First post here,

Nice grow Rooke, I have a similar one in Ontario.

Any tips for budworm? I have them or something making holes in some of my plants.. brutal, and they shit out of the hole it seems, So far ive been spraying BTK once a week, Im not sure if that kills them or if there is anything you can do once they are digging in the stem?

I also have yellow sticky paper wrapped in a circle at the base of my plants not sure if that helped yet, next I will try NEEM oil.

Its been pretty dry lately!,

ROOKE, How often do you water your ladies?, what is your nute cycle? I hope to get mine like your size

p.s Just googled leaf hoppers, I noticed quite a few of those on the tops of my girls also, whats the deal with these guys?
cheers

I've only seen this one in the greenhouse and one this morning on an outdoor plant. Added to the grasshoppers and cabbage moth larva I see a fight brewing. 💣

They there, ya I’m in a low spot tucked in the brush . The bud worm is my enemy! I have leaf hoppers as well not an ideal spot. I have to conceal my gals from plain sight unfortunately. Maybe next year I’ll be moving out in the open I have to build a fence before that happens but my gals are happy and doing well other than early flowers kinda scares me a bit.

Hope you don't see any budworms this year! Ah early flowers just means an earlier harvest, which sometimes isn't bad. Especially being in Ontario you might end up seeing bud rot if your area is humid with lots of morning dew in october. Getting to harvest earlier means your bud not seeing as much chance to mold!

For me I did a weekly application of neem oil and while I always have bugs on my plants the damage done by them has thankfully been pretty minimal. Now that I am being buds on a couple plants I will stop the neem oil treatments for them and am not sure for any other preventative measure for pests during flowering.

If you were referring to my plants rather than Rooke's (mine were the only pics before your posting so I am thinking this) then I water as per needed. I know this is kind of vague but like every other gardener will tell you, you really have to understand your plant and the medium youre growing in to know when to water. These plants are planted in amended soil in about 3'x3'x3' holes in clay ground. Since there is clay all around, i know the water doesn't drain well and that my plants would drink most of the water given to them rather than it draining out into the surrounding earth. When I first planted them outside in these spots, I began with watering weekly at 3-6 gallons for a watering. Then as the plants grew and their roots filled the whole hole, then I had began giving them more.

For example its been quite hot recently and at this point these plants are drinking a fuck ton; I am watering twice a week where each plant gets about 12 gallons each time and usually get one good rain in as well. So going through about 220-250 gallons a week now. To check if I need to water I pull back some mulch and dig into the earth. Some people just stick a finger in which makes sense when using only a pot. Since Im in the clay soil I know there could still be a puddle of water still sitting at the bottom of the nice soil (in the spring when the holes were open and it would rain it, each hole would fill up with water and take weeks for the water to drain out into the clay). So I use a hand shovel to dig about 6 inches or so in to check if the soil is still moist. Seeing if the dirt clumps into a ball or just breaks apart when a handful is squeezed also helps.

For my nutrients I run half of the recommended dose of each nutrient every other watering.

and if you actually meant Rooke's plants then my bad!

Great thread and killer job. Looks freaking great. Looking forward to updates!

Thank you so much! I am so excited for september / october to come rolling around!

Didnt mean to hijack thread, Great grow Moosefarts! following!

No problem man, always encourage a nice conversation with everyone. Plus nice to hear from fellow ontario growers.

Tis the season

I've only seen this one in the greenhouse and one this morning on an outdoor plant. Added to the grasshoppers and cabbage moth larva I see a fight brewing. 💣

Hopefully you can get rid of everything before flowering! Sometimes i do feel like some bugs look so friendly, and that is one of them. Im sure they do more harm than good when it comes to weed plants though.

Stupid little update: a cousin of mine was taking a look at my plants while I was inspecting them and he came across a branch I had super cropped as it was pinched over. Ends up lifting this branch up and down, moving it like its own elbow during a bicep curl, while asking me "hey man why is your branch like this???". As Im like "dont fucking do that!" the branch snaps off clean at the bend. I ended up trying to graft the branch right back on because it was a nice one, but dont think the graft is going to take since its been too sunny and I couldn't be bothered to go ahead and set up a shade tent over the little area.

Shitty cause it was a nice branch, but thankfully theres a million more colas on that plant (kabul express). Goes to show, don't let people who don't know much about growing go ahead and start fondling your plants.

