I never cultivated the shrooms, I went out and collected them.
Are you making rso right now ?
I have made shatter with moonshine. But I am planning to make capsules with coco-keef oil and other kinds of edibles

I'm green and clean 14 years now. Cannabis saved my life. I kicked a heavy opiate habit. The Dr's got me hooked in the 90s. Then when the pain clinic dropped me for cannabis I hit the streets. It was all down hill from there. I found a group up in Maine called Green and clean. I detoxed using cannabis and psilocybin. I worked a 12 step program but use cannabis to manage chronic pain. Once I detoxed I haven't looked back. Sure it gets challenging every now and then. When that happens I reach out to my support group. Kinda like having a couple sponsors. I have found there's a lot of us out there. I no longer hide my sobriety. Its my hope that my story will help someone who is still struggling. I do meet a ton of resistance when I explaine green and clean to regular 12 step people. I have to explain that I suffer from chronic pain and I won't live my life in pain. So instead of taking dangerous pharmaceutical He'll even motrin can cause blood clots and kidney failure. So I micodose medibles for pain. They are all in or nothing. I have been told I Jeopardize peoples sobriety by preaching green and clean. But it works for me. If I can help someone down the road then that's awesome to.
Hello from Maine. We do a few things right, glad you are clean and there are many paths to the same destination.

The thing about shatter is that no matter how low quality you put in you extract a very potent concentrate that apparently is suitable for edibles, vape carts etc etc. But I heard that weed ans hash dont work if you only shatter

I'm in the same boat brother I had a fat outdoor garden back in 2010 that was my last time growing still living at Mom's house and then I've got became strung out and homeless for 10 years+..

Was out on the east coast in the South traveling by freight train in ODing and just getting drunk everywhere.. ended up in slab City in southern California 2 years ago where I met my now wife and got clean completely. When the unemployment hit I was smart and used all of my back pay to buy a half acre of property here in Berry Creek California which is about an hour and a half south of where I grew up in Redding so it's similar outdoor environment to what I'm used to.

trying to pick up where I left off I was learning how to breathe in 2010 and cross purple elephant in lavender and purple elephant and satori,

Along with lime Trainwreck and hash plant ..

Including some pics and here's a link to that last grows online journal on invalid.com..

now just trying to breed an ultimate version of train wreck that does good outdoors it could support itself it doesn't follow all over the place but hopefully still has that taste.. looking for anything related to those old school funk flavours.. romulan, gooey, cat piss, shiva skunk, hash plant, jack herer.. the list goes on and on but basically I'm not a fan of the modern dessert fat and strains..

Hellablaked: awesome plants and pictures. Thanks for the story:) was slab city a good place to be ?

Ems : I am not surprised that lsd did not work for you. It have not worked that way for me either, its not a plant medicine in the same way as psilocybin. Of course it does things but it is more of a visual character than an emotional thing..that the mushrooms do.
slab City was awesome that's where I met my wife I was working on the DIY skate park there since no one there skateboarded and I don't even really skate anymore but I grew up skateboarding is one of the things that helped me a lot as a youngster so I wanted to make sure that the kids living there had somewhere safe to go play and that's how I met my wife while I was building a skatepark ...

on the topic of the mushrooms, that's actually what I've gotten into lately. trying to grow them on a major scale
if any of y'all want to try growing them I got a bunch of differenttypes of cultures on agar and liquid culture of Cubensis myycelium
I'll be down to trade for some beans or some cuts or something or maybe even just for a few doll hairs but I'd be able to help walk you guys through the growing process

Very nice, ah the cubensis. Its a nice trip compared to p. Semilanceata the latter tends to be a bit more rough in the edges trip wise.
Nice hearing about SC and good of you to contribute to the communty.

Ems : eveything needs to be sterile. If you practice good hygiene you are on the right way. I have not done it myself so should not speak for the easy part.
I remember the first time I tried cubensis. A friend handed me a big glass that was 1/4 full and Said this is one dose. I ate it and a little while later i was having fractals and laughing my ass off.
The first time with semilanceata was more dark and more in ya face. I have a lot of respect for those things. I did not always have that.

Cubensis is a nicer introduction to mushrooms than Semilanceata i think.

Psilocybin really made me appreciate myself in a way i did not before and I found that healing. Also a strong sense of my place..between the sky and the earth. Sounds trippy and cryptic but those things lack words for explaining. At least for me :)
Its a good exercise in letting go of things.

