What you're attempting to do by growing in a 2 x 2 x 4.5 is something that I have zero experience with. Can it be done? Absolutely, others have ... just now the rules kind of change from what I'm used to. Small plants aren't what I usually grow. Typical is 4 - 6 plants in my 5 x 5 or 6 - 10 in my 6.5 x 6.5.
If I were to do this, I would flower young and limit my growth to only a handful of branches per plant. With what you're attempting to do, topping makes sense for most strains.
