I've got these "neotropical" birds that showed-up 4 or 5 years ago,
moving north with climate change;
they nest (among other spots) underneath banana leaves...
...they are extremely shy and have taken all this time,
watching me interact with the other birds and creatures,
to expose themselves more than just peeking around tree trunks.
Two or three days ago I saw a plant shaking;
then another, and another, zig zagging through the garden;
my first thought was a crazed rabbit,
I went out to check for damage and a Hooded Oriole flew off--
no damage...
Diet:
"...May especially favor caterpillars, also eats beetles, wasps, ants, and many others..."
Over the last 10 days or so I've had hundreds of the big green beetles
(that I named the baby boy hummingbird after);
they eat a few plate leaves and then lay eggs in the garden,
I don't know if the larvae do any damage but I don't like 'em
