They are sap suckers it's the stunt growth damage stalks and reduce yield they create a waste and leave sugary honey due and create a black sooty mold . I been using ARBER Bio picked it up out of convince at ace hardware it work as a spray you don't want to use as a drench on just rooted clones and seedlings use at quarter strength or less but it's safe to spray if it rains you need to treat them again otherwise it's great and safe for beneficialsWe had SLFs in the yard and garden last year. They really liked the cover of my weed but I couldn't see any damage to the plants. That doesn't mean I didn't run my IPM against them. Neem oil didn't make them move, BT, no effect, they're not chewing insects. Spinosad, they ignored. I cut down the only ailanthus tree on the property and the neighbors have cut theirs down too. Still I have seen some nymphs in the yard. They don't seem to bother nonwoody plants.
