lmao not really. But my name is accurate, when it comes to rDWC, I'm a complete noob. I never even got around to building an rDWC. Was thinking about it, designed a bunch of 2 and 4 plant systems, did a bunch of research, joined the farm, finished up my existing grows, then everything changed. I now have a prescription and a license to grow 25 plants. Building a 25 plant rDWC was out of the question, so I opted for a 20 plant SOG with rockwool. Still working out the kinks in my irrigation. An unfortunate mistake, 2 of them lol, led to my pump being offline 2 days in a row and the medium getting too dry. I think it spiked the EC in my medium along with my res was getting a little high on the EC, so I've started watering down my mix a little.

It's going well, better than expected, but I'm a little disappointed that I fried my leaf tips, as usual. Here's last night's bud photo, currently on day 3 of week 5 F.

There's others that look better or worse, but the bud development all looks good still. And, there's one thing I'm very very happy about. They smell like grape candy :)

wait what? Water only from seed? Is that some sort of crazy living soil that doesn't need any feeding?
I followed Coot's recipe I learned from Jermey Silva. 1/3 coco/peat, 1/3 aeration (perlite/pumice/lava rock) 1/3 worm castings/compost. The added nutrients were 1/2 cup seed meal (I used barley, corn, and dry beans) per gallon of soil, 1/2 cup crabmeal per gallon of soil, 2 cups minerals (I used Azomite) per gallon of soil, and 1/4 cup kelp meal per gallon of soil.

After it was mixed, I sprinkled 1/4 ground mustard seed on the top to discourage any fungus gnats. Other than that, it has gotten water only for almost 3 months. I also managed to get worms somehow. I'm assuming they came in the castings.

Omg that is awesome and thanks for sharing

What caused your burnt tips

What caused your burnt tips
I believe it was a combination of underwatering and EC too high. I generally don't check my EC very often as I'm drain to waste and just keep refilling the res with fresh water and nutrients. But after my pump issues, forgot to plug it back in one day and accidentally changed the timing mode the next, I checked my res and ppm was at over 1300 which seemed a bit high. So I've watered my mix down to about 1000-1100ppm and gave the blocks a good flush.

I'm also running a new nutrient line called Strive and might not be giving myself enough runoff. I've been trying to keep the runoff to a minimum to promote generative growth, but it's possible it's too little and I'm getting salt buildup in the blocks. It doesn't look like it though, the blocks are covered so the tops don't completely dry out and I don't have any real salt buildup that I can see. This also my first time using timed irrigation on this many plants, so I've still got to work out the timings between veg and flower etc, as well as get the water distribution to each plant more consistent.

My next run I will be starting the clones just before Christmas so my plan is to water a little heavier all the way till maybe week 2 or 3 of flower before cutting it back to almost no runoff. I'm hoping to get 2 more runs in before the beginning of June when I shut it all down for summer. Hopefully by then I'll have all the kinks worked out and next fall I can finally complete a flawless run or 2. Fingers crossed 🤞

Why should you? what you're doing looks great, and it's probably a few weeks faster this way than doing it with one plant because of the longer veg time needed.

+1 this, if it wasn't strictly for this contest I don't think I will do a 1-plant-scrog again unless I had a smaller space like 2x2 or 3x3.

EDIT: maybe my mind will change in a few weeks 🙃

What are you trying to accomplish by allowing the coco to dry out?

I really should try a one plant scrog and just do a long veg period to fill my screen.

I like your setup dude, clean and organized! And a 1 plant per scrog is cool if you are limited in plant count and want to get max yield per plant, also its fun lol. Otherwise then for sure, more plants fill a scrog faster than one plant. Also, the longer you veg a plant...the more opportunities for pests/diseases to take hold. Also, the woodier the stems get the less efficient the plant gets at nutrient uptake I heard. So really I think multiple plants per scrog is ideal, but 1 plant per scrog is cool and gives you a really nice even canopy. Happy growing!

I have looked into living soil and its pretty neat, though to get the most from it you still need to add ammendments to the soil, kind of negating the whole "just water till harvest" idea. Build a Soil has some cool products for sure and Jeremy is a cool dude.

Soo tempted to just flip these in a week...what was the prize again? Lmao

Not coco, rockwool. Ever heard of crop steering? Essentially there's 2 types of growth, vegetative and generative(flowering). You can promote vegetative growth with lower ec and higher water content in your medium, and generative growth with a higher ec and lower water content in the medium. With rockwool in veg you want dry back to like 60 or 70% saturation iirc, but in flower you can go as low as 20 or 30% water content to promote generative growth. It requires timed watering a little bit at a time starting an hour or so after lights on, then every 2 or 3 hours after that until a couple hours before lights off. The goal is to have a good amount of dry back over night, to whatever your target moisture level is.

I wish I wasn't the only 2x2 in it, and had a vet to go up against like you, just to see how close I come lol

This is my last flower most likely in the 2x2. Just ordered almost everything I need to turn that into a near 100 site aeroponic cloning station. Really psyched for that.
