This is awesome stuff. I actually have a dupont painters suit here somewhere lol.. Funny, i already have almost everything i need and didnt even know it. There is probably even a still air box here somewhere if i go looking 🤣

What i think im going to do, is rather than bulking all the jars of spawn into a single mono tub, is ill do a few shoebox totes with a different spawn grain in each to see the differences. Maybe a slightly larger tote with oats since i have a lot of it. A pound of rye in one shoebox, and a pound of millet in the other. And bulk them all to coir with a dash of vermiculite.

You can purchase replacement gasket material at an automotive or hardware store, they make different thickness and materials also. I think some of the older North American units are very cheap to acquire, and well constructed, certainly the way to go on a budget.

Chances are, some of those units you could modify, if you wanted, because there made from good solid materials in most cases. It's nice to have some of the bigger units for this kind of endeavor, I suspect.

One of these old pressure cookers was used for the Boston Marathon Bombing, actually. These things can be dangerous, if the valves are not properly functioning, keep that in mind people.

I was a bomb guy in the military (which sparked my lifelong interest in Chemistry, and Science) and I've worked around lot's of dangerous things over the years, and this is one of them. Especially while making Whiskey or ETOH, can be inherently dangerous. Any super heated vapors are not a joke.
I was working day shift at Brigham & Women’s Hospital the day of the bombing. Yup, definitely some damage to be done when filled metal small projectiles.

Im trying not to get too freaked out by the bomb in my kitchen here guys... lol, come on!

Lol, seriously though im not too worried about my PC. The big one especially has several safety features built in and is UL certified. And its not like the boston marathon bomber set down a hotplate and boiled the PC until it blew up. There was some actual explosives involved there. PC was just the pressure vessel. Like a big pipe bomb.

But, what if.............the safety valve...........fails?

Shoeboxes are my jam unless I get into a situation where I have so many colonized jars I start to think they're gonna overthrow the regime....

Yeah.. those were modified and had explosives and shrapnel in them.

I've been running the same damn one for 12 years. I've fallen asleep a couple times with it on. I've operated it while drunk, stoned, tripping or all of the above.
Obviously inadvisable, but they were manufactured with the LCD in mind.

The other thing too is, they really only fail if the vent gets plugged. And just boiling water with jars, there isnt anything to plug the vent in there. Its not like pressure cooking food really. Only concern might be tinfoil but that will be held in place with rubber bands.

Yup. Worse thing I've ever heard of was scalding from a gasket failing.
Still awful. But not the kitchen pipe bombs of urban legend.

Keep them shits oiled.
That, and just kinda stay away from it unless you need to mess with the heat. Wear oven mitts and heavy long sleeve clothing near it. If you wanna get real safety conscious a face shield even. Some simple precautionary measures should protect you from the worst they would do.

@1diesel1 this was a good read. Reassured me a lot and makes me think ill actually use the bigger mirro canner and not my oldie. But i might still tap the lid on the new one and put the pressure guage on it. I might not though, i honestly dont think its a big deal.

Me neither.
It's nice as a visual monitor to help you adjust. But you can do that with other monitors like the rocking of the weight or the frequency of steam being released. That's what I usually end up doing anyway, is setting it on the heat, walking away, and waiting until I hear the "PFFFSSSTTT PFFSSSTT", then go in and turn it down until it stops doing that so much.

Yeah i noticed last night that the weight did a great job at regulating the pressure on the small PC. I tested it at 5, 10 and 15 psi and it was bang on each time. I figure if i just run it as its designed it should work just fine.

Personally i dont think they would sell these things if they blew up easily. Not that they cant, just that several things need to go wrong, and theyre all things that are easily mitigated by the operator.

Bingo.
I'll attach as many product manuals as I can dig up just to drill into everyone's head to read the fucking thing.
That's one of the main functions of a gauge in my mind... all of them say: 'DO NOT OPERATE BEFORE READING INSTRUCTIONS.'

You will be absolutely fine because you’re diligent and aren’t trying to create a bomb. They were.

I wouldn't eat it.
Looks cubey enough, but not enough to be certain.
There might be some better identifiers than I... I'm not the best with that, especially once dried and without a spore print, pics of gills, habitat, etc.
