The slower the dry, the better the smoke.
The key is to let the plant live as long as possible to burn up the chlorophyll. This needs air to happen.
So rather than burping a jar, I use plastic containers with a vent cut in the lid.
A bit of masking tape let’s you keep the humidity as high as possible for as long as possible without condensation (mold).
The hang dry I slow down with a garbage bag or something to keep the humidity up.
Once the sugar leaves have dried out they won’t cure further, so it’s important to never let anything get crispy.
If you do it right you will have a golden brown bud with no green left.
These buds took 4 months the get below 60% rh. The smoke is brown like a fine Cuban cigar.
Here’s a better pic. That last one looks green. Must be the light.

This is a 16 week dry compared to a 7 week and a 5 week cure time.

dude i hang whole too, always, i was only explaning the temp and humidity. but yea for sure about more then one way to skin a cat. i have about 15 racks but dont use them hang whole all the time but im telling you try stretch to 3/4 week.slow your roll if you want the pro dry i aint lying or trtying to mess your shit up but youve put your plamts through veg and 10 weeks or 9 of flower 1-2 more weeks on dry scvhedule your girls will be thankionh you for it.maybe not your neighbiours.my point being the longer the better.mate you know what i love when a breeder gives you his personal select and you give him back his strain but your cut and it blows what they had out the water .the apreciation they have for that is unreal. but wne you cross and stabilise ive had mixed results ive had people get butthurt thats just jelpousy but in so many general breeders are happy as fuck to get somehting bck they had forgot or left behind. hoping to do that this summer with a very shit hot breeder who can easily smash any cup i will enter for him this year a couple of bits and crosess hopefully we are going to collab on. got some crazy terps people havent seen and i cant wait to be at the front of it but in the backround as usual...

i forgot to mention magnetic pull ,location, atmospheric pressure and sea elevation will effect a dry and a cure to some degree.dont know if its a massive chabnge.....as i ahvent tested it hard to test so many variants not worth it for me anyways. but i do find higher the elevation the better the results. at the moment im near 2000 feet (all my americanos) above sea level which is 610 meters (eu heads( if my quick math serves me good. and yes plants seem to love elevation!!!
Mmm I’m at 19’ above sea level and I don’t have a problem drying or curing

View attachment 378302 Hydrometer takes out alot of the guess work. I hang mine for four-five days then into paper bags for a day then into jars with a hydrometer. Let it sit for 12 hours to get a good reading then I burp jars until I get to 55-60% RH. Then it's storeable for long periods. I find that a 3 week cure is the soonest I like to smoke. After a month really great flavors start to appear. Best of luck !
Thank you for this !

HWhy would you freeze dry your weed? only if you plan on keeping your bud in a freezer? selling it next year?
Just got too much weed and a lot of dry ice?
The taste is not as fresh...can't get any better than fresh! freezing it...no longer fresh hmmm?
I know, I know...it was freshly frozen! nyet! freezing changes your buds original FRESH make up of turpines and such.
not worth the cost of ice, not enough Tupperware... freezer space...
Yes it works... but not seeing the why...
imo slow cure is best, even over the sublimation...
slow cure...that is after your hang dry (then I do a paper bag pre cure) then jar up. burp...burp...smoke. its simple... and free of cost and time.
I've done the water cure also...bleah! a waste also...

Just throwing branches in the corner of the garden and let the sun and air dry em, beat them over a screen and have the best fresh hash ever. it worked for thousands of years that way, and still does.

keep it simple
keep it fresh

not to argue on which is best for who...if it works for you, by all means keeper going.
just throwing my two cents in cuz that's what this sites for.
and throwing out the many ways of drying and curing is good for all.

and the only DANK that is DANK is the DANK that's FRESH and not FROZEN....da dank dank..lol
luv getting blaze on tapping words...
:)
Hey man, im live rosin guy. (Its relevant, you'll find out why) I had to go through a shit ton of science and expensive equipment to properly freeze dry freshly harvested cannabis to turn into dry sift, to press into live rosin. My live rosin goes for $80 a gram and people love it, do you know why? Because it tastes so much better, smokes so much nicer, gives a nice clean high. Do you know how? Because harvesting and flash freezing/freeze drying stops cannabinoids and terpenes from breaking down. They start degrading the moment they are removed from the root system. This works so well because all the moisture stays frozen / too cold to bond with cannabinoids/terpenes and all the good stuff is removed before it can degrade. Dry curing is different. It slowly breaks down the plant sugars which allow other terpenes and cannabinoids to for form. I havent looked into this sublimation method yet but freeze drying would work very well if you can remove moisture during the freezing process, otherwise you would have to unfreeze your weed just to cure it before its smokeable. If you are going to give an OPINION on something, thats cool, lets hear it. But if you are going to present information as factual, please use some science.

why only 4 weeks? is 5 or 6 or 52 too long? ive read that theres snobs out there that wont even smoke weed thats been cured for less than a year. does it just keep getting better? what do you do at 4 weeks? take them out of jars?

ive got a humidity meter (55% or so) and 58% boveda packs in my jars. I rotate and tumble the jars a little every 12 hours. do they still need to be burped with humidity packs?
Sorry for the late reply.
I consider 4 weeks a complete cure. Purists looking for perfection will never find it. That said, it doesn't mean you can't cure longer. And a longer cure will improve the weed. But the law of diminishing returns kicks in. 5 weeks is much better than 4. 10 weeks is great. 25 weeks may be a tiny bit better than 10 weeks, and 52 weeks only marginally better.

