Thanks BH - got a friend coming over tomorrow with a cut of the mother TW, so between that cut and the reveg there's a good chance I can keep this pheno (if it's worth saving). Also got an OG Kush cut coming over as well :)

Day 92, Harvest (both TW, same pheno)
First up, thanks again to BH who gifted me these beans. I'm going to give what I think is an honest opinion, so I hope it goes without saying that there's no criticism of the breeder...just honest feedback for future development of the line, if BH is so inclined.
That was easily the most difficult harvest yet - two plants in 6.5l pots took about 4 hours I think....lost track of time. The buds didn't really fill in too much, although the trichs are incredible. To my relatively inexperienced mind this seems like an uber hash plant, not necessarily for the bud smoker....for the main reason that she's fairly impractical on a number of levels.
First up, this particular pheno I think could have even gone on longer, but it's hard to say - I think my 400w may not have been ideally positioned for these girls. For me and my farming buddies, that's just too long.
Secondly, the harvest was a total f0kker. Small buds are hard to trim, and there was SO much quality trichs on the trim....seemed almost a waste to trim the sweetleaf because it left not very much. My growing space isn't big enough for these girls, and the colas are SO huge that they really would benefit from side lighting imho. I'm fairly sure that an experienced grower with good side lighting could pull large yields....but a lot of my bud isn't really what I would call quality because it didn't get enough light. I didn't think you could have too big a cola, but you can if you don't have the lighting to cover it all!
I'm still deeply in love with the smell. It's one of the nicest green smells I have ever experienced. So far it hasn't carried into taste, and it gets a menthol vim flavour with minimal drying/curing. I've not smoked anything properly dried yet, so am holding fire on posting opinion on the quality of the smoke yet....but all tests have been great....strongly uppy with a unique taste and lasting buzz....very treble and very sharp.
Ok, so to wrap this ramble up....I took the decision this evening not to continue this cut by revegging. Even if the smoke is stellar (which I strongly suspect it is), she's just too much of a handful for me. Am really looking forward to the smoke though.
Ah yes, one more thing - I've got a 12l B&Q bucket full of the top immature buds that didn't make the grade. Going to make some interesting hash I think.
Will post a smoke report in a week or so, or whenever it's ready for a proper caning. Thanks again BH....it has been a wild ride and a real learning experience. I've learned loads from growing her, and I'm sure probably a lot more than if I'd have grown something easier and more manageable.
FF
p.s. that glove hash peeled off and fucked me and STL up bigstyle in a j....I coughed my ring up...and then some....

WOW, Now that's a super nice harvest. Awesome job with that trainwreck. Bet she yielded nicely. I know a few people pulling down some nice weight with tw these days. It's all about vegging. If you veg right, your looking at some nice yields.
Great job and thanks for the awesome pictures.
Take care,

Some quick photos from the tops that are being dried for a bubble hash run - once it's dry I'll freeze it overnight and then do the ice/bucket/drill with mixer bit/bubblebags thing. No idea what the quality of the hash will be like - there's plenty of trichs but they're all clear. Figured I'd give it a go rather than just bin it...?

Interesting plant indeed. Sorry she turned out to be such a troublesome gal.
The hash should be top notch, the TW hash I made was some of the best I've ever produced, very very potent and tasty.
One lil tip on getting the goo off the gloves - pop em in the freezer for an hour or two so it freezes solid, then it's dead easy to peel off the gloves.
The one thing that confuses me about your plant is the time she took to finish, should have been 70 days, so not sure what's happened there. I did do a TW x Actual Sativa cross that went 11-12 weeks and maybe one of those beans got mixed in with the TW ones? I have some TW seedlings in veg now, when I get em cloned and sexed, I can always get a cut of a productive pheno to ya. I reckon what you have there is pure TW, just a recessive pheno, I guess this is great evidence why GHS TW is more indica - they didn't want people getting such wild expressions so added some indica to it.
Whole point of giving testers to people is to see what they get, good or bad, many thanks for taking the time to document this grow!
Here's a few pics from the test runs done by Marijuanamat and A Bird In The Air, they both had much more manageable plants, so again, I'm sorry you had such a wild one!

