Has anyone ever used this moisture meter? What number dryness should I let the meter get to before watering again?

Also not looking for any smart ass answers like "stick your finger in the soil" or "lift up the bag." I am doing that but I want to get an idea of the weight of the bag when it is time to water it. I've had problems with over watering in the past and this is my first soil grow. The soil at the bottom is still wet/moist and the bags are heavy but the top 2+ inches of soil is dry

I have that meter. It's useless. Mine measures 0 poking the pot in 20 locations, but my plant still has water for 3-4 more days. Do yourself a favor and avoid issues down the line. Just pick the pot up if it feels empty it's time to water, if it's heavy at all wait another day and pick it up again.

If you use that meter to try to know when to water, you will over water your plant and have issues.

Interesting. Sounds like yours is broken. If I stick the meter into the bottom of the pot it reads very wet and if I stick it 4-5 inches down it reads between 4-7 this meter has over 60k reviews on Amazon with a high rating. I'm just looking for an answer if this meter did work, at what number would you water?

I had problems this grow with root rot because the bottom of the pot was not dry when the top 3 inches were dry and the bottom never dries out

I would put the meter half way and water when it is mid way in the red. Remember that plant roots don’t all need to be fully wet all the time. If it is drying up a little half way up roots will grow down and out to follow the available moisture. So you actually promote roots to grow down and out to allow some soil to “dry out” mid way up. They are just happy to have full coverage when you do water but between watering, they follow the moisture for new growth of roots.

Thank you! Sounds like I should wait to water until tomorrow. The last time I watered was 4 days ago

Yeah I read those reviews on Amazon also. And no it's not broken, I actually have two of them. 100% it reads 0 and I still have days left to water. When the pot is wet it reads and changes lower I get into the pot, but when it reads 0 below the red 1 mark I lift the pot and it's still heavy ish. Then I wait 3-4 days longer and the pot is finally light. Use it if you want we all have to learn from our own actions. In a few weeks/months when you have issues and come in here asking what's wrong. Everyone going to say you are over watering. Then, you will be like naw that's not it my meter said it was dry, then maybe two 3 grows later you will be like I guess this meter doesn't work. I'm just trying to save you time and issues. Take the advice leave it, that's up to you.

I would suggest that you water at #3 on the scale. Water very well but slowly add water so that the potting medium has a chance to soak up the water you are adding, it does not run down the side of the pot and out the bottom.

Remember bud, you are on a web sight filled with pot lifters and finger stickers. Most of us will have one of those meters in our box of stuff from when we started growing.

So believe me. If we say stick a finger in the pot it's not meant to be an off handed answer. Out of 20,000 guys in the forum you are likely 1 out of 100 that is using a meter like this. If that's what it takes for you to stop over watering then that's OK with the rest of us k.

Welcome to the forum, Happy growing!

Yes I'm just using it as a guide to help me with the finger sticking and pot lifting because doing those things without the moisture meter were not working for me. I'm not using it as my bible or anything and hope to grow out of it. This is my first soil grow and I'm hoping to be one of those finger stickers and pot lifters someday.

What did have you grown in before?

I looked up Hempy Bucket. I have never seen them before so I will go back and read up on it later.
Pretty much just a bucket with a hole on the side with a small reservoir at the bottom and once the roots make it there the growth explodes. People use basically just coco or perlite sometimes with some vermiculite mixed in or all 3 mixed together. It's kind of hydro

Indoors I grow micro and Cannabonsai in 1/3 peat 1/3 Vermiculite 1/3 Perlite. Very light and fluffy mix that works well for me.

Any way it's time I called it a night.

amazon haha absolute junk, amazon is the biggest rip off scam going..
and yes throw that piece of crap in the garbage and lift the pots, if you don’t know than wait a day try again still unsure wait again.. you basically cannot really do damage to a plant by letting it go dry, worst case the plant would wilt and be weak looking than you water and your good.. but you water a day or two to early a couple times and your plant will be affected all the way till harvest if it makes it..