Its not an end all cure i think. I think its a powerful tool that allows us to seek within, to view things in a new light/perspective and it may or may not provide you with the solution to your struggles. It helped me out of depression. Its a lot to take in and its a challenge to remember the divine messages and bring them to your life afterwards.

It might help you deal with things and overcome. I cant guarantee anything

I think you have a chance of gaining insight which may help you. You may need to experiment. I cant recommend dosages or anything for you because I am only an amateur:)

There is a difference on therapeutic doses, Micro dosing and high level tripping

For those of you who have watched the documentary "Run from the Cure", this should answer any questions about producing your own oil. I recommend that people grow their own hemp either in a small indoor grow system or outdoors. Growing it yourself will eliminate the high cost associated with buying hemp from drug dealers. The cost of hemp can vary greatly from dealer to dealer and so can the quality of the hemp. For anyone new to growing hemp a good book or video on the subject is a necessity. If you go to Cannabis Culture, the good people there should be able to point you in the right direction.

Caution:
Oils that drug dealers sell can have many contaminants and often little or no THC. From my experience, most hemp oil available on the street should be avoided for medicinal use. Make your own oil or have someone you trust produce the oil to assure a very pure, high quality oil is produced.

How much to make and take?
One pound (500g) of bone-dry hemp buds will usually produce about 2 ounces (55 - 60 mL) of high-grade oil. This amount of oil will cure most serious cancers; the average person can ingest this amount in about three months. This oil is very potent so one must begin treatment with small doses. A drop of oil about half the size of a grain of rice, two to four times a day is a good beginning. After four or five days, start increasing your daily dosage very gradually. As time goes on the body builds a tolerance to the oil and more and more can be taken. In cases where people are in a great deal of pain, I recommend that their dosage be quickly increased until it kills the pain. High quality hemp oil will stop pain even when morphine is not effective. The oil can be applied to external injuries for pain relief in minutes.

Will I get high?
Following the dosage previously described, many people can take the full treatment and never get high. In regards to hemp, getting "high" is a joke, even if a person does take too much oil the effect wears off quickly and no harm is done. No one has ever died from the use of hemp medicine.

Will I become addicted?
Hemp oil does not cause your body to crave more. It is non-addictive, harmless and effective for practically any medical condition.

Is this the same as hemp seed oil?
No! This is hemp oil, made from the bud and small leaves of the hemp plant. It is the essential oil of the hemp plant. Health food store sells oil made from hemp seed that is often mislabeled as hemp oil. Although seed oil is very beneficial, it does not contain enough THC to have any effect on cancer and other serious illnesses.

Are hemp and marijuana the same?
The word marijuana is one of over four hundred slang terms used worldwide to describe the cannabis and/or hemp plant.

Are all hemp plants the same?
When buying or growing hemp, procure a strain that has the highest possible THC content. To energize someone suffering from depression, I recommend a good Sativa strain. For most other medical conditions, I strongly suggest that Indica strains be used. Indicas relax a person and provide them with more rest and sleep.

How do I use it?
High quality hemp oil can be vapourized, ingested or used topically. Add the oil to creams and salves for external use.

Where can I get information about making the oil?
For someone new to making the oil I suggest that you go to "Run From The Cure". There you can watch our documentary in seven segments. Segment #4 shows how the oil can be produced at home or one can go to Phoenix Tears Movie and download the full documentary. You will need a high-speed internet connection and there is no charge. The process in the video could only be described as crude at best, but the oil that is produced will cure cancer. In reality, this medicine should be produced in a controlled environment, using distilling equipment, etc. to reclaim the solvent and to purify the oil. Most people do not understand distilling and do not have access to the required equipment. This is the reason such a simple method is descried in the documentary, so if need be just about anyone can produce the oil. As in the video, again we stress that this process, if not done properly can be dangerous and we bear no responsibility if this educational information is misused.

