Watering, how media, pot size/shape and environment affect it

What is the challenge from watering below? lmo Roots exploding in res.

Im not closed minded to it and im not sure how you got that from my post. No i do not need to have bottom watered to understand how all these mechanics work and how they will effect various factors. I just understand the mechanics and implications it creates, thus this thread. I have grown many different ways in many different media ane dont feel its for me. If something works for someone they should embrace it and there is no 1 best method to growing… The best is the one that works for you.

To answer your question on the challenges i need more info in the type of bottom watering because they are not all the same.

Is it a flood and drain style?

height of the flood in relation to the pot height?

shallow wicking?

organic (actual organic amendments) or synthetic?

type of containers used?

fresh nutrients or recirculated?

these and more all play a role in what challenges you may face.

Its very simple. Take a 5 gallon bucket and a salad bowl turned upside down in the bucket. That is the res, then you drill holes in the salad bowl then a layer of black ground cloth over it. then add your potting soil. My res is 6 inches high so i drilled a drain hole at 5 inches. You then insert a pvc pipe into the res and water from there.

so you just wick water up?

that will create a salt buildup at the top of the water table… the media above the water table is wasted as it wont get the moisture to support root growth. If you dint understand what i mean pop back and read the part on capillary action

Sure it will work and depending on the type of nutrients you may not see an issue with salts. It’s wasteful media wise imo and you loose the benefit of a wet dry cycle that will help provide higher o2 levels.

again im not saying it won’t or doesnt work… im simoly pointing out the challenges and things that could be better

Do yourself a favor and do some research further into it before looking the other way. It can blow coco and hydro away and using soil. No salt build up and no ph to deal with, I know its hard to believe but seriously check it out. I know you know a lot about growing, but you really need to experience SIP growing.

For the organic soil growers, its a no brainer.

Because it works doesnt mean its better or worse it ONLY means it works. Define better? I think you need to do some research to understand how things work. Because i can clearly see you are missing a lot of information of the variables your talking about.

How about this?
im starting a grow in a couple weeks… you start a grow at the same time and we can compare growth rates for relevance. A basic understanding of the plant’s processes would give you a completely different opinion.

There is no one size fits all in cannabis… nor 1 best meathod or media. Its all subjective.

Sucking up the water from below and watching an explosion in growth. I water less and just add a little Epson now and then. I will take those same photo plants i posted above and start a journal once I transplant into there new SIP buckets. Then they can all witness the magic.

I been around long enough to see when someone is just trying to goat me into a confrontation or argument… im not here to convice you of anything or waste my time trying to change someones opinion thats made up before the discussion even begins.

why you came into a thread that doesn’t make any claims as to the best methods and is simply an explanation and discussion of watering and the mechanics involved to make the claim that only the way you do it is the best is….

well i think just an attempt to gain some sort of recognition or attention from a highly viewed thread. Its to bad we couldn’t have had a better discussion on it but as i said im not here to convince anyone of anything in this thread… just to help provide accurate information on the mechanics of watering and how various things can affect it.

lastly huge yields are pretty much genetics and time…as long as you keep the plants healthy

Sir, I am merely having a conversation also. I only asked that maybe if you have time, try it. I need no recognition here or anywhere. I never sat back and claimed it was the best for everyone. Because growing is not for everyone either. If you like coco, hydroponics, aeroponic great.

It works just as it does in nature.

Outside in nature the rain periodically flushes each part of the soil and leaks some minerals away which is why these are found in the groundwater, esp. Ca, S, Mg and Nitrate. It's not that plants only drink from the bottom, actually what's worse is the amount of oxygen depletes down really fast, and without it, nute assimilation is throttled greatly.
I've seen dissected root balls from the expensive autopot system and about 30% of the upper substrate there are 0 roots in them.

I'm just curious what you mean by explosion in growth, thats a wide interpretation, are you talking 1 to 2 inches a day, once the clone as rooted or maybe more like 4 inches a day of growth, and i'm not talking spindly stretchy growth just on top, I mean sold meaty stem growth along with side branching.

It's growth as you will get in hydroponics/coco.

extremely vauge… growth can be vastly different in the same media nevermind differing media. What kinda of rates per day is what he was asking… if your unsure just simply say I haven’t measured them

Yeah what kind of answer is that, I'm really interested to see what this system can do, so I am curious as to your daily growth rate, or how many weeks your vegging to how big a plant etc. anything like that
