So I'm a 58 year old man with chronic back pain. No serious injury or anything just soreness related to stiff muscles and getting older. Up to this point I have only been growing high THC strains because my primary motive was getting high and hoping the medical benefits would follow but they don't seem to be helping my back. Looking through the various CBD seed catalogs I feel like a noob again, don't really know what I'm looking for. So my question is what would be best to try first, a high CBD low THC strain or something closer to 1;1. I already know the answer will probably be personal preference and what works for you so just looking for opinions to find a place to start. Love this hobby, always new roads to explore.

I'm currently growing my first CBD strain. It's Royal Medic from Royal Queen Seeds. I just flipped it to flower lighting, so I can't tell you how effective it is. I can tell you that it grows fast and large. I moved it to a separate tent because it quickly started crowding out the two Zkittles that I had growing with it. I'll try to remember to post a picture of it when the light is on, about half an hour from now.

I chose this strain for no specific reason other than having to start somewhere. It just looked good at a good price. RQS has good filters on their website, and that helps. They're having a good sale now, so I recommend checking it out.

We also just harvested two Royal Creamatic autos from RQS and we love the high and the pain relief/body high. It's wonderful. It's rated at medium CBD with 15% THC. It's wonderfully mood enhancing. We'll be growing it again soon because it won't last long.

As promised, here's a picture of the Royal Medic. It's just recovering from a day-long power outage from a windstorm. I waited a day after that to change the light to 12/12, so today is its first day under flowering light. It's under a 240W light running at 180 watts in a 2x3 tent. The tent has an AC Infinity Controller 69 Pro. I mixed Gaia Green nutrients and Epsom salt, gypsum, azomite, perlite and biochar with the soil. I also gave it some kelp fertilizer, but stopped mid vegetation to slow its growth because it has been an aggressively-growing plant. It also gets potassium silicate. It seems to need a lot of Epsom salt. It's in a 5-gallon fabric pot.

That’s a 2x2 tent, right?

I’d suggest buying some CBD only strains first, and just trying it out to see what works for you.

If you’re state-side, CBD can be ordered through the mail (almost) anywhere in the US. Find a place that does good testing for terpenes, and grab some CBD flower and try it out by itself. You can also try some CBG. If you’re finding it has positive effects, you can try mixing the CBD flower with your high THC grow at different ratios. Say 1:10 or 1:2 or 1:1. That will help steer you in the direction of what to look for.

From there, you can look into what strains you can grow that match what you’ve found is helpful (in the form of terpene level, and ratio of CBD:CBG:THC).

It’ll be alot cheaper, and faster, than growing something to find out it has no positive impacts on you.

Fair warning though, alot of the CBD flower that I’ve tried online, in fact most of it, is absolute garbage. Like, no idea what’s in it type level, and left me with migraines. So finding a good, reputable source is really important.

Thanks, nice looking plant. I was looking at some strains from RQS. The "Medical Mass" looks interesting. A lot of people have been bashing RQS on here lately but I've had pretty good luck with their seeds aside from 1 batch a couple of years ago that had terrible germination rates.

I like harliquin and charlettes web not grown them myself yet but i buy from my dispensary and blend it with my indica strains i grow. Works for me and also i'm retired from physical labor job so that helps alot.

Thanks, that's a good idea that could save a lot of time and money. Although like you said I would be leary of buying flower online.

If you go down that route, it isn't too hard to find a supplier that someone else recommends. But I've found it is really hard to find a recommended supplier, that provides test results and strain information.

Like wnc-cbc.com has CBD that is pretty good, and provides CBD % and terpene info, but no information on strain. Other providers will tell you strain, but no idea what's in it.

So your options are either: 1) spend $30 on CBD/CBG of unknown strain to see if cut with your stuff it will help and if it does you can grow a strain with similar % levels, 2) spend $30 on a known strain but unknown CBD/CBD levels to see if it helps, and if it does grow the same strain in the hopes it helps, or 3) spend a lot more than $30 (and time) to grow a known strain and hope it helps.

Really!? I haven't seen it and haven't had any problems. I once complained about how the seeds were packaged. They listened and made them better by using blister packs.
Some troll came on here earlier in the week trashing them claiming their seeds were bad because they always die on him at 6 weeks. When them beans cost $10+ a pop I'd think a noob would want to play with some bag seeds first so they don't waste their money.

Assuming the store bought CBD and “known strain” seed are anything close to similar. I’d venture to guess that one or both isn't as advertised and the change of you actually matching up dispensary weed and seeds is dubious.

Growing CBD from seeds is also a real crap shoot since only about 1/4 of the plants are going to be CBD producers. If you can pick up clones you’ll have a much better change of having a CBD producing plant.

I'd fully agree.

I'd assume the tested % CBD level would be pretty close. But I would assume the expressed qualities of the "known strain" purchased flower and seed could vary widely.

Even the strain "Harlequin". I've seen it sold as Type III (negligible THC and 10% CBD), Type II (1:1 or 1:2 THC:CBD), and Type I (15% THC with 1% CBD). If you bought "Harlequin" flower without any accompanying test results, and it worked for you (or didn't) good luck attempting to replicate the results with home grown.

That dude was a clown!! RQS is reputable
Glad I missed it. It's hard to blame the seeds for plants that die at 6 weeks. I'm only growing my first CBD plant right now, so I can't recommend it yet, if ever. We'll see how it goes. It has grown well through vegetation, but I had space problems while I was waiting to harvest from one of my tents. So, as of now, I'm only in the learning phase in growing CBD plants.

CBD does nothing for my pain at all, I require thc dominant flower for that. Cbd has literally never done anything for any of my health conditions, I find it useless. But good luck with your pain, hope you find your varietal ✌️