My process:
Starting material:
I generally work with a pound or more of good grade hemp starting material. You can use just one ounce. An ounce will usually produce 3 or 4 grams of oil. The amount of oil produced per ounce of hemp will vary from strain to strain, but it all has that wonderful healing power.
1 - Place the completely dry starting material in a plastic bucket.
2 - Dampen the material with the solvent you are using. Many solvents can be used. I like to use pure naphtha but it costs $500 for a 45-gallon drum. You can use 99% isopropyl alcohol, which you can find in your local drug stores. Alcohol absorbs more chlorophyll from the plant material than naphtha does. This gives oils made with alcohol a darker colour but does not diminish the potency of the oil to any noticeable degree. Ether, naphtha or butane and many other solvents can produce oils that are amber and transparent. Granted these clear oils do look better but dark oil can be just as potent. If the process is done properly, little or no solvent residue is left in the oil. I have been consuming oils produced using different solvents for eight years with no harmful effects. You will require about two gallons of solvent to strip the THC off one pound of dry starting material. 500 milliliters of solvent should be more than enough to strip the THC from one ounce of hemp starting material.
3 - Crush the plant material using a stick of clean untreated (chemical free) wood or some such device. Even though the starting material has been dampened with the solvent, you will find that the material can be readily crushed.
4 - Add solvent until the starting material is completely covered.
Use the stick to work the plant material. As you are doing this, the THC dissolves off the plant material into the solvent.
5 - Continue this process for about 3 minutes.
6 - Pour the solvent-oil mix off the plant material into another bucket. You have just stripped the plant material of about 80% of its THC.
7 - Second wash - again add solvent to the plant material and work it for another 3 minutes to get the other 20%.
8 - Pour this solvent-oil mix into the bucket containing the first mix that was poured off previously.
9 - Discard the twice-washed plant material.
10- Pour the solvent-oil mix through a coffee filter into a clean container.
11- Boil the solvent off. I have found that a rice cooker will do this boil off very nicely. The one I have has two heat settings - high and low - and will hold over a half gallon (2.5 liters) of solvent-oil mix.
12- Add solvent-oil mix to the rice cooker until it is about Ā¾ full.
Make sure you are in a very well ventilated area and set up a fan to carry the solvent fumes away. The fumes are very flammable. Be sure to stay away from red-hot elements, sparks, cigarettes etc. that could ignite the fumes.

13- Plug the rice cooker in and set it on high heat.
14- Continue adding solvent-oil mix as the level in the rice cooker decreases until it is all in the cooker.
15- Add a few drops of water to the solvent-oil mix as the level comes down for the last time. The amount of water added depends on how much starting material you had in the beginning. If I am producing oil from a pound of good bud, I usually add about ten drops of water.
16- When there is about one inch of solvent-oil-water mix left in the cooker, put on your oven mitts, pick the unit up and gently swirl the contents
17- Continue swirling until the solvent has been evaporated off. The few drops of water help release the solvent residue and protect the oil somewhat from too much heat. When the solvent has been boiled off, the cooker that I use automatically goes to low heat. This avoids any danger of overheating the oil. At no time should the temperature of the oil go over 290F degrees (140 C).
18- Put on your oven mitts and remove the pot containing the oil from the rice cooker.
19- Gently pour the oil into a small stainless steel container.
20- Place this container in a dehydrator or put in on a gentle heating device such as a coffee warmer. It may take a few hours but the water and volatile turpines will be evaporated from the oil. When there is no longer any activity on the surface of the oil the medicine is ready for use.
21- Pour the hot oil into a bottle; or as in the video suck it up into a plastic syringe. Putting the oil in a plastic syringe makes it very easy to dispense the medicine.

When the oil cools off it has the consistency of thick grease. Some strains will produce very thick oil and you may have trouble squeezing it out of the syringe. If this happens, place the syringe in warm water a few minutes prior to use.

To anyone starting to use hemp oil as a medication, here are some simple facts.

Hemp oil will lower blood pressure and if you are on blood pressure medication, you may find that this medication is no longer needed. The same is true for diabetics. I have seen hemp oil control blood sugar to the extent that insulin was no longer needed.

I am not a doctor and I do not have the right to tell people what they should do. Personally, I would not consider taking any cancer treatments currently in use by our medical system, I do not recommend that hemp oil be taken along with chemotherapy. What would be the sense of making your own cure and then allowing the medical system to give you massive doses of poison?

From my experience with hemp medicine, I have found that most pharmaceutical medications are no longer needed once a person starts using hemp oil. Hemp oil seems to mix well with most natural medications but I have had a few reports from people trying to take hemp oil and pharmaceuticals who experienced stomach pain etc. All problems ceased when they stopped taking the prescription drugs.

To anyone who is going to act on this information to help a loved one, I welcome you to the world of real medicine. Again, I caution you to be very careful when boiling the solvent off. The fumes are very flammable. Be sure to stay away from red-hot elements, sparks, cigarettes etc. that could ignite the fumes.

I wish you the best luck and health.

