I guess "Wage Slavery" is Dead... It Morphed into Something Different Altogether but then again it isn't like there's A Shit Load of Jobs to be had Either... ;)

Yeah, it sure has jumped around a lot. That's ok though, makes for a lively discussion.

I picked up an application for a job today. The fucking thing was 22 pages long. I threw the fucking thing in the trash.

I remember doing an application online that took almost an hour. I had to basically take a psychological test that was designed to determine if I was going to be a loyal, punctual, employee who didn't steal things. Like over a hundred questions. And thing was....I could see how easy it would be to just lie and easily come out looking like the golden recruit. Waste of my time and their money (Im sure they paid some firm who created the test). Don't know why I even bothered....Hmmm, actually I think I was kinda desperate at the time.

Squiggs, in all due respect I have to say you are totally incorrect.

Tell me, Squiggs..who it was you voted for and/or what you personally voted for that had a large impact and positive effect for this country. One example.

You're absolutely right. No one--but, that's the issue right?

If the people who we're voting for aren't getting things done, then why aren't we nominating different people?

Like I said a few posts back. I'm not one of these folks beating the drum saying "your vote counts" or "rock the vote". I'm saying, let's change the ticket--THEN worry about voting.

Changing the ticket is actually much more difficult and involved than voting. That's why you don't see it happening. It's not because it's impossible, it's because it's hard and you can't get paid time off from work to get it done. It's not something you can do in a morning, or by filling out some form ahead of time.

It takes working together across the country and making something big happen. It takes WORK.

No one wants to do the work, and as a result we keep voting for--as you put it--the same thing over and over and over.

You and I are on the same page here, I think I'm just looking along the issue rather than directly at it.

I'm not saying voting is amazing, but rather that the entire process can work better for us than it is if we take a serious interest in it as a whole. This IS an extremely optimistic viewpoint. I acknowledge that. However, just because it's a long shot that people will actually do it--doesn't mean it's this impossible thing that can't be done. It certainly can be.

Well i suppose this conversation could go on and on but hell i'm just a high school educated weed grower not looking to ruffle and feathers in a unfriendly state and i sure as hell don't wanna be an activist or a rebel so I guess i'll bow out and vote for the lesson of the two douce bags .... the dem candidate ...... unless there in favor of me being aloud to grow weed freely in my home , then they can be any party and they will get my vote......

A out of the box thought - maybe eliminating the zillions of dollar candidates waste of commercial throwing stones at each other they take that money and feed the hungry , cloth the poor, keep the dept under control , take care of disabled vets , hell build a damn playground, eliminate advertising for candidacy and get out and visit the people for free and not in a private jet either........
Thank you for that post

I want to share with you all how (at least in one way, there are others) the recession effected me.

Not to long ago I was a factory worker.

In 2008: We had three shifts Monday- Friday. Factory was usually closed weekends. Pretty much everybody worked about 40 hours per week. Hours worked per week rarely exceeded 50 even during the busiest times. The amount of work everyone was expected to do per day was reasonable, in my opinion.
We had about one accident per year (2002-2008). Most of which weren't very serious. (the injured worker usually didn't miss more than one day of work)

2009-2012:

The recession hit.

1. Demand didn't decrease for the company I worked for. It increased. We got more and more business as time went on (don't ask me how).

2. While the unemployment rate was especially high in this area.

3. And insurance costs continued to increase.

Our hours immediately went up (and at first a lot of us liked this, we didn't shy from a little overtime and liked the extra money). First we had to work some Saturdays. Then we were working overtime every day, plus coming in Saturdays.

All the while the work load also increased, despite working more hours, we were expected to get more done every hour. Management began to put more and more pressure on people. Workers started skipping their breaks sometimes because the amount of work demanded of them was more than they could complete in a day even with the overtime. Some would get caught, be told not to do that, and then the next day told to increase production/their numbers.

People began to ask management to hire more people. Management said they were working on it.

Months went by. Accidents increased. Severity of accidents increased. Hours were increased. But only a few new workers were hired.

Why were so few new workers hired when demand had sky-rocketed and the amount of work with it? Simple: paying overtime to the workers they already had was more profitable than hiring new ones because of insurance costs. On top of that, they knew most guys wouldn't quit despite the treatment because the job market was so horrible. It was take it, or be unemployed and unable to provide for your family (or yourself)...and the company exploited that to the fullest.

Eventually, most people were working 80+ hours a week. That's 12 hours a day EVERY DAY. We got TWO DAYS A MONTH OFF. (Not sit-on-your-ass in an air conditioned office type work. This was labor in excess of 110 F on the hottest days of summer and cold in the winter.) Everyone was exhausted. We had a minimum of one accident every month. Many of those accidents were serious. I personally worked through some injuries (multiple pulled muscles) because every time anyone reported an injury they were sequestered and grilled by at least three members of management. And honestly I was so tired and beaten down.......I just didn't have the will to deal with it.

