Hey there as long as it is done in veg and not in flower, fan leaves are energy factories for the nodes they are attached to, think of the bud as your house and the fan leaf is a solar panel that supports that house.

Rock on

I defoliate from veg. stage into late flower. Aggressive defoliating during stretch will significantly reduce stretch. This can be a good or bad thing depending on your strain and situation. Flowers photosynthesize, too.

Experience has shown that removing a fan leaf blocking a developing budsite from light is ALWAYS more beneficial than leaving it on. Buds exposed to direct light are ALWAYS harder, denser, and weigh more than those that are shaded. We can argue about the finer points of situational defoliation until we're blue in the face, but that is it, down to brass tacks.

@RedFroggie your grow looks nice! Did you get your LED fixed? You liking the hempies so far?

Hey thanks for stopping in juniper, yes like the hempy buckets...will be interesting to see the root structure next week when I harvest the NL.
As for the led no not fixed yet may get new light set haven't decided yet on what kind and won't be able to for a couple of weeks anyway.

If you want to go the LED route, I can't say enough good things about Advanced LED. Expensive, yeah, but you get what you pay for, in this case anyway. Website is a bit gimmicky, to be fair.

Yes have heard of Advanced....was also looking at Platinum I believe they use the same made in US components Bridgelux. Under a 100 watt draw during veg sounds real nice to my pocket:)
And where I live heat is not an issue so if I went the hps route I would probably only want a 400. Still have time to research...will be able to purchase in early April.

Ok long overdue update starting with in flower
NL is at day 46 and AK is at day 30 since flip. I have been feeding per the biobizz schedule for week 7 and week 5.
These pics are from Wednesday the 4th.

And this is a quick pic I snapped this morning

I know u can't see the AK very well.
They got a big feed Saturday I may give a little water tonight or in the morning & water is all the NL will get til chop chop on tue or wed.

Now veg the AK is thriving, at least I think so:p Here is an overview.
Wednesday 25th - first stripping

Thursday the 26th

Friday the 27th

Did do another smaller defoil on Friday-

Sunday the 1st

Monday the 2nd different angle

Tuesday the 3rd

And jumping to Saturday the 7th

So the plan is to do another small defoil tonight and put her into flower on Wednesday.

Well I think that's enough pics for one day......Now time for French toast with real Canadian maple syrup;) and bacon of course. Yummy

Mmm Real Canadian Syrup, there is no other substitute, coincidentally I believe it is Syrup season right now. And Bacon well... Now I have to make some ;). and French Toast, that sounds like a meal fit for an authentic Canadian lumber Jack, if your not careful you may find a handful of bearded burly Canadian men at your door asking politely about the irresistible smell wafting from your home. :)

Looking good Red, the waiting is well worth it and looks like your doing a bang up job. Must be nice to know your so close to your own brand ;)

Cheers and keep up the good work I am sure you are inspiring some newbs out there. :)

A tad late on the thread but better late than never, looks to be coming along just fine. Keep it up

If you don't have to worry about heat at all, I'd go for HPS.

So I am probably going to start another thread with the next round which are some Jabba's Stash crosses...
Cheers[/QUOTE]
Hey red!aare the jabbas stash crosses from Two dogg seeds?

Yah @juniper really leaning to hps may get a 600watt ballast and only run 400 for a bit, don't know does that sound silly...

Hiya @happy b the Jabba's Stash crosses are Mr.Nice G13 Hash Plant and Big Buddha Freeze Cheese '89. Got them from Toque Seeds, a small seed breeder. Actually going to start to germinate them tonight been putting it off too long...want to get going on new stuff.

Well I took off three of the smaller branches from the NL leaving a couple small popcorn nugs to develop... if I chop the rest of the plant on St Paddys day it will mark 55 days...& how better to celebrate the green holiday:D

And last defoil for this gal....into flower on Paddys
Image

Hard to see but snapped the top branch almost clean off while tying down, sounded like juicy crisp cucumber...lol. Taped her up and will see how it goes.

