If you don't have experience in any of those methods, try a soilless mix, it is pretty forgiving and is sterile. Mix perlite, vermiculite, and coco coir, or something along those lines. Once you know your room size, I'd say keep your light at 40 watts / sq ft minimum, and more is better...
