You never know what you can find when you blow apart heterosis in the F2! But yeah the personality has been worn down.

Thats the draw.

Im still waiting for something better than ghost train haze though. Maybe another decade of over breeding will do it. :-)

I will leave that path to the people with the room lol.

My main interest is in finding the oldest school classic shit i can and then crossing that with landrace-adjacent strains like the space ace operates in. I figure this is the closest I can come to continuing the project the breeders in the 60s and 70s into the 80s were after before things went pear-shaped. Also it should lead to good hybrid vigor, and the material should be "messier" and less worked.

The selections people were doing after that were under extreme duress due to political realities and that's just kinda bad karma, ya know? Kinda?

Here's the problem with that. What some of these breeders are selling as old school classic shit is a FAR cry from what we used to score back in the day.

Dude is right. So far with my foray into modern genetics, the only breeders I like so far are BOG, HSC, and Hazeman for their kush. HSC has some old school that I'll pop this coming season.

I'm sure some of the guys on here can point us to good breeders of confirmed classic strains without a problem. (Hint hint lol)

Bonsai time. Ok guys I'm gonna bitch really quick. There is a shit ton of half bonsai cannabis on the web. It drives me nuts. There are a few components that are necessary to have a plant in a bonsai format.

Shallow grow container. I use 3 inch deep 8 x 6 bonsai pots from Amazon. This allows growth to be slowed and height restricted while promoting healthy root and plant development because...

Root trimming and maintenance. Right the antithesis in a typical pot grow is micro anything. So touching the roots is a cardinal sin. Not here. It's necessary. If anyone wants to be bored with the technique, say so and I'll whip out my Fisker's and micro rake and document it.

Top side training and pruning. In bonsai there are traditional rules and shapes to follow. In my grow room, that's where I stop. For me the beauty of the plant comes from the plant. So for the first year or so I'll nudge it this way and that and see what it does. Sometimes I'll wire them up early, sometimes just tie downs. The end result is a combination of a living art project and a momma clone machine.

Both of these plants just got trimmed. The larger is the momma responsible for the last round of Purple Mountain Majesty. I let her bush out. She was planted back in March. So we're going on 8 months. I just spent 3 hours on a radical prune... she was a mess. Root trim. Soil repack. Wire training. I did the same for the Blue Cookies momma to the right with the exception of the wire tie. It's too soon.

I'm thinking about getting a long skinny container for this one and vining it out. We used to grow that way along the ground in fence lines on fallow fields back in the day. So 100ft of low crawling weed happened a lot. Would be a neat throwback for sure. I'll take some pics of a single cola blue cookies I stunted (intentional) that's in the last part of flower. The nugs are phenomenal. You'll understand why I bonsai'd one to keep around for a minute lol :)

Totally fair! Just what I am after...the romance of the genuinely old shit is very strong.

@agseedco seems like a great lead to explore so far so that is what I am doing. Also trying nirvana because I have had good luck with their newer stuff.

when my breeder quit sending seeds he said i should go with Mr. Nice (Shantibaba) and Motarebel. And from the crosses i have been smoking based on their work i would definitely do that.

but i keep getting seeds gifted and haven't had to buy more in a few years. And its all good stuff. I will never get to the ones i planned.

MNS is next on my list. In fact I think he's a better lead than nirvana. But these bw seeds were cheap (got them while ordering chemdog because they were like 9 dollars for ten) and i had them and nirvana is, imo, another solid source. Nirvana claims their bw comes from him (ish) anyway. Not that it's the same....MNS is using parental plants and what Nirvana is selling is based on an old 90s widow, but said 90s widow did come from MNS for the purposes of selling as black widow.

One day, hopefully soon, i will go pheno hunting through MNS stock of some sort. I admire him as a breeder immensely.

Thank you for the lead on motarebel. Have not explored their stuff at all.

mota goes back to woodhorse seeds originally I believe. If your tracking old breeders.

and i have a small vial of Shantibaba critical mass i was gifted that he feminized in his own garden. The few i grew were a bit freaky. Very purple leaves and potent as hell. I expect really varied phenos meant to pick for breeding.

Feminized breeding is much more advanced than the forums will have you believe. Bias against fems i guess. Ch9 has an article in skunk magazine outlining his process. I sure had great plants.

Interesting re fem breeding. I have some solution in case I want to try it....but idk when that will be. No time soon, anyway.

My whole life I have been interested in anything that sounds like magic to me. Literal magician stage magic as a child, then distance running, lifting, rock climbing, post calculus math, japanese, drawing, making music, cooking, bread making...feeling the chakras in the body during meditation. Opening the third eye... Things that mostly require feel or a knack according to a lot of people.

