I know Redwood would would work better. But they are 6 bucks a board.
that would cost bout $80
But, I got these fence boards at lowes for 2 bucks each.
Then found some on craigs list for a buck...going there tomorrow

12- 5foot X 5inch Fence boards = $24.
1 8ft 2x4 cut into 2ft pieces = $1.50
few dozen 1 5/8 screws = .50

Took about an hour to put together with a couple smoke breaks :)

I loosened up the ground a bit underneath. .View attachment 210229

And Put 1/2 chicken wire on the bottom to keep the gophers out View attachment 210230

Put 9 cuft in there so far...gonna put a few cuft of pearlite and another 8 or 9 ft of soil.View attachment 210227

I hope to grow a couple 6ft round bushes in it ;)
I plan to feed with A1 nutes and the tea recipes I'm finding here at the farm. :)

This looks really good and very, very cheap!!! Congratulations on saving quite a few dollars. I bought my planter box for more than 400 dollars from this site. I kind of feel bad that I did not find your post earlier!!! But such is life I guess. You did some really nice job on that planter box, good for you!

Awesome planter box brother. Looks deep. How much soil does it take to fill one of those?

Nice beds Ken. How long do you find the wood lasts before it starts decomposing?

I've used colorbond for raised beds in the past. Figured it wouldn't break down like wood, but it did get damned hot when the sun hit it and dried out the soil in contact with it.

Im not sure how long they will last mun.
The ones I made last year with scrap plywood are still good..
I also made some last year from old crappy wood too and they are still fine.
I pretty sure these beds will be usesable for 5 or 6 years no pr0blem.

I made a bed from steel studs last year also ( used them at work)
and it does get a little warm...but the plants do ok in it.

But I dont think I would use metal again

Yeah, I wouldn't use metal again either. I think wood is preferable. I might coat them with oil to help them last a little longer, but even without, I think your estimate for how long they should last is pretty accurate.

Nice shot of the metal in action!