With hash, I've smoked shinny 10 year old temple balls that were better, but not *that much better than 1 year old hash.

I'm not entering the cannabis cup or anything like that, so I smoke after a good 4 week cure. You can wait longer, but is it worth it? I don't think so. Your buddies probably wouldn't even notice other than saying "nice weed". Then they'll forget about it.

I found a 2 year old vacuum bag of weed in a bin this winter. While they enjoyed it, not one person said "wow, awesome weed."

Whats the best process you say for proper curing
Drying also plays a big role in the final product. The slower the dry, the better the cure results. By better, I mean something that will taste great and smoke smooth. With a good drying and a good curing, your friends will definitely say "Wow... nice." without coughing their brains out.

So I'll address drying and curing with a short answer, and then a long answer.

Short Answer
Dry your weed slowly. That means leave it on the stick and hang it.

- If you can control it, your drying room (or cardboard box) RH should be between 55% and 65%, with the sweetspot at 60%RH.
- Keep temperatures between 68 and 69F for optimal drying.
- Keep air circulating above or/and below your hanging branches with a fan or two. NEVER have the fans blow directly on your branches. You don't need a hurricane, but that air has to keep moving.
If you have a lot to dry in a garage, skip this and go to the Long Answer.

1. Cut the branches off and hang them for 5 days. Don't remove the fan leaves.

2. At day 5, trim your buds on the branches. Remove the fan and sugar leaves. You shouldn't need to do much more trimming after this.

3. At day 10, your buds should be ready to be trimmed/cut off the branches. You may need to pretty up the buds at this time. Personally, I don't bother. They're not for sale, they're for me.

4. Put them in jars and burp once a day for 3 full weeks. Throw in a hygrometer so you can see the RH inside the jar. You won't get trichome and terpene stability before 3 weeks. You can sample all you want, but play the long game with your stash and go the full 3 weeks.

5. If your RH rises ABOVE 62%, keep your jars open for an extra 15 minutes per burp for a few days. Look for stability between 55% and 62%RH. I like it closer to 57% because at 62%, it gums up my grinder. Perfect RH target for long term storage is 62%, and 57% for short term. But this is a matter of personal preference.

Once you've cured your bud, fill and use a baby food size jar for your daily smoke. Constantly opening a big jar a few times a day, although fun, will eventually dry out your cured bud.

Long Answer
There a lot of setup and equipment in the Long Answer, so I'll just put up the link. The guide is meant for people with a larger harvest than most home growers.
Drying and Curing Guide

Reading the guide, while maybe too long for here, isn't that long a read. It's to the point with no fluff, so you might get some insights by reading it even if you only grow a bit.

I've had days where I was burping 100 jars, forgetting to close the jars before bed, leaving for the weekend without burping (*very risky), and even just forgetting to burp them (also dangerous). So I automate it now. I can leave for the lake and come back in 2 weeks without worrying. Another thing I hated about burping Mason Jars is that my hand doesn't fit in them and the buds always get stuck so I have to use a spoon or something stupid to get the buds out. So I use food safe jars with a 5 inch lid.

Hope this helps.

Ok so you know Im kindo stupid considering the last shit on “how to post a diary”. 😂😂 I am
gonna say “burping” is opening the lid for a few seconds and shaking the flower a bit then resealing? Also where can I get one of those humidity checker things cheap? So After 5 weeks when this process is complete can I vacuum pack them in Mason Jars and store them?
and last question I have been wondering is there anything the roots and such can be used for after I chop down the plant for harvest?

Ok i got 5 mins to spare. My dumb ass signed up for double duty when i married my wife 4yrs ago today lol. So ill put this in common men terms for im not a chemist ,but smoking with one is TRIPPY to say the least .

HE ASSURED ME YES, SUBLIMATION IS A NEAT PROCESS of curing any veggies or certain fruit.

He also said Yeah im rupturing trichs BUT, im also altering the chemical process with thc/cbd. He advised me that trying sublimation THEN, doing traditional curing ie. Jars, burping. Would excel scents and make it more robust . He said a lot, but that's what i got directly. He's a chemist for Raytheon, dude's really TRIPPY older Caucasian very cool dude . Ill talk witem again next week. Sorry for the rushing eating a lot of kat today ! Lmfao
Respect. I'll be on later fellas !

lol

1 small hygrometer.
You can get a cheap one at a hardware store. Maybe even the dollar store. Get one from Amazon. But don't be cheap and get a Caliber 4R hygrometer ($25) because the cheap ones can be off by 5%. So when you think your weed is 62, it could be 67 and molding.

After 5 weeks
Yup. I vacuum pack them in bags and drop them in the freezer. But in a cool place is fine for several months.

Roots
I read about some hippies boiling the roots for tea. I don't know what you can get out of it, but can't hurt. Personally, I like a nice 5 star Orange Pekoe tea.

i was curious as to what would be some methods for curing. so far i let em hang for about 4 days then depending on how moist i will throw em in jars and start burping them every 12- 15 hours or so. im finding that iim loosing a lot of the smells and the nug turns out "crispy" dried rather than a desirable cured dry, if that makes sense. Also should i be trimming all leaf off before i hang it or hang it with just the sugar leaves on it still? any tips or tricks that could help me?? thanks for looking

Best way to dry Is in is in 60° temp and 60% humidity. Mine take about 12-14 days. You don't want to start putting them in the jars when they're still wet or you'll get bad bacteria in there that smells really vinegary and pretty much ruins it. You don't want any airflow directly hitting the buds, I do mine over the top just to move the air around a little bit but not too much. The rule of thumb is 6060