That last pic is what your classic Arcata pheno TW should look like if grown untopped, that's the one Marijuanamat chose as his keeper, the one that really stinks like a mentholated dead whale, this is the pheno I chose to make those beans that mat and FF grew.
I went back through my TW notes and looked at all my old TW pics and I think I've worked out what's going on. I had one TW that was stretchier than the others and took 75 days, not 70, and could perhaps have gone a bit longer than that, it was absolutely plastered in resin everywhere, but had airy, running buds. I discarded this one, it had the authentic TW taste and smell and potency, but wasn't productive enough. I think this is what you have FF, looking at the pics, I'm pretty sure you got this pheno.
So what you have should smoke like TW cos it is TW, but sadly is a more Thai leaning pheno that produces airy buds and isn't very productive indoors, bet it would rock outdoors somewhere sunny though.

This is the Arcata pheno that I chose to be the mother of my TW beans, as you can see, she has the same stretch and floppiness, but has the chunky buds TW should have, about 75% of the TW were this pheno, the other two phenos were the airy Thai leaning one and the shorter, stockier Afghan one like FF's friend had. As marijuanamat and ABITA both got this Arcata pheno from their test runs I thought that this would be by far the most common pheno, perhaps not and the line has segregated slightly, I am keen to see for myself now, once my TW are a lil bit bigger I'll be putting them into flower and see what I get.

She was trouble but only because she was more of a handful than my skills could handle I think....but you inadvertently gave me an intermediate lesson which forced me to up my game....and I'm a better farmer for it :)
It will almost certainly be down to me and my environment I think. I'm still getting my head around the trich maturation thing - it doesn't always seem a simple case of clear, cloudy, amber - and coupled with the fact that they were too cramped in their space meant that different parts of the plant got very different light exposures. The buzz is very up/sativa, but I'll let you be the judge of that :joint: No idea how the profile compares to typical TW.
The other TW cuts I passed around my circle all came out looking like those, so I did have that pheno at one point. I've smoked one of those and given the choice mine wins hands down, every single time.....in potency, taste and overall quality of buzz.
Thanks again BH....no need to apologise....that's what testers are for as you say. Plus there's little chance I'd have ever had the opportunity to try a proper TW cut. I hope one day I can send you some cool beans that I've cooked up :)
Best

Yeah, the Thai pheno is killer smoke, just a shame it's not that productive indoors, bet it would be killer outdoors in Cali or Spain. I will keep working this TW line till I get it stabilised, I might outcross it cos I hate the floppiness and the stretch is a bit too much.
There's only one way to learn to be a better grower and that's to challenge yourself, I've had more than my fair share of sats that overgrew my space and went a bit wrong over the years, often far wronger than your slightly too big TW!
Carry on persevering mate, and keep up the reports, love following em!
Maybe you'll fancy trying out my next gen of TW beans when they are done, the seedlings are only small at the moment, I'll be happy to pass on a clone of any killer females I find should you want to try some TW genes again.

I totally agree - I reckon the Cali and Spain farmers would love her - if she did this for me in my tiny little medium budbox under 400W, she'd explode in the sun. Also she was totally resistant to UK powdery mildew, and I think bud rot. I had PM in the tent on the old Reserva Privada mystery plant and the TW was never affected by it (and never treated with anything foliar preventatively) - definitely a hardy gal. Also for tops of those sizes the insides had either little or no bud rot. I think I may have seen some small signs, but I've not had it before so difficult to identify.
There's definitely some incredible genetics in that line, no doubt. The sorts of things I'd love to see in a TW 2.0 would be bigger and denser buds (which I think would fix the leaf to bud ratio to make trimming a lot easier) and a shorter, sturdier frame. Do you think crossing her with an indica would mess up the buzz? (i.e. fix the structural stuff but at the cost of the buzz profile)

I'm not sure whether it would be better to further inbreed the line and select for density and bud size or whether an outcross would be better, I am not sure, perhaps a cross to a dense sativa dom like C99 would be good, or perhaps I should find a non-dominant indica male. I have a Petrolia Headstash male and reeferman reckons his pollen will improve naything he touches, so perhaps I should marry up two of Cali's finest and cross him to a TW gal.

FastForward, that's some good growing- real well done on that.
I've wanted some Trainwreck since OG and DrJay's enthusiastic support for the strain.
BH, are you going to be releasing more seeds in the future?

Pretty cool thread. Keep up the killer job and good luck with your project. I'm vegging out some TW cuts now and yes. It's the Arcata cut I've used for a long time. Going into flowering this frieday. I'll post some pictures once they get going. Should pull a nice yield off these girls.
Take care,
