just to chime in, i have listened to the podcast, think theres good info in it. I've been smoking in los angeles since 1991. heavy daily smoker and used to go buy "dub sacks" 20 dollar bags that were about a gram. during that era, everything was referred to as "chronic" some people would use the term "dank" "skunk" or "indo". they were all terms used to describe AAA grade top shelf cannabis. people were not using strain names to identify their product. unless you met a grower, you were not going to hear anything referred to as northern lights or silver haze or bubblegum etc. i started selling small amounts 1/8 to oz around that same time. i came across a lot of different cannabis. a lot of different batches. i would buy from many different folks i knew, 1/4 lbs to 1/2 lbs. out of all these batches from 1991/1992 all the way through 2000 i never saw, smelled, or tasted anything that was similar to what we now call OG KUSH. mind you i also would smoke from other peoples stashes, other sellers batches, i would buy personal amounts from all over because i love to smoke and i love variety. los angeles, south bay, san fernando valley. these were the areas i bought from, smoked from, sold in. so i will not speak about florida or norcal. i never came across the trademark og flavor profile and aroma until 2001. it pretty much appeared out of nowhere. i had a buddy who i used to buy my 1/2 lb from tell me to light up this half of an already burned joint that was sitting in his ashtray. the flavor was ridiculous. pungent, sweet, skunky, tasted better at the half way burned point than ANY fresh bud i had ever smoked. it was not the classic lemon/fuel that you find in the tahoe, sfv, ghost etc line it was like a combo of the bubba which at the time i had also never seen, but am familiar with now, and the faintest hint of that citrus fuel. it was more sweet and skunky but absolutely had the fuel in there somewhere. it was 550 bucks an oz and it was damn near impossible to get any. i ended up buying an ounce whenever it was available, once a month, once every two months, sold 1/8 for 80 bucks just to close friends. the flowers were not OG looking. they were small, sticky, dark green, very fluorescent looking trichs, red hairs...looks mostly like bubba, but thee most pungent, insane aroma. at the end of 2002/beginning of 2003 is the first time i tasted and smelled the classic OG KUSH lemony, citrus, fuel, skunk smell. another 550 per oz variety with the best examples being grown in sylmar by a crew of mexican guys, they called their particular variety CRACK KUSH and it went for 30 a gram by the time i got my hands on it from a persian girl i knew. best smoke I've ever tried to this day. also was getting some from the cal state northridge area. by the time 2004 rolled around i was in a crew of a couple growers, one of whom STAUBACH had been one of the original valley boys running the cut. rockwool, super nutes, pro silicate, super oxy, powder kool bloom. 1 lb per 1000 watt 56-63 day cycle, no co2, recirculating, hand watered. absolute fire. by day 42 it was so greasy that touching a flower would first make your fingers slippery then two rubs later upon oxidation so sticky you couldn't pull your fingers apart. scissor hash was so shiny it looked wet. absolute monstrous oil production on this variety. he said this variety had come from new york to florida to lake tahoe to the san fenando valley. this was before anybody ever thought of the name TAHOE OG. we used to call it the pk for PURE KUSH..even though the growth pattern was the opposite of a kush indic a. so as far back as 2004 I've heard of this strain coming from florida through lake tahoe which corroborates many different versions of the history of this strain, the one variance in this version is his claiming it came from new york originally. i know the new york to florida routes are heavily trafficked so it could be possible that the strain made its way down south. ands then from florida out west. this is just a story I'm passing on from a reputable source who was growing this strain as early as 2001 in the sfv. the rest of this is my version of history. now days you've got 100 different 0g cuts. i say they are of two distinct variations....citrus(FIRE OG, TAHOE, SFV, GHOST etc) the other variation i call soapy(LOUIS XIII) louis is the only named variation I've tried that gives me this soapy, skunky flavor. anybody notice this flavor difference?
