There are staffing companies specifically for the cannabis industry. Im retired and am on a list that sends me over 50 new openings a week from budtender to growmaster(oversees 25K plant numbers greenhouses) and everything in between. Many jobs are for extraction and require a degree(chemistry or bio engineer) or on hands experience of many years. So this is for bay area and Socal, the jobs are there if your motivated, unfortunately for them IIm not motivated and would rather grow for myself.

In BC for the last 20 years or so all the growers I know have used the same trimming crew. They're a group of ladies between 20 and 60 years old and they work crazy fast, but also charge $30/hr cash per worker. They travel all over the province trimming large medical grows. Some crews charge by the wet pound as well. One girl I had a conversation with works one month on, one month off all year and clears almost $100000 a year cash. She spends every other month on a warm beach somewhere...

I agree though, I trim for an hour and never want to look at bud again. I cant stand it.

No kidding. She made as much as the grower lol.

The legal LPs are a different story. The local ones like Broken coast and Tweed cap out at $16 per hour before tax. They take home closer to $11/hr. And they dont get any of the perks the black market trimmers get like time bonuses or free coffee and food, breaks whenever they want, free pot all day etc. Black market growers treat trimmers really well here. LP's, dont. Aphria was all pissed off because they couldn't import Mexican workers to trim lol. All their minimum wage workers quit on them last October during harvest and they lost over a million dollars worth of pot that died on the stem.
They're so focused on the bottom line they dont treat their employees very well.

With the new low pound prices the old school trimmers are not going to make money like that anymore either.

Those fees were paid by growers i knew when it was 4k per pound.

Everyone here still pays it. The grower collective I know is a huge local employer. One Black market grower I know employs about 30 people full time. It's not just about making good money for the grower, it's about everyone in the collective making a good living. Were all friends here and everyone helps each other out. And currently prices are about $1500 CDN wholesale per pound. It was as low as $1100 a few years ago. The only way people wont be paid well is if the govt succeeds in shutting down the black market.

The thing is in Canada all the illegal dispensaries are still open selling pot along side the legal ones. Its estimated over 70% of the pot consumed in Canada still comes from the black market. And that's because the LP's dont even come close with supplying the demand.

Hourly pay for trimming, that's interesting. I've only seen trimmers get paid per lb. trimmed in Humboldt.. My wife used to trim out there. You're right though, most of them work and don't leave the site for a month or two, and then get on a plane and disappear to the Bahamas or something for a month. That's part of the reason for all the missing people signs you see on the walls at the stores out there. It's not that they're in trouble, they just don't want to be found, they're on vacation ;P

There is quite a few trim crews that charge by the wet pound too. This crew my friends use is all hourly though. But like I said they're fast. 4 ladies would take down and trim an average of about 8-10 pounds (Dry weight) in an 8 hr day. They use a machine for anything smaller than a golf ball and hand trim the rest. One woman breaks down the plants, one runs the machine and the other two hand trim with lightning fast scissor hands.

Everyone i know pays by the pound now in the states and i know thats true for my buddies OP up in vancouver BC also. Some people trim fast as hell and others take all day to trim a few ounces so if you pay hourly how is that fair?We just had this conversation the other day and it seems going rates are between 100-150 a P.

Again, I agree that's how most operate. It does give incentive to work faster. These girls have a system and they all work fast and work together as a team though. I'm sure they do work for "by the pound" rates for other people. For the guys I know, they've always been paid hourly to take down and process a room. Slow trimmers I agree by the pound is the way to pay.

Lol so if your slow your going to be lucky to make $100 a day.
Usually if people are paying by the hour the grower has to be on top of those trashy trimmers. They will turn the show into a party if you don’t stay on their ass. It only takes one loud mouth to offset the train.

Good point. The crew we use is super efficient and they all get along though. But yeah the whole "pay per pound" thing came about as a result of slow trimmers. No doubt. It's why we've used the same crew for so many years. They work hard and make great money doing it. The growers here dont pay just anyone off the street $30/hr... Only the experienced and trusted trimming crew gets that rate.

That said, I have had to hire trimmers that just sucked and spent more time yapping than working when the regular crew was busy elsewhere. They didnt last more than a day.

This is exactly why is wrong with the industry black and white today. In no way shape or form should a trimmer ever get paid $30 an hour. That is just silly.
Your inside, very little education, free food, smoke weed, listen to music, brainless work and you pay them $30 an hour??? No wonder trimmers heads have gotten so big in the last couple of years..
Can I ask how much per lb. are you getting to pay a peddling trimmer $30 an hour?
I get 24 per unit and I won’t pay but the very best 20 and once they start to taper off”7-8 hour mark” I send them on their way. Every trimming claims they can hold pace for 12-14 hour days but that is simply untrue. Time tested over and over, if your a trimmer demanding $30 an hour your head is to far up your own ass!
