Every fan we have in the house gets crud on the fan blades. We routinely take the fan apart and clean the blades with ordinary dish detergent and hot water. We clean them once or twice a year. I think the crud is just an accumulation of sticky stuff and other stuff that sticks to the sticky stuff. Just about anything that's airborne can stick to the fan blades. We have air purifiers in many rooms and those collect amazing amounts of crud, too.
