I think a lot of that stemmed from some bad blood from the get-go of when the alt.drugs (proto discussion forum) dudes who were pioneering the home mushcult frontier had a spat and split up between mycotopia and shroomery. It created a sort of partisan rift that seemed to invite a lot of heavy egotism and.. for whatever reason.. that attitude seems to keep perpetuating that way.
It's a hell of a lot more inviting than it once was.. but yeah, still rough around the edges. I have the same thoughts.. like.. for people doing mushrooms, it's a damn heated community.
Maybe something to do with all the ego loss... 🤔

I still like popping in from time to time.. I just have a shorter attention span for it these days.

Being a beginner i find myself reading all the usual newb threads. And the vast majority of the newb questions are answered with a blunt "use the search function dickwad" type response lol.

I lurk and read a lot there.. Thats about it. Certainly dont feel comfortable asking questions as someone new to the hobby.

As it does so many.
The problem with the "Ask away" at Shroomery is that asking generally leads to people spamming one or more of three things:
- UTSF!​
- It's bacterial!​
- [Link to Tek that you probably already looked at that may or may not have to do with your pertinent situation]​

Honestly, 90% of the time it's not the staff or seasoned members/Trusted Cultivators who spout that shit.
Don't get me wrong - they have their own rough edges.
But, for whatever reason, there's always this huge wave of novice growers who just hound new members who maybe don't comprehend the way the Teks are written or are simply just looking for clarification. I guess those novices feel like, because they've gotten through the shit storm, they can rain that shit down on someone else..?
I think that's a lot of times where the mods/TC's will also come off as assholes... trying to reel in the bullshit from people who've got one or two so-so grows under their belt and think they're Paul Stamets...
And, if I go back to my partisan rift mentality - there's also just a weird absolutism there to the methodology.. people are scarce to embrace the weird... Granted, a lot of times the weird is just a recipe for failure that people are trying to have others avoid, but it still feels stunted by 'which method is the best?' The RogerRabbits? The Hippie3's? Stamets? (Stamets is shat on there, too... sometimes duly, most of the time not.) For fucks sake, they're all basically the same thing even.

I dunno. I think the mushcult culture just started off on a weird foot and never really got its balance... at least as a whole community. There are, without a doubt, exceptional individuals all over it... but that's riddled with a lot of hostility between the lines...

I started off on Mycotopia and the community there was much much more inviting like this one... but the content just fizzled out and so did the membership... so it just kinda stagnated.
Shroomery, at the time, felt like going to an ICP show with a bunch of dudes who sold drugs out of trash bags...

I dunno where I'm going with this ramble...
Basically, there isn't a great sense of all-inclusive community in online mushroom cultivation world. There are really wonderful people with really extensive knowledge. But all the information you could ever need to grow an ounce or a warehouse of mushrooms is available there.

I haven't visited Mycotopia in nearly a decade... I might see if there's been any revitalization there...

For sure, and dont get me wrong i read a LOT of threads over at shroomery. It has an enormous wealth of info to peruse, I just dont have the desire to engage in discussion there.
The farm and one other forum are about the only online forums i engage in. Even the rest of the weed forums are full of assholes.

And yeah i see Stamets get trashed over there quite a bit, usually because of things he said or did like 20 years ago that he has changed his position on. Im not sure how anyone can trash talk a guy like Paul S, he clearly loves mushrooms and seems like a really down to earth guy.

Agreed. I've run the gamut through the weed discussion forums over the past... jeez.. 15 years now. Much of the same egotism and hostility.
Only ever absorbed and posted very sporadically until I found this one... y'all got a special flava' 😢

Yeah... the Stamets thing seems like a lot of hearsay and butthurt about him being a successful businessman; and, yeah, outdated information... but they don't shit on the McKenna brothers (O.T. Oss/O.N. Oeric) nearly as much...? Iunno.
It's a resource 🤷‍♂️

Is it just me, or does Paul Stamets sound like hes on magic mushrooms all the time? I know he had a stutter at one time but there is just something about his delivery, the way he speaks that sounds like hes buzzin on shrooms. Like you can hear it in his voice.

It wouldnt surprise me in the least.

At least in the past, he was very open about his psychoactive mushroom use. Which was a lot.
And I think he's on the pioneering front of microdosing, so... 🤔

I'll bet he's either in a permanent afterglow or maybe on a microx2 dose...

Thats exciting as hell @1diesel1! What variety are those? I seriously cant wait to see some pinning action.
Ive read you should paint the bottom sides of the tote black or line it with a black trash bag to prevent light hitting the sides to reduce side pinning. For next time perhaps..

These two shoeboxes are knotting up nicely, Ive got the vent holes covered in micropore tape now, and i think ill have a fan blow on them for a few mins a day pretty soon here to try and get the flush going. So far, I havent misted or fanned them at all. But they have a nice amount of tiny water droplets on the surface, so i think pinning is not too far off. Primordia is forming all over the place.

Do you think the window light is sufficient @beluga or should i throw up a T5? Does spectrum matter?

As far as I know, light is not a pinning trigger. It's mostly gonna be moisture and air.. light gives them some pigmentation and (might be wrong on this) some direction to grow. I've seen tubs fruited in complete darkness and they just end up really pale and spindly/haphazardly growing.

The liners work well because they provide a more flexible wall/floor that keeps the sides and bottom of the substrate from getting those surface conditions that initiate pinning.

Window light is definitely sufficient. If it gets any direct sun, that may be an issue.
I've done a lot of growing in a room that only received ambient lighting from windows... works quite well.

Huh, interesting stuff. What i had read said that Light, evaporation and temperature were the 3 main pinning triggers. I would have used a black liner rather than paint had I known that. Next time. Like any other hobby there is a lot of headscratching over here figuring out whats myth and whats legit.

And yeah it doesnt get any direct sunlight in that window, only indirect light.

Also to update, my peurto rican petrie dish looks weird like something went wrong. Not sure if its bad or not, i think some condensation from the lid may have dripped onto the agar. The Amazonian though so far looks very aggressive, its almost doubled in size in 3 days after taking a sample out of the slant. Growing nicely outward from the center and very stringy rhizo looking mycelium.

Yeah, definitely a more recent ideology that light doesn't make it pin. I'm not even sure if that applies to all mushrooms, but cubes and pans at least follow that rule.

Otherwise yeah, evaporation rate is the biggest one I can think of for cubes cause they do well in the same temperature throughout their life cycle. Other species like oysters are queued by a drop in co2 rates.. cubes are less sensitive to that and seem to fruit even in high concentrations.

It's pretty much just a matter of getting your substrate optimally hydrated and keeping even, optimal surface conditions to get nice pinsets. That and being contaminate-free. That's another trigger, but not in the optimal way 😄

Doubling in size in three days is a little suspicious, but can definitely happen with more vigorous cultures... depending on what amount it doubled.

The jar is fruiting now, the one you told me to put a plastic bag over with some air holes.

Well tickle my ass, I’ve been waiting patiently for this PF jar to start fruiting.
Told my wife last night if nothing by Christmas I’m pulling the plug.
