I plan to get a 8x8 tent, 4 air cooled hood 600w hps lights, and grow 3 different Indica strains. My question is what would be a good pot size and plant count? My veg tent is only a 3x6 so I don’t have room for many. Thanks on any suggestions!

I’ll be vegging in a 3x6 tent with a 600w mh light. Veg will last 2 months, so how many in there and what pot sizes? Then what pot sizes when I put in the flower tent. I also got two led lights I could use to help veg if needed. Thanks

I can't help you with any of that..I don't grow that way...but keep in mind..when you switch over your plants will get 2-3 times bigger and you'll need room to maintain..good luck, somebody will chime in.

General rule of thumb is a gallon per ounce. You can get more than that but as a baseline it’s a good rule to follow. If you feel the pots are too small then go a little bigger and vice versa.

Another guideline i have found useful is a gallon of media per foot of plant.

Also a gallon per month of growth.

But how many do I know for this setup?
If I got 4 600w, you think 2 plants(6gallon pot) per light would work well?

I like 4 plants under a 600 in a 4x4 area. But with long veg you might fit less. I veg 5-6 weeks from seed and sometimes only can fit 2-3.

I also have an 8x8. 9 plants in 7 gallon pots is Ideal. 3 of each variety. You can take cuttings a week into flower and keep them under T5HO bulbs in pre-veg for basically the whole flower cycle in 1 gallon pots, then transplant into the 7 gallon pots when the flower room is empty. Veg for a couple more weeks in the big pots then flower. Rinse and repeat.
It will give you a crop every 3 months.

Personally I wouldn't use HID for your small veg room. They'll get too big before you can move them into the flower room. 2 months under HID is a long veg imho and ideally you want to veg until the flower room is almost full. You cant do that in 3x6. You'd be better off with a longer pre-veg and then transplant into the 7 gallon pots and turn on the MH light a few days/week before the move into the big room.

My flowering tent would be a 8x8 area and I plan to veg two months.

Only way you will know is to do it. The old school guides put 16 in a square meter (or a 4x4) and when the leaves touch they switched to 12/12. I do 3-4 because of plant count. Every grow can be different. There are too many variables to even hazard an educated guess what will end up working for you.

The guy who first showed me how to grow back in 1997 did 50 plants in 1 gallon pots per 4x4 tray under an aircooled 600. Vegged 2-3 days and flipped. He didnt give AF about numbers lol

For a comparison,

Got to have powerful lights and a high ceiling for this. I have to stick with 600’s (or comparable) and #3 nursery pots. As I have a 6.5’ max height and use light stands.

For veg i stick with t-5 fluorescent for the reasons you state.

Sort of. I have 9' in the center of the room and 8' on one side. But, my plants are 1.5 feet off the ground on the sides, 1 foot off the ground below the bulb and I always finish with a couple feet of space above the lamps. And that's with bare bulbs. The extra area is really to act as a climate dampener.

You can really only get a couple feet of penetration with HID's so I bend the plants out and stake them so they arent super tall. With 4 aircooled 600s you could get closer to the plants than I do with my 2 x 1000's

Hard to see the extra space but there is about 2.5-3 feet above the lamps here. If you cut out one week of veg they would be even shorter. Or you could just bend them down more.

Thanks for the responses. So if I have 4 hoods and 9 plants, wouldn’t the distribution be uneven to have 2 plants on each light then one with 3 plants? Also would two 450w led’s (400 true watts combined) work fine for the veg cycle? Thanks for the help.

Looked like this a couple week previous. This was with one week of Veg under 1200 watts of MH after coming out of pre-veg.

No, imagine you are lighting the room, not the plants. Space the lights evenly so each covers a 4x4 then space the 9 plants evenly underneath. Imagine a tic tac toe grid, put a plant where the X's and O's go, then put a lamp where the lines intersect. I mean, it wont fit exactly like that, but you get the idea.

As for the LED, it will grow plants well for sure, but I still feel the plants could overgrow your veg space under that much light. But it's hard to say without trying it first.. I purposefully try to keep my plants small and manageable until I have the space to let them go.

Only one way to find out...

Right. I only use half that now but i see stress at about 18” from the glass.

Now if we are pushing for yield i got room but for the most canabanoids i like them to stay cool and comfortable.
