And also, out of curiosity, you never really see people doing ROLS with airpots, only with fabric pots, is there a reason for this? Are airpots not ideal for living soil or are they just not ideal for the recycled part. Or am I way of base here and they would be a great choice for recycling your living soil?

Also do people use cover crops on their first round of doing living soil or is that something to be done starting the 2nd or 3rd round kinda to rejuvinate the soil?

Lastly, if it is your first round doing a living organic soil should you even worry about any mulch?

They also till the soil, retain moisture, provide green manure, house beneficials and I've noticed act as a canary in a gold mine. They'll so nitrogen issues first and this will probably scare you but mites like them. They show mite damage right away and will signal you faster than cannabis because our canna leaves don't show damage as quick. Besides, it's purdy. Lol

Mulch is your saving grace. It provides moisture that your microbes need to not fall dormant. I use SIPs of perlite and bottom feed my containers so the mulch keeps my soil evenly moist which is what you need to have vigorous plants. I've not used it the past at all, used just dead mulch like leaves and living mulch. Living mulch is where it's at and dead mulch works well too but no mulch and I had all sorts of issues by the wet dry cycles.

I'll add that a green mulch like chia and clover add small flowers...
pollen is a food source for predators in the absence of prey...
the clover in particular is very similar to cannabis in terms of its root exudes and its preferred ph in the rhizosphere, so rhizosphere interactions between clovers actually strengthen and increase the size of the rizosphere of the cannabis plant

my plants seem to do best with the clover added. i'm not a fan of TP with the smarties thats for sure. the longer they grow in there, the harder it is to remove them. for this new set up I have, i'm planning on just one or two TPs max. the new plastic pots i have are doing really well. the drainage is great.

i just planted seeds of pot and clover all at the same time and they grew up all together. worked just fine. i leave a three inch area around the cannabis seed free of clover seed but most folks take fresh rooted clones and plant them straight into the final container with or without an established mulch. normally, before i tried that, i've been sprouting seeds in plug trays and TP into a container like this:

then i top dress with 1:1:1 ratio worm poo, compost, and pumice with some kelp, neem and crustacean meal. then i add straw. the layer above the seed can not be more than a inch or you won't get germination of the clover.

so now it looks like this:

if you're using a small container like a 3 gallon, you shouldn't add clover or at least i wouldn't because theres such a snug fit for roots in that. what i read was that you need at LEAST a 5 gallon and really they don't suggest anything less than 10 gallons.

my final pot for this is going to be a 20 gallon. i used to grow in 100 gallon beds. i started growing that way last september. my first round i brought home broad mites. second round was better but i was still learning, third round went great and i'm guessing i got a 1/4 pound in a 100 gallon. i don't have a scale. can you believe that?? i told myself that when i harvested last i would buy one for the next time but then i got the mites which i have been battling since late december. so i haven't been able to harvest something that wasn't attacked by BM and major newb errors.

i can veg like a mutha Fer tho. LOL

sorry i can't tell ya. i've just been stuck in veg for most of the year. :( things are picking up and plants are growing great so using this whole no till BAS system has given me the easiest time growing. the other rounds were different soil recipes. this one i think is better.


oh and you should use straw over hay because straw has a higher C:N ratio. :)

Well it looks like from one another project the Danny Boy is now producing pistills on the male, so I'll continue on to make selfing seeds as I have done before,... usually makes 3, hermi, femme, and true males true to the genetics,...I've noticed the spiritual nature of plants, if last of generation will try to save itself,... All plants are Darmic by nature, are servants to humanity...

whats jeremy charging and whats he givin these days? his last generic cover crop mix was pretty good, but some of the items required a bit of maintenance... i dont like havin to give my pots a haircut every other day like when I tried barley in my cover crop....

I still use plugs to start mostly... I always seem to get a couple potworms eating a few of my seeds when I use my soil...