There was a guy, we called him Sasquatch cause he was so big and hairy, great guy.......he was a single Dad and never got to see his son. Not even sure you could call him a Dad. He said that even on the two days the company gave him off every month he was so tired that he could barely play with his kid. He effectively was no longer a parent to his child, basically only a provider. It was really hard for him. He went into the bathroom sometimes, stay in there for a while, and come out with his eyes red rimmed and blood shot. Nobody said a word to him about it....You could see this guy, this big-powerhouse-worker of a guy, just slowly breaking. It was awful.

All the while the company was making record profits. Despite this our bonus never increased. Few people got raises (not even most of the factory floor management). A lot of our little perks we had before were taken away. (we used to have a BBQ every month we didn't have an accident...that obviously was gone), Christmas party that used to be fully catered at the company's expense turned into a potluck. The management would buy sodas and a bowl of salad and then sit amongst us eating our food that we brought. (by this I mean upper/office management, not factor floor guys)...among other things.

When I first started to work there I couldn't believe my luck. The pay was good, perks were good, benefits were great....good people, even the management seemed friendly and there was an "we are a family" kinda attitude. By the time I left almost all of that was gone. Gone because of one thing......greed.

I swear...the things the upper management did, had they been told they would be doing that three or four years prior they probably wouldn't have believed themselves capable of it. But once that money started rolling in the culture changed. Owner started pressuring the upper management "More production, more....faster....more, cut costs.....cut it more......more, faster, more profit!" And so, step by step...that pressure got put onto us. I could see it happening every day right before my eyes. The transformation of, not only the circumstances, but the people....was....something I'll never forget.
Thank you for this thread and flexibility and allowing it to flow and not bullying the direction

A few q's and one suggestion

1) what can fix the voting system
2) why isn't our people runnining for office
3)* how can we make progress

My suggestion

Monkey wrench the system by voting for.no-one

This might wakeup the honest politician thinking we won't vote fir him
It Wil give us voice with no representation abd last but not least it may flush out the crooked fucks tampering with the vote I doubt they would like a huge measured NoVote

In on my phone so I didn't read all the posts here
Bu I can't believe some of you still think there I a deference b tween dems and reps
They all are royalty to us and we are peasants to them
The title of this thread is wage slaves
They pay workers with money that looses value and take half of it back in taxes
For what?
Their protection?
From who?
The people with real power are not the ones that we vote for
The bankers run this country and most of the so called free world
If you pay 50% taxes you are a slave in my book
And the phoney money they pay you with is worth less every day
aaaahhhhhh finally somone who's brain actaully functions.....aahhhh i can feel the fresh air you brought into this thread ken! :D hope alls well brotha

I was really hoping that more people (read: someone) would pick up some of the other stuff I was puttin' down when I recounted my experience running for a local seat in government. It seems not, though.

It's just not as easy as nominating someone--that someone has to want to do the job. And the job ain't easy. And people are fucking ASSHOLES, they will threaten you, your kids, your wife/husband, everyone around you.

Now, consider the type of person, the type of life they may lead, to be comfortable with that.

Ron Paul was a perfect example of why real change can't happen here in the United (Police) States of America. The media treated RP like a nutjob, made him look like a fool and then when he started to gain real ground, him and his family were threatened. He silently stepped down from the presidential race..after funding almost all his money through PUBLIC donations.

just more proof to who is REALLY pulling the strings and running the Big Show.

RP did light some fires though and he laid down simple solutions to the country's problems. He surely opened my eyes. JFK was the last president who tried to do some of things RP suggested and it didn't take long to see Jacky's brains splattered all over a Limousine decklid. A shot heard round' the world. And a clear message not to fuck with the Big Boys.

Ross Perot met the same fate as Ron Paul.

If we are "stuck" with repubs and dems how is voting going to change anything? It's no matter if 100 people vote or 10 million people vote we still get a repub or a dem and end up with the same result. (war, foreign aid, more taxes, more of the same, etc etc).

The point I am trying to drive home is that the two party system does not exist, they are one in the same. And anyone new(being an R or a D) who steps in, is just like the old fucks. "meet the new boss, same as the old boss...."

People have to realize that the political arena is just one big show, a staged show, a big fucking circus act. There are people in higher places calling the shots. Vote all you want, it won't ever change a thing.

Don't get fold again...... solid post

Took a few of them test and got a job based of the highest score as those test are set up to see if you a bullshit kiss ass , like is taking a pen home from work stealing now most trying to get a job would say yes but thats the kiss ass answer and incorrect one as everyone in a office job brings home a pen .....
