...then what's the point? You're reducing/limiting the LED when you alter the spectrum. There's a reason why we grow with full spectrum LEDs. That's not scientific at all.

HPS is cheaper up front cost and provides the benefit of radiant heat
LED wins in every other metric
Oh no one is "limiting" LEDs... I am talking about the arrangement of specific diodes on a LED board. Which diodes are used, and in what quantity affects the spectrum. Not sure what you mean by "limiting". Every LED grow light has a different specific spectrum, even among the full spectrum ones. You can buy blank quantum LED boards, then buy whatever diodes you want, to arrange your ideal spectrum.

I just have a hard time seeing how HPS is cheaper up front, but to each his own.

Im thinking my tsl 250w and my 1000w HPS would work great together. I can even turn the hps down to 600w setting. Thing is, my biggest tent is a 4x4x6.5 and im sure 850w is to much. Like i know 1000w of hps in that tent is way to much. The 750w setting i am running now seems to be creating less issues. Wondering if I should turn it down to 600w and add the tsl? I guess you do about 50/50 led HPS so id be having more red than you at the 600w. .i dunno what to do lol
my hps / led mix depends on the weather. Summer I run 100% led. Winter might be 50-50 or even 75% hps depending on temps. I think 600w hps + 250 led is too much for a 4 x 4. 2x 150w hps with the 250w led in the middle might work. That would be 550w total

Are your winter buds the same quality and weight?

One of the major advantages of going LED is so that you can grow full spectrum? The comparison revolved around watt:watt here not spectrum:spectrum but I do see where you are trying to go.

Good luck finding a 630w LED for $200cdn 🤷‍♂️

Is this cheap enough?
If we are doing watt per watt, which isn't how this thread started, as I am the one that started it, this still beats it. No, destroys it.

How about 150 watts for $25?
I think you can get an hps bulb for this much.

IMO if i were to do a scientific comparison, I would make a custom quantum LED board that matches the HPS spectrum as close as possible, it's zone coverage, PAR output, etc... and then a better comparison could be made.
I been reading this in a study some time ago where the scientists used "amber"-coloured monochromatic diodes that resembles very much the HPS SPD in the 600-750nm region, where HPS has its highest light output. The LED couldn't compete. To both ends, be it either blue or IR, the HPS still throws put photons and these will have effect.

For me in the winter, I’d rather use an hps with an air cooled hood to easily trap the heat and vent it to through my house. With an led, this isn’t as easy to do.

Just caught up on the thread.

I had always been sceptical on LEDs compared to HPS but it’s actually the farm here that has converted me. Can’t knock the numbers….

Picking up LEDs today.

The LED unit pulls 630W from the wall and has been reviewed to throw out the equivalent or more of a double ended 1000W HPS. Also it has been said that you’ll never really run it at 100% as it’s just too much.
It will veg a 7X7 and flower a 5x5.

My two reasons for going LED, hot summers and minimise my heat signature. Always have choppers going over my place.

Winter time MH or HPS is perfect where I live, keeps the environment good, MH raises my tents temp by 8C, that’ll be the struggle with LED, but that’s a year away now. On the other hand summer time adding 8C or more will put me in air conditioning mode. LED will help me out big time here!!
May do HPS winter, or just during flower to keep humidity down and heat up.

Happy growing!!

I believe I've finally gotten LEDs that out perform my HPS lights. Smoke test jn a week. If it tastes better and the buds are thicker LED has finally won for me.

LEDs can perform as well or better than HPS. But just about every large operation you see is going to have 1000 watt double ended HPS. Why? It is really two or three different things.
#1 the person running the grows (AKA) master grower is scared to death of LEDS, because of the additional nutrient requirements of LEDs. Remember if the plants look like shit the master grower looks like shit. So LEDS suck is going to be his comment
#2. If the boss forces the change to LEDS the master grower and his crew will be working their asses off defoliating the plants because you have to be more diligent with this under LEDS.
#3. The Master Grower is going to bitch like an old lady about the work until the boss fires him or goes back to HPS
#4. HPS penetrates further into the canopy and allows for less work by the grow team
#5. Let’s say the boss goes ahead and changes to LEDS, plants start getting sick. Master Grower blames it on a bad batch of nutrients. Nutrient sales rep gets called in. He would also pop pop LEDS.

Having ran both HPS and LEDS. LEDS are harder to manage. HPS you can just run basic nutrients and that is that.

Just watched a video about this. LED's sound like high octane stuff. Sounds like LED growers are on a whole 'nother level!✌️

It is not so much they are on another level. In my neck of the woods things are divided. The guy that got me into growing was HPS. We had a falling out and did not speak for a good couple years. He was moving and was asking me about my set up. I showed him and he literally called all his friends and said you have to change to LEDS. I need to be clear, all LEDS will grow plants. Some just out perform others. That is absolutely all I am saying about different lights.
The simple part is something like this. People get a recipe for growing and they will usually stick to it. With pot being legal in so many areas now you have a different group of people also growing.
The guy that showed me some of the very basics of growing had a recipe. I know that because his stuff and his friends stuff smelled exactly the same.

unless your flowering then you may need a heater
I run my veg tent 24/0 and that particular led puts out a lot of heat, so I’ll exhaust from my veg tent into my flower tent to keep the temps up over winter (at least that’s my plan lol)

I do that too,i have the thermostat in the flowering room to turn the fan on.
