I have inbred GDP and will grow F4's this year. Most have some purple, usually kicks in during flower. However, this male is from a new breeder pack I grew last year. Not sure how stable he is or who his daddy is. I've heard they (GDP) open pollinate with several males so your guess is good as mine. Crossed him with several girls and will grow those seeds this year to test him. He's lighter green in veg but gets very dark green with purple stems.

Sounds about right. I've crossed my GDP (skunky pheno) with lots of other strains and they still come out pretty much GDP. I mean, she's got some pretty strong genes that trumps just about anything you cross her with.

I agree. Although having DOM Purple doesn't always mean you'll get purple. I mean the amount of purple varies from plant to plant. Some are deep purple and some light purple or just hints of purple. Breeding for anthocyanin is easy but you really want to breed for LOTS of anthocyanin. The levels that turn the plant purple WITHOUT cooler temps.

I've grown so many purple strains and never a problem with PM. May be due to our low humidity though. I had 1 Ultimate Purple last year that got a little PM very late in flower (I let her go a little too long and her buds were huge and thick). GDP buds tend to be smaller and a little less dense.
I will say that spider mites LOVE GDP (sucks). I've seem them pass every other plant in the greenhouse to get to GDP. Them mites know what's up! They go for the good stuff!! I find GDP to be pretty tough though and she don't mind a few bugs. My Granddaddy Blue F3 (GDPxBlueberry) is great for this as the mites don't like her at all.
I agree with your comment about anthocyanin...to add to the purple debate, the purplish in the plants with cold temp intolerance is IMO a molybdenum deficiency and the anthocyanin influence MAYbe is a toxicity, I'm focused more on linalool for my purple project...after all that said and done, nothing is concrete with this plant, not even if it comes from an indian(dot not feather) plant geneticist...@lino I found some more candidates for the phat leaf bish...one is a Lemon Fizz X StarDog and the other is a Stardog Bx4 X StarDog Bx7, I'm not sure at what point I can call it An IBL. I'm about over all this science political correct vernacular bullshit tho ...

You could be right but many plants turn purple with warm temps too.

In cooler environments, plants produce less chlorophyll, allowing the other colors to show through. Colors that are already there, just covered up with green.

Anthocyanins are also produced to protect the leaves as the green chlorophyll/chromophors are recycled. Photosynthesis in bright and cold conditions (Fall time) is less efficient leading to improper shuttling of electrons from the photocenters and can cause oxidative damage to the chloroplasts. Anthocyanins act as antioxidents to protect from this.

Anthocyanins also tend to absorb lots of short wavelength light (blue and purple) and reflect almost exclusively very long wavelength light (red and orange).

Most agree purple cannabis originates in the Hindu Kush mountain chain. This is a formidable mountainous region, and plants adapted to become highly resistant to drought and arid conditions (which is why they do so well in Colorado). In fact many theories suggest that this was the region where cannabis originated and that Hindu Kush, therefore, was the original cannabis strain, before the plant appeared in other areas, with different features. If this is true, it would explain why so many strains have the potential for purple.

That male has a lite grn look
He was very young in that pic. Young leaves come in lighter and get darker.
Here's a better pic of him I took today. He's very dark green, older leaves have a green-black color. Most leaf stems are solid red/purple. T5's - 18/6 - 75°.
I put a Lilac leaf (bright green) in there for contrast. He's a bit darker in person though.

He sprouted like this. Many of my seeds pop out their shells with some purple already there. Then they green up in the sun. I did a small experiment last year. I marked all seedlings that sprouted purple. Sure enough, those were the ones that got the purplest. They don't need the cold to turn.

I just got slammed with projects. I will be able to continue with the Fat Leaf breeding project but my plate is to Full. more on that on the AMA thread. I will have to allow some of my close friends help me with my plants and my part of the FLBP IF they have time. We already help each other and their helping with FLBP anyway so I trust these trained growers but I'm horrible at delegating lose of my grow control.

@epitome ""more candidates""
YES - I got room Personally for your combo's. In fact, it turns out , I got whole lot more room, but my grow time is Maxed out so the FLBP is going to kick my ass on time... And I cant slip up with males. That Stardog NICE, Star Male would be interesting. ,, @MamaBear has a purp Orchestra , She be like the Maestro of the Grand Purple ElectricLite Orchestra.

I was asked, update;
I am not putting a male in a room of females in this round of pollen crosses. On selected female strains of the FLBP I will be isolating branch specific for 20 - 80 seed product of crosses. This summer WE will be crossing how WE desire. Hopefully WE are DOCUMENTING and saving mothers so when We create a worthy cross we can replicate it . I will have many of the stains in some form.

@BigBeeBud came thru with our Katsu Plant. BBB, think about this, the plant has been in the family over a decade, The plant survived raids, closets, basements, dispense thefts, dusty garages, and when I walked into the 200 plant dispense to fix it And the Katsu Plants stood out, shined and still takes center stage in the garden, THAT WHY I BEEN DIVING YOU UP THE WALL, OCD was kicking in man, sorry... But thks, I did not want to lose that plant!

4 crops, on the Three of the crops I study seed before Germ. @MandyJane obserrved me studying this hypothesis.

crop 1
7 plants, 6 were my seeds . Sex was undetermined. 2 males.

crop 2
8 plants, I picked this sex at seed at 100%. All females ECD x Tahoe.

crop 3
6 plants, I guessed the sex to be all females and it was.

crop 4
15 plants , my (ECD x Tahoe.Lino) crop, I kept the 3 seeds I guessed to be males before germination. So out of 29 seeds sexed I guessed all 3 males correctly.
M1
M2
M3

Not sure yet, I have had things like this happen and not turn out to be what I thought so I will be looking into seed sexing.

@epitome - @MamaBear - @BigBeeBud and the rest of you guys helping on the FAT LEAF - I need a few more days and I will be in contact,,,, I got to get some other projects out of the way.

I will make the FAYT LEAF thead soon. App reported 31` F . I brought males inside. Look out side and we got 2 in of snow... :sweating:

Not much fatter … but they came from thin leaf Mexican genetics so im content with the progress…