Warmest regards,
Rick Simpson.

Hi THCFarmer Forum fam,

My name is Nancy and I'm part of the customer happiness team at The Press Club, a small family owned premium solventless company located in sunny California!

What is solventless you might ask? Well, that's why I'm here!

THCFarmer Cannabis Cultivation Network has officially partnered with The Press Club to bring you the latest in solventless to the amazing cannabis growing community here! We're here to educate and answer all questions (and hopefully inspire some growers to be rosin pressers too)!

Solventless is a cannabis concentrate that's created without using any chemicals or solvents. Using only heat from aluminum plates and pressure from an industrial press, you can instantly transform your trichomes into different forms of concentrates. Similar to wine-making when grapes are squeezed for their juice, trichomes are squeezed for their active cannabinoids and terpenes during rosin pressing. The final result is called rosin, a solventless concentrate that can be further refined or transformed into different forms and consistencies - from budder to THCA to shatter to everything in between.

After being introduced to rosin pressing in 2014, the founders at The Press Club fell in love with the solventless extraction process. One thing they didn't like was how expensive filter bags - also known as rosin bags - were for rosin pressing. Not only were they expensive, they weren't dependable - often tearing and ripping under pressure.

After 8,610 hours of research (we counted), 16 trips to nylon factories, 2 years of lab testing, 0 blowouts and 1 proprietary stitch, The Press Club was born.

Now The Press Club's mission is focused on pushing the cannabis industry forward, educating people about this wonderful plant and becoming a one-stop-shop for all premium solventless products from washing to rosin bags and accessories. All our filters are made with our proprietary pink stitching, making our bags 5x stronger than competitors, and all bags come with our Zero Blowout Guaranteeā„¢. We also donate 5% of every purchase to support American veterans and NORML.

In this "From Soil To Oil: How To Cultivate, Prep, and Process Cannabis for Solventless Extraction" guide we created specifically for THCFarmer Forums, Concentrates & Processing, we take you from seed to oil - explaining every aspect of the rosin pressing process from picking plant genetics to explaining what equipment is required to start your solventless journey.

Feel free to email the team at [email protected] if you have any questions! We're always here to help!

We also partnered with THCFarmer Cannabis Cultivation Network to give everyone here 10%-off any purchase with us (use code: THCFARMER at checkout).

INTRODUCTION: ROSIN 101

The best solventless extractions require the best cannabis for starting material. Whether itā€™s bubble hash, dry sift, or rosin, premium cannabis concentrates are derived from cannabis flowers of superior genetics grown in the ideal environment, and harvested at peak ripeness. The process of creating cannabis concentrates with solventless extraction methods (without the use of solvents like butane or CO2) amplifies the existing quality of the cannabis from which itā€™s derived. Solventless extraction isnā€™t magic, and it wonā€™t transform mediocre cannabis into a remarkable concentrate. The starting material directly determines the end product. Therefore, cultivating, harvesting, and preparing exceptional cannabis is key to making exceptional solventless extractions.

The two main categories of solventless cannabis extractions are rosin and hash. The two forms of hash include bubble hash and dry sift hash, both of which are composed mostly of trichome heads with very little plant material. Bubble hash is created using the ice water extraction method, while dry sift is created by sweeping dry cannabis material over a series of mesh screens.

Rosin can be made using flower, bubble, or dry sift as starting material, and the resulting rosin is known as either flower rosin, bubble hash rosin (or simply hash rosin), or sift rosin. Flower rosin is the fastest and most straightforward concentrate to produce, while hash rosin is generally considered the highest quality.

Making rosin begins with loading cannabis starting material inside nylon filter bags, pre-pressing it with an aluminum mold, enclosing it within a folded piece of parchment paper, and placing it between rosin press plates where heat and pressure can be applied (1). The press (2) gives us the right amount of pressure needed to extract rosin, while the heated plates provide high temperatures needed to liquefy the cannabis trichomes that contain all of the therapeutic compounds weā€™re aiming to extract. Several types of presses and rosin press plates are used in a variety of configurations, from hydraulic to pneumatic presses (8) with either caged or uncaged plate (9) set ups. Even a hair straightener will work for pressing rosin (3)! Weā€™ll outline the specific heat (4) and pressure (5) settings applied to each type of starting material in this overview.

Pre-press molds (6) are often used to compress the starting material inside the rosin filter bags before extraction. The loaded rosin bags (7) are placed inside a folded sheet of parchment paper, which catches and holds the rosin as itā€™s extracted between the heated press plates. The rosin is then collected from the parchment paper with a rosin stamp or dab tool.