Don't use a 600 watt rated magnetic ballast on a 400 watt bulb. Unless you want to blow the bulb, or at the very least buy new bulbs every week.
If heat isn't a concern, a 600 watt bulb/ballast doesn't run an extravagant amount of power or anything, and gives you a full square meter of very intense light.

If your looking for weight HPS I am an HPS guy for now but when I get the extra coin I will be going all LED, I don't need the weight and LED produces a better essential oil profile, more terpenes, s for your own stash I think LED is the better choice for quality smoke. It took years for me to realize this. However if your a commercial medical outfit, then HPS would be better because they do out perform LED when it comes to weight, and the essential oil production is still great but the heat and power are an issue. I see a lot of people buying the MARS LED on a different site. Made in China but 99% of them are made in china.

I am not endorsing this brand as I have never used them but people seem to be happy with them

For what it's worth, my HPS flowers have been better by every available metric (potency, aroma, yield) than anything I've flowered under LED.
I respectfully disagree that LED produces a noticeably superior terpene profiles and stronger odor.

@RedFroggie that is one flat bush my friend. Nice training job.

Understood, and I wasn't a believer entirely either, I have a 924 watt LED Panel, the only difference I ever saw or detected without a lab test was the weight, I was in the same boat as yourself here is a video by a reputable grower using an apache LED granted the technology between manufacturers plays a role, I do believe that the light spectrums involved in essential oil production can be replicated fairly easily.

Not trying to convince you, I am just showing what finally convinced me, this guy is a thorough, genuine grower.

Okay so I don't want to start a debate on led vs hid.....but I would love and want to have the best of both:p

So would it be crazy to have a 400w hid and say the last few weeks of flower add in my led (which I will try and have repaired) for like 4-6 hours a day.

@juniper Just out of curiosity can you use a 400watt bulb in a 600watt dimmable ballast? And I really dig how you title your threads, just read through the vernal follies:) and you get good structure also out of your gals.

And @Canalchemist I swear just watched those vids yesterday...great minds I tell ya, lol. Your right though guy seems to really know what he is doing.

Mini update
The NL was harvested today, day 51. Just personally I like more of a head high most of the time.

The AK in veg seems to have exploded with new growth.... I guess all you have to do is almost take the top clean off:rolleyes:
Image

Also this plant is vegging under three 20 watt cfls, not bad me thinks.

Any who guys n' gals keep it green.

@RedFroggie sure, as long as the ballast itself has a 400 watt setting. Basically, a bulb just needs to be ran at the rated watts. Over or under will shorten bulb and/or ballast life.

Unless the plant is bleaching from too much light, it's kinda hard to over-do. Law of diminishing returns applies but if I were you I'd just run as much light as the plants can take.

@Canalchemist hey nice find on the videos, fairly bulletproof argument there. Well, gotta say when you're right, you're right. The LED I flowered under is about 3-4 years old now, and is from a different company; has technology improved a bit in the last few years?

I would caution you against using a 400 watt bulb in a 600 watt ballast. They are not meant to be used like that, and you also run the risk of the bulb failing, which could be a disaster for you. they are Marketed 400 watt 600 watt and 1000 watt dimmable ballasts because they are designed to be run with 400, 600, and 1000 watt bulb. I had the same questions when I was a newb and everyone cautioned against it.

Almost 2 weeks since I posted pics of what I have been up to....got taken down pretty good by the flu:confused: and that lead to my first fail at germinating seeds, they just didn't get the attention they needed, out of 8 I might still may be able to save 3. Will see over the next day or so.

The NL ended up with a dry weight of 21gm and real nice smoke but smells a little like petrol/cat piss.

The AK was chopped on Saturday

The AK that has been in veg for 10 weeks was flipped on the 14th.

Hopefully I will get a better yield on this one, love the smell from this like sweet rotting grapefruit.

Will have another smaller update later on the NL as that pic is 2 days ago.

Cheers.