This probably will amuse people here, but my go to insult in dealing with people in a work context who are messing with me is "you talk about this like you read it in a book." And i mean it...that stuff has minimal respect from me in place of experience. Confusing the map for the territory is, imo, the root of suffering and besides that can really piss me off.

I have spent my intellectual life finding the edges of what can be communicated via language and then how to cultivate an awareness beyond that.

Right now what has me fascinated is those people who can find a good cannabis male.

So I'm going to try to develop that skill....Because it has immense romance to me.

Sorry coming in hot this morning.

Heres a Blue God male that is good enough for me to keep around to harvest pollen. I'm crossing him over a Blue Cookies clone from that tiny bonsai up there. That blue Cookies plant is like what MiMedGrower was describing. REALLY dark purple leaves. But the nugs it puts off are way frosty and tight. Both plants are predominate indica. Should be a nice mashup.

Awesome vigor and nice, tight clusters too. Gorgeous.

Harvest time...! Love this stuff. Trimming to me is like unwrapping a Christmas present.

These were both rapidly flowered clones for a quick test grow of Mark from Strainly's gear.

Lemon Skunk #2
Fast grower but what I really like about this plant is the incredible density of the bud. It's off the wall. The citrus skunk smell is good, bordering 9n over powering. The lack of a lot of frost pissed me off until I broke the test bud in half. It's all crammed into there. Smell, stone, taste. I like the plant.

Blue Cookies
Again this was a hurried clone and I'm sure not close to what one treated right will do. Nugs are tight and the frost is heavy. Test nug was glue. I like this plant too.

Very cool your growing out this stuff from Mark and posting results, I got a bunch of seeds as well recently. Have not got to them yet as I have enuff going on right now. Great info, thanks.

I told him I would, so I am. I've got all 42 of his strains and have popped half of them. Heres the good bad and ugly.

On the left is his auto Master Kush. On the right is his auto purple headband. Each gallon jar is from a single normally grown, not topped, not defoliated plant grown in 5 gal bags. Both were long for auto plants. Smoke is good. Bud is good.

I like his Lemon Skunk #2, Blue Cookies, Blue God, and Girl Scout Cookies a lot too. All photo/regs.
They grow right, smoke good. Zero issues. Currently running his LA Confidential, Chemdog #4, OG Cake, and Blue God. The diaries are on GD.

I've had a lot of males under optimum conditions. I've had a lot of non-viable seeds. But then again they were less than a dollar per seed.

I'm building my seedbank and clone mommas back and I took a chance and rolled the dice. I didn't get everything I wanted out of the first half by any stretch. Net net I ended up with 4 clone mommas out of 13 photo strains planted so far. Depends what happens with these last 4. 1 has already turned male. I might end up with 7 clone mommas best case. 8 strains were autos. 1 non viable. 2 males, one shitty hermie, 3 harvested.

I was looking for some midline foundation strains. I'd do it again if the purpose was the same. It would cost me a fortune to attempt to do this at $10 a bean. He gave me a lot of extras. I probably ended up with close to 400 seeds.

But... it's a lot of work.

Heres the best I've been able to pull out of HSC's Purple Mountain Majesty. I think I've got the strain down finally. Ive grown a number of these this season. This round was about producing a 30 inch single cola plant in a 5 gal grow bag. Got 3 of them with a 4th behind it as well as a mainlined monster that just started spitting flower. If I can get these results out of a traditional mainline? I'll pee myself lol!

Oh and i hope the LA Confidential works out....that's a nice indica for sure. Really nice. Big time power, frosty af, and a great taste.

...only took 8 months to figure it out... :))) The strain grows way different than its cousins Pineapple muffin and Squirt. Damn thing shoots up with barely any foliage. Flip it to flower and it turns into all buds. Weirdest fucking thing ever. So the first few went tall and then I did a bush. It HATES defoliation. Thought it would pop more foliage. Nope. Hates fimming. Doesnt have the desired effect, just way too long existing side branching. And that led to these damned things take up WAAAAAY too much space for a 2oz dry yield great smoke or not.

So then came the bonsai techniques. Tap root trimming, root trimming, stunting through flowering. First two were fails. And then I went holy shit... the very last thing in my tricks bag worked. Veg in bonsai pot. Flip in bonsai pot. Hold for the plant to crown the cola. Hold for the first sign of root bound nute lock (cal/mag for this one), and into an5 gallon grow bag with the roots all loosened up. Bingo! Beautiful single fat ass cola, limited side branching and what is there is huge, and a space saver instead of a fng pig.

I've done the exact same with this mainline. Hoping for 7 of these colas out of 1 plant. Like I said. I'll pee myself. :))))