PLANT GENETICS

The quality of cannabis starting material is the predominant influencer of the quality of solventless extract it will produce. Just as the quality of cannabis starting material determines the quality of solventless extractions, genetics play a critical role in the outcome of a cannabis grow (10). While there are other impactful variables such as garden environment, plant genetics are the foundation of a high quality harvest. Selecting genetics known for producing copious amounts of resin is a good starting point (11). Specifically, flowers with an abundance of capitate stalked trichomes are what weā€™re aiming to cultivate, and some cultivars (strains/genetics) tend to produce more than others. Choosing seeds or clones that contain these genetics is the first decision to make when planning your operation (12).

GROWING ENVIRONMENT

The right genetics can only express their most spectacular traits if given an optimum environment in which to flourish. Whether itā€™s an indoor or outdoor grow space, factors like light, temperature, humidity, and nutrients will determine the outcome of the harvest. The best genetics placed in a subpar growing environment will never live up to their potential. Thoughtful design and configuration, intentional selection of equipment, and meticulous attention to detail are components of a quality garden (13). At the same time, nature knows whatā€™s best (14). We are facilitating growth, not playing God. The idea is to create the best space for the cannabis plant to do its thing (15).

HARVEST AT PEAK RIPENESS

Good genetics placed in the ideal growing environment will produce resin-packed buds at harvest time. But how can you determine the best time to harvest your flowers? The answer lies in the trichomes (16). Those tiny translucent globes convey peak levels of ripeness based on their coloration, starting first as completely clear, then moving to milky and finally amber-colored (17). When the trichome heads are predominantly amber, this signals the peak of resin production and the height of therapeutic compounds within. Using a magnifier like a jewelerā€™s loupe is the best way to peer into the world of trichomes and gage maximum ripeness.

(16) Guide To Trichomes and Solventless Extraction
(17) How To Harvest Cannabis at Peak Trichome Ripeness

FLOWER ROSIN, SIFT ROSIN, OR BUBBLE HASH ROSIN?

Before harvest day itā€™s important to decide how you intend to use the flowers. Assuming that solventless extraction (18) is the goal, you have a few different options. Flower rosin can be produced using air dried flowers and requires less processing than dry sift or bubble hash rosin. If flower rosin is the aim, you simply need to harvest and dry the flowers, then press them using heated rosin press plates.

Flower rosin is a great option if youā€™re just getting started in rosin and want to learn the mechanics and general workflow, without having to first process the flowers into hash (19).

If hash rosin is your objective, the harvested flowers need to be processed into hash, which is either dry sift or bubble (bubble hash being the more pure of the two types of hash). Dry sift hash is made by sweeping dried, trichome-rich cannabis material over a set of mesh sieving screens, employing the force of gravity to separate trichomes from the rest of the material. Bubble hash involves a bit more complexity than dry sift, and is made using a process called ice water extraction. Ice water extraction uses cold water and a liquid vortex to separate trichomes from the remaining plant material.

Both flower rosin and dry sift rosin require dried cannabis flowers as starting material, so hanging cannabis to dry immediately after harvest is the way to go. Although dry sift hash needs to be made with dry cannabis material, bubble hash can be made with either dry or ā€œfresh frozenā€ cannabis. Fresh frozen cannabis refers to material thatā€™s been frozen immediately after harvest to preserve the best qualities of the living plant, such as terpene content. Fresh frozen material is only used in the production of bubble hash and bubble hash rosin.

Rosin filter bags hold the cannabis starting material and provide filtration while heat and pressure are applied in between the rosin press plates. As the rosin is squeezed from the material it passes through the filter bags before oozing out onto the parchment paper. Unwanted material is contained within the rosin bags, while pure rosin flows through (20).

FLOWER ROSIN

Drying Flowers for Flower Rosin

If pressing flower rosin is your objective, drying your freshly-harvested crop is the first step (21). Wet cannabis canā€™t be pressed into rosin, so hanging the flowers upside down to dry anywhere from several days up to two weeks will bring the material to the proper moisture level. In preparation for rosin production, cannabis flowers should maintain 60-65% relative humidity (RH). The best way to monitor moisture levels is with a digital hygrometer and a glass mason jar. Place the buds and a digital hygrometer within a sealed mason jar, and wait until the reading stabilizes. If the buds are showing RH over 65% then keep drying. If under 60%, you can rehydrate the material in preparation for rosin production (22).

