I’ll be coming through your neck of the woods on Tuesday, taking my buddies grandson deer hunting near Old Station, I also got the kid a bear tag, just in case. I know it’s C zone (which is pretty aptly named, since you don’t C many deer). I’ll get to check on the grow, probably won’t be ready, and because I got the kid with me I’ll have to have a neighbor pull it if it’s ready, but I think I’m gonna have to wait until November when I shut the place down for the winter.

Lol! I’ve killed two bears in my life and they didn’t have anything to do with hunting! Had to do with pot growing in the bushes back in the day! Would be nice if you could tag one of those too! walked out the back porch the other day and ran into this! The dog took one look at it and went back into the house! Lol! And I sure as hell wasn’t gonna tangle with it! It was acting weird for a buck and they are pretty unpredictable in the rut! Had three points on one side!

That’s a decent buck. Where I’m at it’s all about the migration. The local deer get wary as soon as the first shot goes off. Last year I missed the migration by about 10 days. When it starts getting cold up at elevation the deer start moving down from 7-8000 thousand feet towards Shingletown, Burney/Cassel or Fall River. Sometimes it looks like cattle, but with this warm weather I’m not holding out a lot of hope. The bears are just the opposite, when it starts getting cold they go up in elevation looking for a place to den up. Some years we see more bear than deer.

At my age, one of my rules is, I’ll take a buck on flat ground or uphill, if it’s more than about 50 yards downhill (these are steep hills) or farther than my rope/winch will reach, it’s pretty safe! That’s even more true for bears, cause “they be heavy”!

The deer around here are dropping dead from blue tongue disease, I think. So far four on different clients properties. 3 bucks and a doe. Second time it’s happened. It ain’t rural here, in people’s backyards. They smell good after a couple of days.

I had never heard of it either! Out here they are just trying to keep chronic wasting disease from getting a foot hold in the state!

It's always here so the deer are largely asymptomatic, just like out your way. I'll hear of sheep every now and then. Up north where it's not endemic they'll get it hard some years until late fall and winter. No see ums are the culprit.

Meat is still good.

I don't have CWD here it's mostly up northern couties in NW.

Don't have RHVD here either, which worries me more that anything because of my rabbits. You have it there in Cali.