Outdoors there's always a number of plant eating insects. If the cycle of life is in balance there isn't any real worries but if you're spraying insecticides you're going to kill the predators as well which can cause plant eaters a free hand as many are small with a quick life cycle.

I've found keeping things in balance keeps the predators in check. In the past week I've seen the above and many recently hatched grasshoppers yet my plants haven't been negatively affected. A few munches and holes here and there but no worse for wear.

I try to keep insecticides to a minimum and use natural means to control outbreaks when warranted. Neem oil is the strongest insecticide I use and I'm very carefully with it.

Cabbage moth larva are an issue every year. They borrow into buds then eat and shit making the flower unusable but it's usually just a few. I've noticed none yet but I've been allowing spiders to hang out on the plants and while I'll have to clean off their webs (I assume this will be a pain) it's better than having shitty buds, literally.

Side note, all gophers, ground squirrels, slugs and snails should be nuked and do not belong in my garden. 😉

Thanks homie! As a side note... I still get a little laugh out of my own user name 🤣 definitely have a little lol when I read it out loud.

😂 hahahahaha that is just great. I dont have any issues with them so far but I agree just for your sake!
I also left the spiders on their own around my plants as well. I think it definitely helps. Also predator beetles also get their free passage on my leaves.

Sure is weird looking I’ve never seen it before not even in my compost pile. I’d get it picked up and bagged for sure
Kinda looks like toad eggs. Why they would leave eggs around a plant, I have no idea.

Well that’s it then, they’re gone. Whatever it was anyways. I doubt it was toad eggs since they’re usually black and in water right?

Not always, some species will lay eggs in moist soil as well as some newt species. Not worth the chance though. If you have toads and frogs they'll help keep the insect population in check but without knowing what those eggs are it's best to get rid of 'em.

I just did a quick search and while there are American species who lay their eggs on land none look like the above. I'd love to know what they were.

Yeah, that could be. I've got issues with both and they've destroyed hundreds of seedlings the past few years but I've never seen an egg mass of either one. Bastards!
This is a first for me as well! I’m used to seeing spider webs in the grass clipping mulch under my plants. I notice them after some rain when you see the water droplets on the web. When I first saw the eggs above from afar I just guessed it was another one of these webs since it just finished raining. Got closer and saw they were actually little white spheres And thought that was weird.

I still feel as though it has a long time to go, but what do you professionals think? Buds haven’t really fattened up yet. I’m really just trying to gauge whether I should begin to flush or if I can feed nutrients again. Yay or nay??

Finally put up their cages. There’s also the fucker who stepped on my plant lol. This pic is right before a little bit of pruning (topping and defoliating)

View attachment 875353

White critical express: topped for 16 colas and now bending and training
View attachment 875352

View attachment 875354

Kabul express: topped for 32 colas now I’ll simply bend and train
View attachment 875356

View attachment 875357

Most of the bottoms of my plants that have 16+ colas look like this. Isn’t it beautiful? Lots of airflow and all the branches are quite strong

View attachment 875364

AK kush express: this one was a slower grower but is loving its new home now. 8 main colas here but did some topping after this pic to slow down the upper growth
View attachment 875358

OGKZ: wanted to see it become the monster it’s supposed to be. Haven’t topped it yet and it’s about waist height
View attachment 875359

View attachment 875360

Peyote cookies:
Topped for 16 colas but also topped and defoliate a bit of undergrowth after the pic. Also starting to bend through its cage.

View attachment 875361
Not even the largest of leaves but they’re getting HUGE!

View attachment 875363

Baikal express:
This one was started about 5 weeks after the others. Smaller and it went through a lot of heat stress on its first days outside. Stunted the growth for a while but now she’s thriving

View attachment 875362

White widow 47:
Topped for 18 nodes but then also went through some heat stress. Now she’s also thriving. Haven’t really pruned much since the heat stress as I’ve been waiting for more foliage to grow. Taking out the dead/ dying ones over time though

View attachment 875365

Pics are from yesterday. I’ll probably end up cloning that plant that’s dying as well as some side branches of other plants tonight. Also going to water that dying plant in the post above with water + hydrogen Peroxide. Hopefully the extra oxygen helps the roots.
You do know that sandals and white socks are a more dependable birth control than condoms? 🤣