Once the buds have achieved optimum moisture content, itā€™s time to prep them for rosin production (23). Selecting the correct rosin filter bags and setting the correct temperature and pressure outputs at your rosin press plates are the leading variables of the process (24). 90-120 micron rosin filter bags provide the ideal filtration power for pressing flower rosin (25). Whole buds should be broken up into smaller, popcorn-sized pieces by hand, not ground into a powder with a grinder. Regardless of the starting material youā€™re using, the rosin filter bag should be packed tightly to avoid empty spaces and large gaps within the material.

180-210 degrees Fahrenheit at 650-1000 PSI is the recommended range for pressing flower rosin (26). Note that pressure readings on your rosin press may not be the amount of pressure thatā€™s actually being applied to your starting material at the bag. Calculating Platen PSI for your specific set up will help ensure accuracy (27).

DRY SIFT ROSIN

Making Dry Sift Hash

Dry sift is a form of solventless cannabis concentrate that involves separating trichome heads from cannabis plant material and isolating them for collection using a set of mesh sieving screens (28). Resin-coated cannabis flower or trim leaf is whisked back and forth over a series of stackable screens composed of varying pore sizes. While plant material is contained on the upper screens, trichome heads are small enough to pass through for collection on the lower screens (29). Dry sift can be made using a steady, sweeping motion of your hands across the surface area of the screens, or with the help of a card (e.g. a credit card) to move and gently agitate the cannabis over the mesh filter. This technique is known as ā€œcardingā€.

Cleaning Dry Sift Hash with Static Tech

Trichome heads that collect on top of sifting screens are often intermingled with a noticeable amount of tiny plant particles that also made their way through the mesh filter. The most desirable hash contains trichome heads exclusively, without the presence of other plant material. Itā€™s difficult to remove plant material from dry sift hash, but it can be done with a technique known as Static Tech. There are various forms of static tech, but the basic principle involves the use of static electricity to separate trichomes from plant material in such a way that the trichomes can be collected and the remaining material can be discarded.

Pressing Sift Rosin

While dry sift can be consumed on its own, most extractors prefer to press dry sift into rosin. Hash rosin thatā€™s been pressed from dry sift is called sift rosin, and itā€™s generally considered a step up in quality from flower rosin.

As with pressing flower rosin, selecting the correct micron rosin filter bag plus temperature and pressure settings at the rosin press are the top variables to consider. Smaller micron rosin filter bags can accommodate dry sift, so 37-75 micron bags are generally suited for pressing sift, depending on the purity. In general, the more pure the source material youā€™re pressing, the smaller the micron size rosin bag you need. Double-bagging is also a good idea with pressing both sift and bubble hash rosin. The volume of rosin outflow from the sift and bubble hash is generally higher than that from flower rosin, and the additional reinforcement of a second bag helps to prevent blowouts. A larger micron such as 120 or 160 is often used as the outer bag, but the recommended 37-75 microns for sift will also work doubled-up. If using different microns, the larger micron should be on the outside.

140-200 degrees Fahrenheit with Platen PSI between 500-1500 are good ranges in which to experiment with sift rosin.

BUBBLE HASH ROSIN

Washing Bubble Hash

Bubble hash is the highest quality of hash, known as bubble hash because of the small bubbles that appear on the surface when exposed to heat (30). Bubble hash is rated on a scale of one to six stars, 6-star hash being the most pure and highest-quality. 5 and 6-star hash is also known as full melt hash, because it will fully burn away and leave no waxes or residuals behind on a nail or bowl when smoked.

Making bubble hash is often referred to as ā€œwashingā€ hash, and involves a process known as Ice Water Extraction (31). Cannabis material (either flowers or trichome-covered trim leaves) is mixed in a bucket with ice water, stirred together with a circular motion to create a vortex in the water. This vortex, coupled with the ice cold temperature of the water, allows the trichome heads to break away from their stalks (32). This slurry of ice water, plant material, and trichomes is then poured through a series of filter bags, also called Bubble Wash Bags, through which the trichomes heads are separated from the remaining material. While tap water is probably the most convenient water to obtain, itā€™s not the best. Use RO water when washing hash for the best results (33).

Each wash bag in the series contains a different size of filter screen, ranging in pore size from 220 to 25 microns (34). The filters which most closely match the size of full trichome heads will collect the highest grades of hash. Filters larger than trichomes catch and hold plant material that can be removed from the batch, while filters smaller than trichomes catch lesser-qualities of hash containing trichome stalks, broken heads, and tiny pieces of plant material.

