I'm learning the hard way that seed banks are mainly a rip off. Why is the "no pop" ratio so high with expensive "store bought" seeds while my own seeds that I breed pop almost 100%???

Purchased from MSNL: 10 pack of NYC Deisel - Not one popped, 10 pack of Northern Lights - only 2 popped, one male one female, 10 pack of Super Skunk - Not one popped. Most of the rest of the order did pop plus the free seeds.

Just purchased 3 pack of Hawaiian Snow from Green House Seed Co (through North Atlantic Seed Co), all three no pop.

Not only is this a huge waste of money but the time it takes to find out over and over they're duds really pisses me off.

I did not have this problem in the old days when I ordered from Nirvana. No duds ever.

Take a look at this seed pack from Green House Seed Co. There was no label on the pack so how did they know what these were? Supposedly Hawaiin Snow but doesn't matter what they were because not one popped. Also says since 1985. Maybe selling seeds from 1985 is too old.

And another thing. Why are all store bought seeds little tiny wimpy mini seeds? I have never ever once since I started growing again, received what I would consider to be a healthy seed. Big with tiger stripes sometimes, like my breeds. Never ever from a seed co. They are all tiny underdeveloped looking seeds, every one, every seed company. There's no excuse for this and the fact that they send them out the door is criminal.

I'm going to conclude that the seed industry is no longer viable, and all seed companies are rip offs.

I buy them at the hydro store. If they don't pop they give me new seeds. I think the days of mail order seeds are almost done.

I paid $8 a seed for 15 seeds, 3 strains. One strain, all 5 popped. Another, 2 of 5 popped . On the third, zero. So I went 7 for 15.

I also had some bag seeds saved up. Unknown strains. I planted 4. All 4 popped. I feel your pain.

Was there a cover for the Green House seeds? That’s not a breeders pack. Just part of one.

Pushrod Monkey you are right, I was wrong, I dove in the garbage and found the cover so to be fair they are good a labeling. My bad. The seeds still didn't pop so it doesn't really matter.

I hear you! I bought Dutch Passion Critical Orange Punch. Got 2 out of 10 to pop. 1 was just wimpy and died when I pulled the damned thing. Only one grew.

I maintain an IBL Durban. Some people here have them. Just received an email from a guy with seeds at least 2 years old. 10 of 10 germinated. Just like fresh. I’m sure he stored them well.

Point being I believe it’s a combination of old seed that has not been stored well. I wrote Dutch Passion. Never heard squat and I was not asking for replacement. So much for DP.

that's why i'll never spend money on katsu's gear ever again. $200 for a six pack of fems with absolutely shit germination rates. no thanks. rather buy high quality reg seed stock from the likes of Dragons Flame Genetics (who actually stands behind his work) instead of some "breeder" that hides behind vendors and doesn't immediately remedy the problem when a paying customer reaches out with a concern. katsu isn't the only one. have had issues with mass medical too. both of which are a shame because they had genetics i was chomping at the bit to run but can't run genetics that don't grow.

A lot of big seedbanks are just distributers/wholesalers and sub contract, a contractor could be making seeds for many bigger seedbanks at the same time. Sometimes seed size and viability is a reflection of calyx size of the mother, maturity and health of the plant when harvested, and in outdoor pollination, seeds tend to be smaller than indoor bred because smaller seeds favour survival in the wild. One time I bought 100 sweet tooth #3 seeds from Spice Of Life and they were the smallest I had ever seen but viable. Seed viability is definately on the company marketing them but like any business you have fewer honest ones than proud ones.

I have ok luck if they come from the Netherlands, but any from north America seem to be bunk. I just got 12 Texada Time Warp from BCBudDepot and not one popped. After much wasted time they agreed to send 12 more... the dude was like "I'll make sure they send good new ones." I was like "shouldn't all the seeds you sell be good new ones.?" He laughed nervously... And I agree, they always look weak and scrawny, not like big, dark fat seeds you get from your own weed. Sad what the weed industry is doing to quality and standards.

Ive popped some seeds from barney's, sensi, thseeds, Vision, the purple urkle seed company (inoright. it was my first time seed buying. but hey they worked..)

the only no poppers so far were northern lights from phoenix seeds. But that was a noob choice to begin with. Not even remotely the right place to get northern lights. kinda my own fault.

I plant directly in the dirt. Sharp end down core end up. Room temperature water or very slightly warm water.

I only have my anecdotal experiences, but I’ve had no issues with germ rates from.

Mephisto
Freshcoast
Exotic
Square1

All bought in the US. Only seeds that had germ issues for me were some ILGM skywalker, but prolly did me a favor.

I have had many issues with seeds bought online but rarely a no pop issue. Ordered a photo pack last year and an auto was in it!
Lots of pheno variations and weak plants.

Now I basically only use Tony Green's Tortured Beans. The most stable and homogeneous genetics I have ever seen! Always top notch resin production and a super low intersex trait possibility. Now I don't have these issues anymore.

I have hade good luck with Nirvana seeds. Seed supreme...not so much. Like a 30% germ rate.

Going to be trying Ethos's 'Banana daddy' next.

I think some of the reason seed banks have immature seeds at times is because they are not concerned if the buds are totally ripe, they probably don't wait as long in flower as someone who wants to smoke the weed.

I have ordered the last two years from sensible seeds. I had some purple urkle seeds from pyramid seeds that went 0 for 5 last year. I mentioned it when I ordered this year and they sent 5 of something else to replace them as a courtesy. I also had an auto strain called King in the North auto by sensible seeds that went 0 for 2 this time, If I get too many more that don't grow I might reach out to them. Other than those issues I am guessing somewhere in the 75% range of success with the rest of the strains I have purchased. I can also say that yes some seeds from certain strains/breeders look a little immature but a good portion are tiger striped, and almost all have been at least brownish.

Herbie's seeds, I have ordered with in the past had much worse germination rates. Maybe the way they store them?
