As far as Bandog, you nailed it! I was doing some training and a couple had a pack of Pits and Mastiffs. I had never heard "Bandog" before. They had some specimen show dogs, Blue Pits and Cane Corsos.....my boy Gunny definitely looked like a hybrid between the two. They were the first to tell me I had a Bandog, good eye! From what I understand a Cane Corso is an Italian Mastiff, and your Mastiff dosn't look like a Cane Corso. Maybe you can educate me on the difference?

Yeah I thought he was a bandog. I have liked those for awhile. Seen a few do some work on some wild pigs as well...they can be pretty gritty. They are usually either Cane Corso X APBT or Neapolitan Mastiff X APBT but I believe they started with the Neo's.

As for the dog I used to have he was a Neapolitan Mastiff or Italian Mastiff and he was the sickest one I have ever seen period. I will have to find some pics of when he was older. He was a bad mofo. They originated from Italy and were used as dogs of war back then. They would be used in battle or used as gladiator dogs in the Colosseum. They were also used by the romans to watch over prisoners and slaves. Now they are mostly show dogs and to be honest its hard to find a good Neo anymore. They have mostly been bred into show dogs with excessive dewlap and wrinkles but there are still a few good breeders of working dogs if you know who to look for. One dude had them in South Africa where he used them to keep wild animals in check. Has some crazy stories of them and Hyenas getting into it lol. He also has some APBT's and he did his own Bandogs.

The Cane Corso are also from Italy and can be known as "Italian Mastiffs" as well but I believe it's a newer breed than the Neo? They were used as a more farm utility dog back in the day but now are used more as show dogs. I have seen some do protection work and they can be a great guard/companion dog.

As for the difference between the two. The Neos are generally larger and more Mastiff like where males usually run 120-170lbs although some can push 2oo(mine was around 175). Where a big Cane Corso is usually just over 100+. The Neos like I said are more Mastiff like in appearance and are taller, heavier, bigger boned dogs. They also have more excess skin and delap. Where the Cane Corso's are a much smaller more agile bred...which came in handy for their farm utility role i'm sure and have less wrinkles and loose skin.

My brother, I could not be more impressed with your response, thank you for that. I had a pig dog in mind when I began his training. My most sincere apologies for the loss of you pup.

I very much enjoyed the "war dog" part of the studying of this breed, I mean really, a true "Dog of War"? YES!

My pup Gunny has incredible pray drive. He is a straight menace in the field and when put on task, but around the house he has the traditional dopey/lazy behavior.

Regarding the changes in the breed due to show standards, I wish they would stay tight. They are doing the same with Labs and breeding them smaller/wider. I love the jouls and all, but appreciate functional perfection over anything.

I mostly work with two breeds when I training bird hunting dogs. German short-haired pointers, and Labrador retrievers. For upland game hunting, which is quail/chuckar/pheasant, GSPs own it. They are upland machines.

On the other hand, any time water is involved......the Lab is KING:

The season starts next month, I'll be sure to get a ton of pics of comp dogs in action! I will also be jumping Chop in the DockDogs competition again this year. That event is always a lot of fun. Last year he jumped 16.5', not to bad for a tank :D

Alot of shit is taking off at your place bro... got a killer line up of genetic's - how do you like the green crack always been interested in it but never got any beans but i have heard people say it does not pack much punch ... but i dig the name ... still might give it a run one day... who's strain is it DNA ? ...