After the ice hash water slurry is poured through the filters, the wash bags are removed from the work bucket one by one and gently scraped with a cold metal spoon for the hash thatā€™s collected on the screen. 120, 90, 75, and 50 micron wash bags usually collect the purest hash, composed almost exclusively of trichome heads with minimal contamination (35).

Drying Bubble Hash

Drying the hash thatā€™s collected from the wash bags is a critical step that can make or break the entire process (36). Wet hash invites microbial growth like mold, which will completely ruin the product, rendering it unusable. As the wet hash is scraped from the filter screens, the trichome heads stick together in an amorphous glob, somewhat resembling a loose and extremely wet pancake batter. This patty of hash can be dried using various methods, the most effective of which is freeze drying.

Freeze drying utilizes the process of sublimation coupled with a vacuum chamber to quickly and thoroughly dry the hash with minimal exposure to oxygen (37). Freeze dryers are advanced pieces of equipment that are often used by commercial processors. The cost of freeze dryers can be prohibitive to in-home extractors and casual hobbyists. It just depends on your budget!

Air drying hash is a fine alternative to freeze drying. To air dry hash, immediately freeze the wet hash patty for 24 hours, or until itā€™s frozen into a solid block. Then take the frozen blob of hash and rub it back and forth across a kitchen sieve or strainer, which breaks the hash into smaller pieces. The resulting is a coarse powder or sand-like consistency in the hash, allowing it to dry out evenly. Without breaking the hash down into smaller pieces like this, moisture will get stuck inside the middle of the hash patty and harbor microbial growth.

Sieve the wet hash over a piece of cardboard lined with parchment paper, and allow it to air dry in a cool, dry, dark space, or inside a refrigerator, until itā€™s completely dry to the touch. This can take a week or more. Squeeze a piece of the hash and feel for any moisture on your fingertips. When no moisture is present, the bubble hash is ready to go.

Pressing Bubble Hash Rosin

3 and 4-star hash is ideal for pressing into rosin. 1 and 2-star is better suited for edibles, and 5 and 5-star can be dabbed as it is (38).

25-37 microns is the recommended filter size for rosin bags when pressing bubble hash. Bubble hash is loaded into the rosin bags the same way as sift and flower, packed tightly to eliminate empty pockets within the material, but not so tightly that rosin cannot flow out from the center. It should feel dense and very compressed when squeezed between the fingers. For both flower, sift, and bubble hash, pre-press molds help to further compact and prime the material for extraction.

As with dry sift, double-bagging for bubble hash is helpful in preventing blowouts due to the high volume of rosin that flows quickly from the hash under heat and pressure. A larger micron such as 120 or 160 is often used as the outer bag, but the recommended 25-37 microns for sift will also work doubled-up. If using different microns, the larger micron should be on the outside.

160-190 degrees Fahrenheit with Platen PSI between 350-750 are good ranges in which to experiment with bubble hash rosin. And with any type of rosin extraction, be sure to start with a lower PSI and gradually increase to full pressure over time (39).

CURING ROSIN

Rosin is ready to consume immediately after production, but a curing process can help enhance the flavor and stabilize consistency. Curing rosin involves the use of an airtight glass jar, such as a mason jar. This approach to curing rosin is known as Jar Tech, and there are two types of Jar Tech (40): Warm Curing and Cold Curing (41).

Warm Curing involves exposing the rosin to temperatures anywhere between 90 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit (42). This can be accomplished in an oven, or even with a heating mat similar to what is used for warming cannabis cuttings.

Cold curing is often done at cool room temperatures, in the 60-degree Fahrenheit range (43). Cold curing often preserves more of the volatile terpenes in rosin than warm curing. With both types of curing, keeping the lid sealed for the duration prevents terpenes from evaporating into the air.

The lid can be ā€œburpedā€ intermittently during the cure, and some extractors like to ā€œwhipā€ the rosin as well. Terpenes often separate out naturally during the cure, and whipping helps to reintegrate the liquid terpenes back into the rosin.

STORING ROSIN

Rosin can be stored for many months in glass containers with an airtight seal (45). Using glass to store rosin is key, since glass doesnā€™t interact with terpenes in the way that plastic or silicone does. Both plastic and silicone as susceptible flake away and leach into the rosin over time, as terpenes are actually a natural form of solvents. To preserve the natural state of the rosin, be sure to only store it in glass for the long term.

