I mean I'm all about cost cutting at every corner so that's where my opinion lies. Do you plan to reuse the soil? Maybe run them both on a run side by side and decide. Should be a huge issue if you don't have a crazy plant count. Reusing it would cut that cost to almost nothing most likely. Maybe start composting. I feel if going this route you do it 100% to get the best bang for your buck.

I would never reuse soil inside. And no composting. I do plan to do it outside eventually if I can ever clear my side lot and build a greenhouse.

But you are right about cost. And my perpetual production does keep a tab rolling.

Thanks for the perspective.

It's amazing you can get them to recover so quickly by knowing the symptoms.

Symptoms dont matter. If you fertilize and see leaf stress or yellow tips or burning in potting soil you simply leach the pots with fresh water until the runoff looks clearish and the ec is within reason for the age and size of the plant and re fertilize to runoff for even more root clearing with a complete balanced ratio nute at a lower strength. Or not if the soil has plenty of nutrients.

My mistake with those was i flushed (leached) but did not re feed. So they stalled for over a week and ate their own leaves after a few days.

With experience comes faster recovery.

I'm sure it isnt going to matter in the end what you chose you will do just fine in whatever you throw them in. Just like this guy ^

Would you mind elaborating on that? I've been amending and reusing post-harvest dirt and am interested in your perspective.

I dont run a “living soil” grow. I want the freshest best draining mix. I will fertilize in flower and in my opinion the soil has been completely depleted by the end of the grow in a 3 gallon nursery pot. The whole thing is roots. Very little soil left if the run was good.

If there was anything left worth recycling in the soil i feel i had not maxed out the results in the pot.

Got it, that makes sense. I'm now curious to see how much of the 5g buckets I can get the roots to take over. Soil weight at planting and at harvest might be a stat worth recording down the line for me...

I never thought to weigh it. Are roots lighter or heavier than soil?

I tried 5 gallon pots too. But under flourescents i didnt fill the pot with more roots than the 3 in 6 weeks and it didnt help with yield or even plant size. I would likely have to veg for 2-3 more weeks.

My roots have been lighter than the soil, but that could also be a function of just getting off the ground and not growing the ladies out to their full potential. My thinking in weighing the dirt is that it could make it easier to understand what and how much the plant actually absorbs from the soil, and possibly in what quantities, to make amending more precise.

5g buckets are just what I started with. I've been planning on switching to 3-5g fabric pots for a while, among other things, but that's down the road.

But how will you know whats missing? You still will have to watch and learn the plants to know what is needed or not in the soil.

I started in 5’s too. And overwatered the hell out of my autos i started in them. I switched to 3’s for height reasons. I started my perpetual with a 3’x2’ propogator tent amd a 4x4 for flower. I could grow a 1 foot tall plant in the 10” high 3 gallon and then flower.

Later i bought this old house and set up the converted bedroom but i guess from practice my yield started going up. And my plants kept getting bigger. Too big for even my new space. So I stick with the 3’s.

If I had more watts and a higher ceiling i would veg a couple more weeks and flower in 5’s for sure. Its a right tool for the job decision.

Oh yeah, I think the soil weight could just be another tool in analyzing how best to take care of them- I'm a fan of collecting data. How high are the ceilings you're working with?

I feel so fortunate to be able to start out without having to use tents. Eventually I'd like to split the room they're in again so I can have dedicated sativa veg and flower spaces as well as a dedicated germination room.

Only 6.5’ its an old converted lake cabin. And i have a stand made of 2x4’s to hang the big air cooled reflectors and fans and filter. That takes more height away. So i use 600’s and just grow shorter bushes.

Nice comeback on that one plant, it still looked nice enough I’d be proud lol, thanks for sharing

Thanks. I have been taking shortcuts and not thinking too clearly during my injury. Im starting to get my groove back.

Heres some pics of her. She is still growing bud. Potent looking and smelling little buds. But man did i mess her up.

Hide yer kids, hide yer wife cause little pots are taking over. Using a proper amount of soil is so 2009 😆

What’s crackin, mimed? You getting better er what?! Don’t die on me old man. If you need a kidney or lung or whatever lemme know. I’ll carve er out myself and toss it into a cooler and mail er to ya. Just say the word
