I found myself needing a new ballast a while ago and I was wondering about that. It is hard to find much info about the select-a-watt and using lower wattage bulbs. After researching what I could find, I didn't feel confident that it would be safe and ended up buying a 315cmh ballast/bulb,socket combo so I could use the same hood and it worked good but I wish I could have learned more about that select-a-watt. I do dim my hps at times but it makes me cringe.

I like my 315 cmh too. Powerful little bugger.

does it matter what type of hood i get? on amazon the " budget hps set ups" come with hoods, ballast, and the whole set up. if i was to get the budget set up and put a hortilux bulb on in it, would it work?
The hps bulbs are a standard type that should work across all hps fixtures/hoods, you only have to worry about dual or single ended.

Dual or single what? Also from what I'm gathering it really only matters on the ballast and bulb type right?
Some bulbs are single end and some are dual end. I just mean if you are for example looking at getting a 600 watt single ended hps ballast and hood (almost all 600s are single ended) it will work with any 600 watt single ended hps bulb, if you are looking at say, a 1000 watt dual end setup, then you need a 1000 watt dual end bulb. If you get a ballast with multiple watt settings then you can run any matching bulb, so a 600 watt setup may also allow you to run 400 and 250 watt bulbs, that is a nice feature even if it costs a little more.

Ballasts are not created equal for hps. That said yes you can run any ballast and hood as long as it is the right wattage for the bulb.

But read about reflectors. I use air cooled glass enclosed in my little room.

Deep reflectors have a more direct downward blast while shallower wider reflectors are made to widen the footprint.

Depends on what you want and need like any tool.

Keep in mind your new hps will get hot as [email protected]#k , you need to get it in an enclosed hood , and run vent thru it with an inline / or squirrel cage fan , so consider those expenses .....

But it will be well worth your efforts...
