironically ripped apart by dogs

They dont want to be filmed or be on camera because they are not doing the right thing and dont want to have to face the consequences, simple as that.In socal they have begun a new policy that the news helicopters cant even film them anymore in the interest of ''officer safety'' supposedly which is bullshit, they just dont want the world to know how big of thugs they are.
The sad part of all this is that they shoot people everyday but this time because everyone loves animals everyone is pissed about it!what about all the people they shoot?and their not all guilty of something, look at all the innocent folks they shot while after christopher dorner that are getting paid off right now,THUGS.

The guy killed his own dog. Had he minded his own business and not been clowning around doing what he KNEW would draw a police response, that dog would be alive. Had he been back with the crowd his dog would be alive. He will sue and win for getting his dog killed.

The cops really didnt have a reason to cuff and frisk the guy. They could have just told him to get back with the group, or sent him on his way. When in the 'hood I am sure the cops were worried about safety and probably wanted to give the clown a taste of what happens when you clown. Dog comes at me Id shoot it too. I dont blame them for the shooting but they could have handled things differently to not exasperate the situation.

The only innocent one is the dog. The dog saw 2 guys he didnt know ruffing up his daddy. He reacted like any good animal should. Protect the family.

A taser wasn't an option? oh yeah... they only use tasers for 10 year autistic kids, pregnant moms and senile old folks.

for dogs and regular people, the pigs just shoot them dead. Nazism at its finest.

The guy with the dog has a civil rights lawsuit against that police dept for breaking his ribs last year and has filed 6 complaints alleging racial profiling and mistreatment, they recognized him and decided to teach him a lesson.Their were many others video taping the scene just like he was(including the guy who shot the video of the dog being killed) and the police did not say one word to them. They were 2 blocks away from the crime scene, the police claim they were arresting him for his car stereo being too loud?Get a grip, how dumb do they think people are.
