Myth Busted: Eating Eggs Has Virtually No Effect on Cholesterol Levels

(NaturalNews) Eating eggs does not significantly raise the body's cholesterol levels, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Surrey and published in the Nutrition Bulletin of the British Heart Foundation.

The researchers reviewed the results of several different studies on eggs and nutrition, concluding that eggs did not contribute significantly to the body's cholesterol levels. Although eggs are in fact a high-cholesterol food, the researchers note that only one-third of the body's cholesterol comes from dietary sources; the rest is produced by the body from saturated fats. As a consequence, saturated fat intake plays a far more significant role.

"The ingrained misconception linking egg consumption to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected," researcher Bruce Griffin said. "The amount of saturated fat in our diet exerts an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amounts of dietary cholesterol."

The researchers note that other factors, such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle or smoking also have greater effects on cholesterol levels or the risk of cardiovascular disease than egg consumption does.

"The UK public does not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat," Griffin said. "Indeed, they can be encouraged to include them in a healthy diet, as they are one of nature's most nutritionally dense foods."

Up until 2007, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) recommended that people limit their intake of eggs to three per week, as a way of reducing the risk of heart disease. That advice is now considered outdated, however.

"We recommend that eggs can be eaten as part of a balanced diet," said Victoria Taylor of the BHF. "There is cholesterol present in eggs, but this does not usually make a great contribution to your level of blood cholesterol. If you need to reduce your cholesterol level, it is more important that you cut down on the amount of saturated fat in your diet from foods like fatty meat, full fat dairy products, and cakes, biscuits and pastries."

I'm no nutritional expert but I notice many people cook eggs with butter & a lot use cheese in combination. I'm sure they say to avoid cakes/biscuits because of butter? So, if one eats eggs as a healthy diet I can see that being super nutritious but if one eats eggs with fatty meat, butter & cheese then the results have got to be somewhat negatively effecting cholesterol. Granted it's not the EGG being the culprit but the way many eat eggs may not be good for cholesterol.

Fatty meat, full fat dairy and cakes/biscuits/pastries are the american diet Chickenman and we wonder why all these folks are on pills...lol
I bet your eggs are solid, we got local eggs all over here and they are yummy compared to the mass produced eggs.

I wonder where the anti abortion folks stand on eating eggs, rofl

my first successful diet was
1) two hard boiled eggs - no yokes eating and toast with a little jelly - breakfast
2)lunch - boiled chicken
2a) 40mins in gym
3)dinner what ever i was making - no eating after dinner . worked like a charm

my second successful diet
1) drug addiction - and after becoming clean i was at my ideal weight just needed to build up strength - back to the gym for a year , now no gym and even when smoking i seldom over eat .... spent a good 10 yrs over weight not going back to be described as the heavy dude but was over using energy drinks

now i'm a juicer day 2 - curious as to weather my metabolism will slow down and hunger will set in after smoke secession as before my first successful diet when i was smoking the seedy Mexican weed the food i could eat in one night amazed me and I was only 30-40lbs over ideal weight makes me wonder how someone can get to insanely high weights that you see

since our accident that is one of the issues Ive had and why they have me on marinol. I went from 240 to 155 in 2years. They dont know why, I just have no appetite. Even with the marinol and the MMJ I just cant get the eating bug. I take daily vitamins, drink protein shakes, and when I do eat, I eat good food. Just cant gain any weight. I think its the stress and drugs they have me on, one day it will go away

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. They're starting to argue over the prime nesting spots, so I think I need to make more of the sub-prime nests more prime. I was thinking 'curtains.' You know, give 'em a little privacy for the lower nests? Whaddaya think?

What have I got planned? More cleaning, and more egg-poaching madness. I'm a fucking egg poaching ACE now, I got it DOWN.

Well, it just so happens that my mother *is* a nutritional expert. The bit about the cakes and biscuits isn't because of the butter, it's because of the types of carbohydrates.

It's a bit of a lengthy explanation, but it really has to do with how the government thinks Americans are mostly stupid (it's correct, but that's another issue) and the food pyramid. The food pyramid was really devised by the USDA, not by actual dietitians, and it didn't adequately emphasize the importance, or role rather, of processed carbohydrates and cholesterol levels, along with the types of body fat, which is also another VERY important indicator, better than BMI.

In fact, new research is showing that pastured meat, dairy and eggs are actually good for reducing bad cholesterol levels. The thing many folks don't realize is that your body needs some fats and cholesterols, mostly so that your nervous system will function properly. It's the proportions of each type of fat that can become problematic. The research is showing that animals raised on pasture, especially ruminants that have evolved to eat grass, not grain, manufacture higher amounts of good fats, and much lower amounts of bad fats, than those that are raised on prepared rations and grain.

Now, that's not to say that your diet of mostly veg is bad, it is in fact very good, especially if weight control is an issue. It is to say, however, that not all animal products are cut from the same cloth, and that cholesterol thing really should be talking about the role of carbohydrates and types of carbohydrates in our typically carbohydrate-rich diets.

And if you're having trouble getting weight *on* and keeping it on, lemme know, my mother has written a cookbook for you.

Waited all summer to fire up all the lights for the inside growing season. Now that everything is up and running we are having a heat wave in Colo. WTF, supposed to be getting into the mid 50's at night. Looks like I will be running the a/c quite a bit in the next few days. Too hot to go outside, fish, play golf or grow plants. 6,000 feet in elevation and 98 degrees yesterday! Having a bitch of a time keeping the temps in the mid 70's in the flower room. Will close everything up and hide from the heat today.

Thinking you are right. Sometimes nature gives us clues to what is coming. Humming birds left early this year. Last week they were sucking the feeders dry every day. Now they are hardly touched. Wondering if this is a sign of an early fall/winter. Also starting to see Canadian Geese, they don't usually start showing up until October. Don't like the heat but it's better than the cold and dark. Just like a farmer....always bitchen about the weather.

I will be in the dungeon flushing and feeding this morning. Time to start cleaning up in the veggie garden. Will be pulling the last of the beans and will take out what is left of the squash after the hail last week. Wish I had time to fish. Will try after the holiday weekend and all leave the mountains. I don't do holidays. Much more to myself early next week.
