That, and its normally the female mom that is selected for its desirable traits initially, and thats what you're ultimately trying to reproduce in stable seed form.Probably because it's known that male cannabis DNA is heavily influenced by it's mothers side anyway
But if you have pollen from a selfed female and cross to a diff strain those offspring are still F1 and are regular seeds now...or all feminized?Thats a real thing. Breeder Steve is working in another country on that exact sort of plant. I believe it is a triploid that they have mapped some of the genetic markers for (they have $$$$$ to spend on R & D) and they have found it doesn't produce pistils, which makes it sterile and any outdoors growers dream, whether it be Cannabis or Hemp.
I've always had that conspiracy side of me that said Fems are a way to prevent people from making their own. I also think all the Selfing going on now is because of people not understanding breeding or having the time for it. They want money money money and selfing a plant is about as basic as you can get. I see why someone would do this, no shame there but I hardly consider it breeding.
@Dirtbag, so back when say blue dream was born, they only back crossed stuff to the female to lock in the genetics?
No they will be femBut if you have pollen from a selfed female and cross to a diff strain those offspring are still F1 and are regular seeds now.
Got it now yes...so much to wrap my head around its so cool...thanks everyone!!! ❤No they will be fem
That would make an R1 feminized seed. But if you have pollen from a selfed female and cross to a diff strain those offspring are still F1 and are regular seeds now...or all feminized?
He is dismissing the research done on genetic markers..... but its super expensive so only a few big companies have access to that technology. He doesn't like to cook, he wants the microwave meal. If you self a female, you are far more likely to get a more homozygous crop from the offspring than if you would have crossed it to the male (as I understand it, have never done the selfing myself). Less work, shorter distance to goal. Thats fine, it could be evolution of the process. What he can do in a year for creating a homozygous line, often takes traditional breeders 6 or more years. But you also miss out on "all of the possibilities" and that rare gem that pops up.. So it's really hard to know who the smartest person in the room is.Skip to 15:40
Probably the best place to get started is with Mendel, who through the famous Pea experiment laid out genetic inheritance -https://www.khanacademy.org/science/high-school-biology/hs-classical-genetics/hs-introduction-to-heredity/a/mendel-and-his-peasOk @Chad.Westport or @Dirtbag can either of you point me to some good reference material?
I hate not understanding a subject and this is one I have avoided for a long time.
Thanks brother.... who want to start the breeding Q&A thread? I will if noone else wants to and tag everyone here.Lets start a new thread - Sorry aqua man :)

Just started it :)Thanks brother.... who want to start the breeding Q&A thread? I will if noone else wants to and tag everyone here.
Tha k you sir.Just started it :)
Nope first time bro... heard good things though.Have you used Green Point before? :-) I just got five phenomenal seeds that I'm getting ready to drop in a couple of days
DOOOOOO IT!!Thanks brother.... who want to start the breeding Q&A thread? I will if noone else wants to and tag everyone here.
I tagged ya in it.DOOOOOO IT!!
Ok @Chad.Westport or @Dirtbag can either of you point me to some good reference material?

Awesome is there freebie or do I need to order?Principles of crop improvement is a good one that was recommended to me by Jeff at DF. Its an excellent read.
I've been reading Clark's book too. And my kids grade 10 intro to genetics class material also... lol
