Every soil grow can benefit from stepping up the mulch and companion crop game. I feel like these two things are time-tested, simple ways to exponentially improve your grow, and they're no-brainers, so you can't screw it up.
The mulch creates a fantastic barrier from frying your soil, and from all the exposed rotting garbage in your soil that attracts pests; it also retains and better distributes moisture (which prevents over AND under watering), and breaks down over time, feeding all the micro-beasties in the soil. Don't use cedar, or walnut, or your compost. The companion crops have different benefits, depending on what you choose, but will keep all the superhero insects around, assist the microbes in breaking down the nutes in the soil for the girls, and make for great mulch for future crops. It's a great way to make the living soil just get better and better, especially with a no-till method. I plan on using the borage companion crop and all the hemp stalk fiber from this year's outdoor harvest as my mulch for my indoor grows I'll be starting up. Win--win!!
