I felt I should pipe in at 70 with a shaky old voice, long grey beard, bald on the top, long hair that's bent at the hips leaning on his cane that has 5 great grand kids 4 grand kids and talk to you younguns about what getting old is all about...........but I forgot what I was going to say.....😁
Three Kids, Nine Grandkids and Three Great Grandkids. Only going on 62 but feel 92.

You are like a real life cartoon - a little Dennis the Menace, a helping of Calvin, maybe a touch of pointy hair boss from Dilbert. I follow you around just for the chuckles.

I'm what they refer to as an elder millennial lol... still grew up before the time of widespread internet use, social media and cell phones... but I identify as an old lady, and refer to myself as a swamp witch, a term of endearment that my husband coined and I now enjoy because it's kind of true lol. I'm always playing in the dirt, my river or off adventuring somewhere. My mom always said I was an old soul. 🤷‍♀️ I grew up in the mountains/woods as an only child so nature is my jam. My dad still lives in my childhood home and he just got high-speed internet and cable last year when they decided there was finally enough people living on his road to warrant the cost of installing fiber optic cable. I grew up with 3 channels on TV and was told to go play outside more times than I can count, never even had a video game system till I bought my own PS2 as a young adult. Trying to instill some of those same experiences in my boy, get outside and play dammit! He does, already loves camping and a good hike as long as it's not too hard for his little legs... though I just saw an article about a 6 year old that became an Adirondack 46er, (which for folks outside of NY, that's someone that has climbed all 46 Adirondack High peaks, and a high peak is over 4000 feet in elevation)
so he better step up his game lol.

Alright, alright, I hearby grant you special Gen-X status with us. Your childhood sounds like mine. You are accepted into the proper generation.

@Shaded_One shall not pass.

My mom.was old school, had me in her 40s, she was born in 1944, so that helps too lol. All this time I've been picturing @Shaded_One as a slightly varied version of Gandalf, which is cool cause I love the lord of the rings, actually reading The Hobbit to my boy right now... I feel duped 🤣

I actually saw him in one of his videos a while back, so I knew he was not worthy like us for a while. All young and in shape. Ridiculous.

Here is the way I use brix. (I'm new to this too, love to hear other ideas)

Find a fan leaf that is in direct sun that is sorta average for the overall plant. Not the highest, not the lowest.
Snip it including the petiole and smash it to get the sap out. I use a $2 garlic press. ($47 for anyone who carves pipes.)
Put a drop of sap on the meter, close the lid, make sure the whole glass gets wet when you close it. Does not take much, but if you don't get enough on there wipe off and try again.
Look thru it. You will see a line - basically 2 colors. Where the color changes, read the number, that's your brix. If you have ever used a refractometer to measure salinity in a saltwater aquarium - its the same kinda thing.

Interpretation:

The higher the better. Try for double digits.

Lets say you are at 6. You could try something, wait a couple days, remeasure, and make an interpretation as to the effect your change had on the ability for the plant to make sugar.

Example - Brix is at 6. Lower your lights 6". Brix goes to 7 - good job. Brix goes to 5 - too much light. Can do the same thing with say Nitrogen, PH, foliar sprays, whatever.

When it comes to photosynthesis, the plant will go full bore until it meets a limitation. Could be light, CO2, well, you know how to grow I don't need to spell it all out.

You can use this data to understand what your limiting factor(s) are.

You can also use it to detect your light penetration. Use it to determine if lower vegetation is helping or not. If your top leaves in the sun are double digits, and the lower leaves are 2, they are not really helping you. If they are blocking air movement, causing your RH to go up, whatever, you can cut them off knowing they weren't doing anything good anyhow.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say lots of the growers on this thread can intuit what is going on with the plant without needing hard data. Definately not necessary for everyone. But if you are in there trimming fan leaves anyhow, why not do a gut check as to what is going on with the plant? It's only $19 unless you live in siberia, in which case screw you in particular, gimme $36.
Pointy hair....lol 30 years ago maybe, on top anyways,,,still points down my back a foot.
Thanks for that description on how to use the Brix thingy.....I've a friend that I was hoping would help me out with it but he seems to have flown the coop.

I could use that info now, i'm still getting used to the led and messing with the intensity. I've been looking at the leaves...pointing down too strong..... pointing up too weak....laying flat just right but it would be nice to confirm my suspicions with a tool I don't need......

Oh don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good baked binge watching sesh as much as the next cat. Maybe smash some edibles and lose several hours of my life playing The Witcher 3 or some other RPG... but I usually don't even touch my PS4 till the winter months... speaking of which, might go slay some monsters tonight lol.

So, popping in to catch up on the days events and have spent 15 mins laughing! I have two grand babies, one is 21 and the other 15. Most say I don’t look like a granny, but it’s usually at the range and they know I shoot well! 😂
All I can say is work hard and retire early! Those “golden years” are metallic years for sure, silver in my hair gold in my teeth and lead in my a**.

I'm hooked on No Man's Sky. Been playing it on my PC since winter set in. At 56, I'm easily entertained.

Hey wait I’m in that 35 year old range haha jk, i ways tend to gravitate to people older than me so that works fine for me haha, I love learning new thing from old ways if ya all know what I mean, sometimes I think we way overthink these great plants, so great to see what they can do though when you dial in every aspect of their environment and neutrient intake what they can really do

While it’s on my mind.. I got two new veg lights for Christmas. They are fantastic! Spider Farmer SF600. My fav thing about them at this point is being able to drop them within 4-6” of my seedlings. Allows me to control the height vs. the light space required having control of that. Lightweight about three and some change pounds per light. Around eight inches wide by four feet long. Runs nice and cool. Covers a two by four area.
I have a small area that I pop my seeds, clone and veg my plants. This has helped me greatly. I would not recommend it as a bloom light tho.

Hek yea i have been looking into 2x4 lights as well, such a cool dimension for clones or even a quick full run. Nice light, Spider farmer makes legit lights, no complaints here on em. 🤙
