What's the controversy? I assume the usual diminishing returns, but do they not have the lifespan to recover/benefit from pruning? Is their structure maybe too columnar to have productive nodes?
Ruderalis is such a foreign concept to me, which, being in a northern climate, seems a bit treasonous.

I was sort of half kidding actually, but I do read things like you you shouldn't slow them down or stress them at all. I think if done young topping should be fine and maybe set the plant back just a day or two. Idk I'm growing my first auto now

I have 1 going thats about a week younger than Amy's and I'm not touching it. So time will tell...

So, theoretically, by topping, you could further utilize their stout structure to your advantage in spaces with even greater height constraints?
If weight and (maybe) quality are negligibly effected, seems like just another tool in the belt to me.
I guess the debate is then when to top. My figuring would be that you just don't want to disrupt hormone cycles at the wrong time.

With respect to when to chop. Hormones? I've never paid attention to them. I'd just do the standard grow to 6, chop to the third. Lay them out straight and flat. Top to the third on both ends. Chop node 2 off on both ends. And then let veg continue.

Can you slow down a bit after you lay them out after the third node? I am with you for sure till there. But idk what else you are chopping and when. I think you mean once it branches after the first chop then you chop again as a mainline?

Well things stay consistently between and 70 and 78 F in the plant cabana but it was definitely cold last night outside.

Yeah, I'm stuck away from the plants for a week at a time and when I left it was way different weather. My room is temperamental with the heater so I left if off out of fear of frying everything. I started this setup in the summer so I'm just starting to use the heat for the first time. Poor babies all chilly and high rh..sigh

If we’re still talking about autos, after my experience I don’t believe I’ll ever top an auto again and instead LST. Let alone mainline an auto.

I'd be really interested to see the response that a pure ruderalis has to topping... although that, too, might open up a can of worms and beg the question of...
If ruderalis really is an indica variety/strain that acclimated to harsh northern (or high elevation) climates, will they then have the chance to express those indica traits when given the appropriate conditions..? And, thusly, fuck up this whole hypothetical situation I have in my stoned-ass brain..?
