That's a fantastic setup/system you've made there JJ....a friend of a friend uses a similar system and pulls HUGE yields off of it, only his was loads more money :) What I love about yours is the simplicity - no need for a float valve as the IWS system...

Thanks for sharing....kickass work fella...

Thanks FF! This is about as simple and basic as hydro can get. Draw back is the wasted 18" of floor space that you gain useing other systems with multiple pumps and float switches. The cost per inch of vertical space can be staggering for some hydro systems just depends on your grow room.

In my opinion you loose taste and gain yield from hydro set-ups. I can almost always taste if the buds I am smoking are grown in hydro, they are always a bit harsher and almost never as tasty as they look and smell. But there are people out there who prefer hydro, and now there are lots of good organic methods for hydro, so the results can be a bit better. But the furthest I would ever get from soil is coco.

Personally I think it is in the flush, not disagreeing that there is a difference. How the hell do you flsuh a plant grown in dirt? I flush with pure R/O drain to waste for the last week and my run off is below 20ppm, just curious how you get that clean of flush water from dirt?

jj

Update time: really only two things different in the past few days.
First, G13 & 14 are drinking like pigs. 25 gallons of water in 6 days, cool thing is it that the PH and PPM were constant the whole drop so the nutrient level is dead on track at 725 ppm, these are extremely light feeders.
Secondly, these cold ass nights are stopping my stretch big time. Room drops down to 65F during ligths off and up to 73 or 75F lights on. Heating the grow room during lights off is not an option, long story but the entire 3 story house is used to vent the grow room so fans run 24/7.

If the dirt is organic and the nutrients used were organic, and everything is in an organic balance, then the plants will never draw up more than it is capable of using. So by the end of its life cycle it has no excess salts anyway. Also by the end of the growing period the soil should be depleted of most all available nutrients, and the plants are surviving on the nutrients they are fed. This is why you still see the leaves loose the vibrant green during flush in soil. I also use pure R/O water for my flush but I also flush 2-3 weeks. The smoke is quite nice and very clean and smooth. I have always preferred the flavor of dirt grown buds, the dirt is where these plants were meant to grow.

Can't say that I agree with ya but damn, gotta respect a man with a passion for gardening.

Honestly, I think everyone has different tastes. Look at food as an example, some people like sushi, others hate it. I know people who actually do not like the taste of chocolate. So to each their own. I certainly have respect for your passion for hydro growing. You have one serious set-up that produces some beautiful buds, that I am sure taste fantastic. So keep it up, I really do love the show you put on for the Farm.

The Flush Begins

G13 started it's flush yesterday and will go down on the 19th of the month. Took SmokingGuns advice and will add a few days to the cycle. Finally sat dwon with a pencil and figured out that cycle time. With a perpetual set-up what ever time you add has to be multiplied by the # of harvest per cycle, in this case 2. I'll add 2 days this cycle and 3 next to get the age of the girls up to 65 at harvest time.

Stretch is winding down on G14, the cold nights I am having has had an effect of these girls heigth. Not a really bad thing but it did stunt them a bit.

The clones of G15 are finally taking off, 64 out of 64 so far. Topped them all at day 14 post clone, think they are at 17 days here in this picture. The girls from the shadow grow are doing well, have them under a 400 which is the first time I have flowered with this wattage. It's a lesson in light penetration for sure, I'm used to bud formation down the plant but these just aren't filling out below the canopy.

And here are the newest genes to enter the garden, thanks to a fellow Farmer.

Right on JJ....the canopies are really filling in nicely now aren't they? Good job there!

How many of those new ones are ya runnin?

I love germin beans and squezing buds in the same day. IMO taste is in the nutes.

Great Growin jj

Those G13 girls are looking fat and beautiful. Very nice job. I am looking forward to see what your harvest comes out to be.

Het Pro, got 4 out of 5 beans to pop, can't wait to see what your PP can do here. And for those canopies, damnedest thing happened over the past couple of days, the main cola's had hit the string and just stopped then all of the sudden the side branches took freaking off. I swear they stretched 2.5 to 3.5" in just 2 days. This is the 14th generation of this gene and I have never seen them act like this.

Aint that the truth! and since you are the only guy on here I know of that uses the same nutes as I do I got a questio for ya. I have a pepper plant in DWC and the flowers would shrivel up just as they bloomed, finally figured out if I remove ALL of the nitrogen they could flower out. Took out the BC Boost and the pepper is a happy camper. Ever heard of such a thing?

Thanks man, much appreciated. Figuring I can pull a 1/2 O per plant on this grow, 39 plants to be cut in 2 days.

The plants that I put under the 400 are doing well, they are my little research plants it seems as I tinker with them about every night. They have never been LST'd but they have been topped 3 times and cropped multiple times in their short life. As they have begun to fill out their bud sites it became very clear that the light penetration is about 6" into the canopy and there was minimal bud sites forming below that level but there was a large amount of foliage. Out comes the snippers and the girls got cleaned up. Ended up trimming off 196 grams of wet trim. They look a bit thin now but give them a week and there will be a really nice smooth canopy in there I hope.

Great update as usual bro! I'm sorry ya only got 4 out of the 5 to pop. You know where to get more if ya end up likin em though ;)

sry jj I have no idea about anything other then da canna biz
hehe
I would guess your little pep' had some lockout due to the nute load...

Call Jason at Technaflora (800-586-1211) he loves to talk to anybody about anything to do with technaflora's nutes.
Also they got a forum www.technaflora.com/phpBB2/

JJ, the trim job looks great. That definitely is the best way to optimize your light and space. So I think your work here will pay off, and you will have some nice larger buds at the top of the plant, and they will probably make up for what you tool off the bottom.

Thanks guys for stopping by. G13 is now in the dryer, here's a couple of shots:

Nice pile of bud, brother JJ! Have you shown pics of your dryer design on the farm yet? I'd like to build one sometime when I get the more pressing things done around here, and would like to get the ventilation/air exchange part right the first time around. Care to share a secret or two?
