Breeding talk for everyone to understand

With home breeding, I think the perfect is the enemy of the good. Very few growers are going to be able to run out 1000 plants at a time, But it's not that hard to cross a couple plants and do a pheno hunt. What ends up happening (hopefully) is that genetics are naturally so widespread that corporations have trouble patenting theirs. Very similar to heirloom tomato and pepper seeds.

100 is totally feasible. Start them under 12/12, say 85 pop. Then kill the seedlings that are less vigorous, then there are only 60 or so. Then let them start showing sex and kill the first ones to show unless trying to make an early flowering strain, down to 45. Kill any that carry herm traits, down to 35. 17 males and females, essentially. Expose them to drought, wind, cold, and heat and kill the ones that have the least resistance, down to 20, 10 and 10. Pick the best 3-4 of each. Veg the ones that match the ideal selection to your desired size, flip, let them stretch, and pollenate with the best males. Do that for a year or three and then it's IBL time.

At least to the best of my understanding, if anyone has thoughts on that process please feel free.

Nothing in there is super intricate. It's just the initial fear of failure that keeps people from trying things. Each seed contains a universe, each germination is a big bang. Each plant is a world that the breeder gets to choose, create, shape to their liking, and discard EVERYTHING else. We create through destruction. And then we create so that we can kill again. 😈🤣

I wouldn’t be able to run the 35 remaining without converting my living room into grow space. Wonder what the fiancée would say 🤔🤣

😄 I think what's going to end up happening with cannabis is a divide like in the beer world. There will be the people that just want a Miller lite, and the people that will spend 40 bucks on a 4 pack of cherry coconut vanilla bourbon stout.

Yeah, Skunk 1 is definitely a classic breeding strain, it and Chemdog are in everything haha.

I'm doing it with a couple of the IBL's that I'm making, now going into the F3 generation. The original pollenation was (Uzbekistan x (Panama Red x Nepal Highland) & [(Panama Red x Nepal Highland) x Uxbekistan], with multiple males selected from each strain to pollenate the selected females with. They'll be going into the first IBL generation with the seeds that are maturing now. I can't say empirically how diversity was affected, but there are a spectrum of ladies in this generation, leaning towards Nepalma and Uzi.

Currently doing the same thing with Nepalma/(Moonshine x Amnesia) and Herjuana/Black Afghani.
I may not understand it all, but agree this stuff is absolutely fascinating

How much does she like and prioritize weed?

If she's the fiancee then she's already said yes once!!

You’re right. She would have left by now if she was ever gonna lol

Do you think it would it be possible to break up a big project like this amongst different growers? What kind of issues might you run into with doing 1000 plants split between 10 - 100 people?

This would be very cool, a forum wide phenohunt.

Only issue is everyone's environment and experience is wildy varied.

I wonder if you could set minimum parameters to level it out enough to make it work. Requirements to keep a certain standard.

I’m not even close to most of the people in this thread including you @Dirtbag ive followed your thread and learned a ton.
But that being said I would definitely be into a project like this.

Are we still talking f2s? I'm sure someone here would donate the seeds.

I think if we do this we also need someone with some experience and knowledge to head it up.
Yep. No sense wasting everyone's time. But I think this could be a cool way to select a deadly strain that only we have in clone only form. And if some of us are willing, breed it further to create a stable IBL.

How many volunteers would we need?
That sounds like I solid plan to me.
sounds awesome , but might take a full year or even two
And the participants should discuss ( before we even begin )what traits we look for as a group , such as ease of growth , yield , aroma , high , bag appeal etc etc

Maybe make comparisons to a product we are already familiar with , GSC , sour , haze , kush etc etc
