I'm old. Moisture meter=bamboo skewer and a light feel to the container means that it's time to water. It is much better to underwater than to overwater since the fix for underwatering is simply to water them.

You're only old when you stop learning! Since you're a member of this site, I'd say your learning days haven't stopped yet!

A calibrated finger poked into the soil is the least expensive and is more trustworthy that those crappy poke-in meters.

If you are good at it, you can heft, or kick the pot to get an idea of the wetness.
Personally, I use a postal scale.
The first time they just start to wilt, I weigh the container, add an ounce and write that number on the pot as the "water me" point.
Then I water thoroughly and write that number on the pot . That's the upper limit
Now all I need do is weigh the pot, adjust for plant growth, and I know exactly how much water they need. :)
No waste, no mess, no errors.

if you grow in chipped coco........ you don't need a moisture checker.......... you just water them 2 times aday.......... reuse the coco many times.......... once you get it down pat.......... plants always look awesome......... btw....... i hand water in veg and use a 25 gallon reservoir with pump on timer to water flowering plants........ always top off res after ever watering......... change out res water every 2 weeks......... 4 times for most flower cycles.......... plants always look good......... I'm very very thankful to the highly skilled grower who taught me............ it really is easy.

I do use a kitchen scale also and use it almost every day. Mine came with an awesome rolling tray. Actually got mine at a kitchen niche store.

Here's a tip.
When using my scale to weigh freshly watered plants. I slip it into a gallon size zip-lock bag to keep the scale clean and dry.

And the best piece of advice that I give people is the use of dryer sheets on the soil surface to prevent Fungus gnat infestations.
Stops Thrips too.
