I always remove the male and collect pollen in another room. I turn the fans except the exhaust off for two days while and after pollinating with a tiny paint brush on selected buds. I never had any problem. Maybe one or to strays, but the crop is pretty much seedless except where I pollinate.

I've had horrible luck with that. Collecting pollen is not uncommon but for some reason, I have never made it work. So I go the sure fire method.

A benefit of collecting pollen and brushing it on the pistils though, is that you can only pollinate a few branches instead of the whole plant. Just be sure to bag the branch as you do it to avoid cross contamination.

And the participants should discuss ( before we even begin )what traits we look for as a group , such as ease of growth , yield , aroma , high , bag appeal etc etc

Agreed. And I think due diligence and planning, and open collaboration absolutely needs happen. I'm down to get in on this for sure.

As for traits, I think we need to rate each plant on categories like you listed and evaluate the scores from there. I don't think we can predetermine what smells flavors or effects we are looking for really because who knows what will sprout..., we're looking for greatness.

But yeah, for initial selection we should agree on what we want in a plant and a suitable strain. But i think the choices of strain to use at this volume will be limited to what we can get..

I dont even bag it. I just put a bread tie on the branch so you know where to find them. Funny how real life differs so much from all the copy cat plagiarism on the internet growing sites. Read one site and its word for word the same as 100 other sites. They don't even try to disguise it. That's what make this place cool. free thought.

Definitely need a goal / frame work for people to work off of and a uniform way of reporting results using specific standards. Doesn't have to be overly technical, as long as people are using the same parameters for judgement.

Having different environments and level of growers can be beneficial too. Lets say someone has a broken timer for 5 days.... does the plant herm? Im sure there will be many plants that get stressed for a variety of reasons along the way, but that is excellent research. You don't want to pass on herm traits.

I would say it needs many more volunteers, lots of places have 4-6 plant limits and I don't think many people would want to max out their room. But 2 plants a person, up to 4 would be great. I know it requires more, but some people need to keep the reliable meds going too. I like the idea and could definitely donate as well.

Make one requirement that every plant be subjected to 15 min per day (other lights off) of strobe light. Plants that herm are disqualified.

Its true and kind of funny, you can find the same typo in the same place on like 20 websites all that have an article about the topic. Copy / Paste, Copy / Paste.

I'll have to get some of your technique from you on collecting it. I've down shaking it into a jar, I've done letting it fall on parchment paper in a shoe box, I collected it in a bag and then tied that bag later to a branch and shook. I've painted it on from the jar (which may have remained too moist) and even let the pollen I the shoebox dry before collecting it in a jar and then brushed it on. I see the pollen on the pistils, just have never got a single damn bean that way. So any help would be appreciated ;)

Agreed on the planning and we should have shot ready to go by April to ensure it goes smooth. I'll drop in on this too

Lol I deleted my comment trying to edit it.

Yeah I think summer is the time, I can rip way more outdoors than I can Indoors, and by the time I've sexed the prospects I can bring a ton of cuts indoors to flower

I have been working since this flu shit started, in Cali as an essential worker so I have had to deal with meetings and such. It would be super easy to just set up a zoom meeting and let all the members collective review plants and such to help aid in finding the best pheno's and such. Secondly, by people donating from different areas there would be a better chance of diversity if seeds came from different regions.

I think there should be a minimum plant count honestly. You need to be able to compare the results against something, if you only get 2 female plants, you have no idea how much better or worse the rest of the crop is. For a project like this where we want to whittle it down in as few generational steps as possible it would be best to limit it to growers who can grow a minimum number of plants. Im not sure what that number should be, but I think more than 4 reg seeds.. And all participants in the hunt get a cut of the winning pheno.

That said, Once its in stable seed form it should be made available to anyone at the farm somehow.

I guess this is where things get awkward...

I can probably max out at about 10 in my current setup. I can start out at 24 though and whittle down if that will work

10 is the minimum I had in mind honestly. 10-20 per person would work well. I can probably do closer to 50, maybe more... I need to renew soon and might put some more plants on the license.

Dirtbag you are correct, how would one know that they had a special or different pheno if they only popped like 4 seeds. Last time I ran seeds it was space monkeys by Bodhi and just structure wise I got 3 different pheno types. Right now I am running Brandy Moonshine BX1 (backcross HA HA) and I am seeing 2 pheno types and that is just with 6 seeds each time. Probably need to pop at least 10 seeds to have any chance of recognizing a special plant IMO.

I shake mine from the plant onto deli container lids that are otherwise kept in the freezer. When there's enough, they go into those little plastic seed containers, get sealed and labeled, and go back into the freezer.

A small paintbrush dips in there perfectly and can dab pollen wherever you need it. Gently cover the pistils with it, hit it from different angles, It'll get the job done.

Yes a committee will work but there also has to be a chairman, if you get that many people working on the same thing opinions will be a challenge and they need to be managed fairly so no one gets their feeling hurt and such.

100%. Roberts rules?

Seriously though there needs to be a boss. And it should probably be a well respected moderator who is interested in this subject imho. Someone with an awesome growroom and a reputation for being fair and forthcoming, and able to handle me pestering them constantly..

Anyone?

I was hoping you would volunteer @Dirtbag, but if you do not want to do it. I nominate @Aqua Man. Do we have a second?
