That might have had the Ester Alcohols in it. That's what Im looking for. Cuz then you can take those genetics and cross it with other strains that have the recessive Ester genes. Then if you pop enough beans you may be able to find some Ester magic. Im telling you the Ester Alcohols were a critical element to the skunk magic back in the day and the reason why people say that "skunk is gone" now is because these alcohols were bred out and replaced with fruit smells instead. It's because the K9 dogs could smell the Ester Alcohols gassing off the flowers from a mile away. That classic strong skunk smell was getting farmers busted so it got bred out to keep the growers out of jail. Kevin Jodrey knows this and that is why his skunk hunt is focusing on reviving the Ester genes from vintage skunk varieties. Jodrey admits in his video that some old school Train Wreck cuts had Ester Alcohols too. The Ester phenotypes were present in a few different flagship strains back in the 70s, 80s, 90s but then came the early 2000s and it all was totally gone by then. It started dying in the 90s and was totally bred out by early 2000s. I was lucky enough to catch the tail end of it.

Imho, going from outdoor to in, had something to do with it. I think earth magic is where the skunk will come from. I think bottle feeding will never create what we are looking for. I believe when someone finally gets it, it will come from outdoor crops. Mycilliam magic

Yes the type of light does have something to do with this also. Outdoor is always best however I know for a fact that the Ester Alcohols can be reproduced with the old school Metal Halide bulbs also. You need a light source that puts out heat and UV. My old school HID/Metal Halide indoor rig made insane stinky flowers back in the day. Currently I have a top of the line LED rig now and although I get good efficiency and still get top shelf beautiful rock hard buds the terpene profiles are not quite as stinky as what my old inefficient “glow bulbs” used to put out back in the day. I’ve added UV reptile bulbs to my LED board to try to compensate now.

They've all been in a trunk for the last 25+ years.......in our NYC apartment. We got a house way up north, and as we're getting the apartment renovated, it's time to clear it out and bring stuff up to the house......it'll be fun to go through them all....

And yes, weed that's stored too wet can develop moldy, ammonia smells. That's not something we want either.....

What might be the desireable "ammonia" smell would be "astringent"? Something that kind of hits the nose.......a little confronting, acrid, but again, in a "good" way. Not something that knocks my head back like ammonia and urine.

I think when strains are developed that are a real hit, like Trainwreck, Sour Diesel........they're a hit because they're unique. Different from any other strain, and noticeably different. Smells that are unmistakably THAT strain. If someone develops a strain that's LIKE Trainwreck, but a little diffetent, that's not special, that's not going to get it's own name. Calling it "Traincrash" isn't going to give it the stamp of it's own unique strain. Most people are just going to say "yeah it reminds me of Trainwreck, but......".

There are shared aromatic molecules between the strain, and ammonia for instance. This is why it smells like ammonia because the plant is producing terpenes that also exist in ammonia and lend to that smell profile. Sometimes these terpenes are so prominent and strong that you can’t smell much else underneath, such as RKS skunk as it’s been called. The skunk terpenes were so strong that people would think they were smelling a skunk and not weed. The only time memories of RKS are triggered for me is when I’m driving and pass an area where a skunk was hit. It was a fantastic strain.

Just like anything in life it’s all about the unique qualities that make it special. If all weed smelled like cat piss it wouldn’t be as special, the one that tasted like lemons would be talked about. But unfortunately the fuels, skunks, piss strains are much rarer now than before, and what IS available always pales in comparison and usually doesn’t even resemble the reference.

From what I was just recently reading the Diesal Gas smelling Molecule are actually something different than Terpenes! Ayone know anything about this. I will find the article if you have yet to encounter this idea!

I've passed dead skunks and smiled, because it triggers the menory of Skunk weed.......but I've never mistaken stinky weed for anything but weed. Maybe someone who doesn't know, isn't experienced would, but no matter how stinky a variety is, it's still smells within the context of weed.

Yes there may be other things at play besides just terpenes. There's also combinations of terpenes together.......maybe things that come from the plant, not just the resin.

Olefactory hues...... ;)


Our senses of smell and taste, and both together, are very complex. Can you imagine what dogs must go through when they smell stinky weed? It must make their brains exolode....

My mom works with animals at a teaching hospital. She said animals get nose blind very quickly. If they didn't, they would be overwhelmed

IF you are familoiar with People's olifactory systmes they work in cycles to protect the Mind. Like back to the CaveMan days when our Noses would need to turn off to the stench of our dirty Cave brothers during the winter...

New Research Confirms How Cannabis Gets Its Skunky Smell


Each cannabis strain has its own aroma, some being more distinctive than others. All, however, share a “skunky” scent that has become widely associated with cannabis by users and non-users alike. But where exactly does this smell come from—and are skunkier-smelling strains better?
A study published in November 2021 in the peer-reviewed journal ACS Omega holds many of the answers. While many have speculated that the skunk smell could be attributed to the terpenes, or aromatic compounds, of cannabis, the research team behind the study actually discovered a whole new class of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) to thank for the cannabis-skunk phenomenon.
