This is my first real grow!

Agreed, I feed them after theyre fully awake. Not only the plant push nutes to the roots when it sleeps (like captain said and one of the reasons I like to cut before they get light) but also if the night is cold the roots are not gonna like the cold water.

Yep, can def shock a sensitive strain, it’s just a good way to do it, eliminate the variables.

Beautiful plant, looking good man! You got a really nice canopy of tops there.

I usually wait 3 hours as well btw.

From what I understand, Cannabis, during lights on hours, is primarily photosynthesizing meaning it's making sugar for the plant to use while at lights off is where it uses those sugars and other metabolites to make resins and other chemicals. Typically, production peaks an hour or so before lights on.

If you are watering on a regular basis then I don't think it matters at what time you water only that there is a level of moisture in the soil that can maintain all the processes that are happening. Plants don't sleep. They just change the processes they perform.

As far as water temperature, the way it was explained to me is that colder water will hold more O² than warmer water. Some people feel that because of this it is better to give them cool water, around 68°, with the idea that the water will hold more O² for the roots to have access too. This was one of those hippy lessons that turned out to be technically true but for the wrong reasons than they thought. One of my mentors told me that weed likes cooler water because in nature they are usually fed by natural springs which typically run cold but it wasn't temperature of the water so much as the more oxygen rich water that the springs were supplying.

Once I had access to botanists, they told me that cool water temps really only applied to soil and the benefits were small in comparison to other things like better draining media raising the O² access for the roots. Cool or not, O² will equalize depending on the air pressure around it so regardless of how much air you pump into your water the O² levels will eventually even out. Most botanist and master growers agreed that the cooler water holding more oxygen wasn't as useful as choosing the right media. In fact, a couple of the botanists I had access to preferred warmer water to keep the root temps higher to increase the viscosity of the sap for better flow making it easier for the plant to distribute the nutrient ions it's taken up.

It's a give and take. Cooler water will hold more O² but warmer water will reduce the viscosity of the sap in the plant. Pick your poison.

Now thats some food for thought right there. Explains why DWC works so well, and good to know about warmer water making the sap run smoother too!

One day id love to have a grow with some form of growing media on top, then aquaponics under the media and air stones right under where the roots dip down into the aquaponics tank. Thats gonna take some tiiiiiiime before i get there 😅

Look up SIP(Self Irrigated Planters).
Iv actually looked into those just a little bit, while i was trying to figure out fertigation. They seemed pretty cool, i should look more into them

I generally like to wait until the plants have had a little bit of time to wake up and I’ll usually hit them around 11 AM lights on which is three hours after they come on for me. I want them to eat all day long if you feed them at night, your medium is quite literally just wet all night because the plants dropping everything it pulled out of the soil back down into the soil when the lights go out so I always feed when the lights are on.

Great job! What a beautiful plant. Way to utilize the available space! ✊🏼

You guys are all awesome! Thank you for the info and compliments :)

It sounds like iv been watering at the right time 😁 starts about 40 minutes after lights come on, give 4L total over the course of 80 minutes, so that means watering finishes about 2 hours after lights on. Pretty close to what you all seem to do!

Check out the awesome colors coming out now! The hairs turning orange and the trichomes almost have a pinkish hue. Unsure if thats another weird illusion being caused by the LEDs

Edit: lol forgot to upload the pictures 😅

Beautiful!

Not much to do now other than to keep an eye on the leaves and keep her fed with what she wants.

Let's go! Those flowers get a fat uh la la! Very sexy! How's the smell? Spicy? It looks spicy!

Hell yeeeaaa!!! Im gonna add more of that purple cow fertilizer tomorrow right before watering, and then one more time the day before i go on vacation. Then no more nutrients for the rest of her grow cycle! Maybe..... looked into flushing and listened to Bruce Bugbee, seemed like he said it doesnt make a big difference in soil grows. Still really unsure about that part.

Hell yea man theyre gettin fat now! 😁 the smell is actually a little garlicky, kinda sweet, and if i put my face in the middle of the plant i get this really good orange citrus smell

I took a bit of advice from a post I think from @Mikedin and I completely dehydrated them the final week and stopped feeding week 8

How did that work out? I've always thought that doing that will interrupt their growth mode. I'm guessing he does that to purge the plant of nutrient ions?

I'm not a proponent of "flushing". Most people use it incorrectly by flooding their pots with 3 -5 times the pot size removing nutrient and microbes. Apparently the idea is to remove any available food in the soil and have the plant rely on the nutrient that is in its branches so that, come harvest time, the plant will have minimal amounts of nutrient ion in it improving the flavor and smoothness of the smoke.

I've done side by sides and I didn't notice any difference.

IMO, flushing should only be done when the media has too high a concentration of nutrient ions. Another thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't fix the root problem. Why is there too much nutrient in the soil?

I prefer tapering vs flushing. Tapering is when you ladder down the strength of your feed solutions so that when you get to the last week or so you are essentially feeding it pure water. Doing it this way preserves the microbial life in the soil and keeps your plant in growth mode rather than survival mode so that you squeeze that extra 2 or 3 weeks growth at the end of the grow.

I guess i should watch my words a little more carefully hahaha i definitely dont plan on dumping insane amounts of water into the soil, i would agree that doesnt sound like the best idea. Tapering would be a way better word to describe what im planning on doing. I wanted to stop giving nutrients at a certain point to help lower the sugars in the buds to make the smoke less harsh. At least iv heard thats a thing. This being my first grow, i obviously have no real idea if thats true or not lol

My sample buds were dried in a rush so the flavor was lacking but the smoke was smoother than what I am use to buying. But the dehydration could have been the reason 4 of my ladies fell over in the same day. They only made it 5 days of dehydration then I had to chop to keep them off the floor.

Todays water day! Feels like it came so fast, that previous timelapse really helped me dial in exactly when i should be watering. I nailed it this time. You can tell when shes thirsty in this timelapse amd the previous one by looking at the leaf towards the bottom right, its the heaviest drooper lol definitely glad i do this ever time, its really helping a lot!

Shes getting so frosty! And the buds are finally getting thicker than my thumb lol also THE SMELL!!! Holy shit if i could describe it. Almost reminds me of like.... grape pixie sticks. I dont smell the garlicky planty smell anymore at all. And its starting to stink up the lung room too! My lady and I even smelled it standing outside of the room last night, got really excited by that!

Anyways....
Enjoy 😁