Store rosin in a cool, dark, and dry environment. If storing in the refrigerator or freezer, be sure to allow the jar to come to room temperature when removing for use first before cracking open the lid. And wipe away any condensation that forms inside the glass, in order to prevent moisture from getting into the rosin. Bubble hash and sift can be stored following these same principles. Bubble Hash can also be heated and rolled into a Temple Ball (46) for long term storage and aging (47).

CONSUMING ROSIN

Rosin is most commonly dabbed with a dab rig and heated nail or bowl (48). To optimize for the most flavorful smoke, use lower temperatures at the nail. If you prefer the ease and convenience of vape pens, rosin can be used to make vape cartridges. This requires extra steps to decrease the viscosity of rosin, but it can be done (49).

Rosin can also be used for making edibles or other infusions, like MCT Oil capsules. You can even add rosin to joints for enhanced flavor and potency (50).

CONCLUSION

Unlike cannabis concentrates that utilize solvents for production (e.g. CO2 in closed-loop systems), solventless extracts like bubble hash and rosin are safe and easy to produce right from home, with minimal investment in equipment and starting material. Growing your own cannabis allows you to produce quality starting material and is often the most economical way to create a steady flow of top shelf cannabis concentrates. Solventless concentrates capture the essence of the plants from which theyā€™re produced, delivering a pure, potent, and flavorful experience.

Getting started is the hardest part. Once you start gaining some hands-on experience, youā€™ll quickly learn as you go and improve your process and your results. Take good notes along the way, learning from both your successes and so-called failures (51).

Mostly skimmed through this thread but just wanted to say a couple things, starting with congratulations on taking a charge. Opiate dependency physical and or mental is something that never truly goes away. I was in a very bad car wreck got over-prescribed which admittedly I liked having already been dabbling in the field quite a long time, seemed like my consolation prize. Terrible series unfolded years of hardship. Marijuana did help and I would note cultivation can be incredibly therapeutic. I noticed a picture of some hemp seeds, thatā€™s not going to help. Without a license for hemp youā€™re still breaking the law just in a different way. While I donā€™t condone breaking the law, if itā€™s going to occur either way, might as well be worth it in my opinion.
Seedsman is a good US option. Herbies is a good US option but is based in Spain takes 20 days to receive and tracking is often frustratingly wonky but the seeds are good and the company will make amends if anything isnā€™t viable - no germination. OregeonEliteSeeds is good for autoflower seeds, shipping is expensive but very fast - 2FastBudz company orange sherbet, Bruce banner, strawberry banana, are three high yield strains get 5 seeds Approx $60 assume 2-3 ounces per plant per 80-105 days from start to finish. Since thatā€™s average yield for many growers anyway, itā€™s not a bad route to travel as long as you take a few precautions. 20 or 24 hours light 0 or 4 hours dark from start to finish is best. Start in a 3 or 5 gallon pot, no larger and no smaller.
If thereā€™s anything Iā€™ve learned after spending a lot of money over the years trying to buy in cash and secrecy, no one cares. Iā€™ve seen countless people buy seeds online with their bank card, buy equipment online with the same bank card, and then grow for years on a small-medium scale with no one ever bothering them. Thatā€™s in a strict state that only became legal in the last couple years.
I would also note that while doctors often will not allow marijuana use whilst on subutex/suboxone, the combination is reasonably potent in regard to treatment of pain. Subutex, ibuprofen 800mg, low doses of marijuana. Donā€™t worry about CBD. Yes you could grow one hemp plant extract the CBD then extract THC from a regular plant and blend them 2:1 ratio in a vaping cartridge for additional ā€œpain reliefā€ but I find that CBD barely works if THC and THCX arenā€™t available to create synergy, Iā€™ve never noticed a difference in pain levels when consuming dispensary grade 2:1 cartridges 350mg THC 150mg CBD blended of 90% extracts versus say a live resin cartridge 89% thc .000% CBD .0762% CBN.
So stick to feminized seeds or autoflowering seeds, try to research highest yielding strains in relation to potency and I recommend aiming for heavy indicas. Most former and current opiate addicts/users suffer from anxieties and sativa heavy strains tend to activate that effect. An 80% indica is going to relax you, relieve stress and pain, calm one for meal time, television time, bed time in that order lol. Hybrids are fine but like I said always try to lean indica until you know for sure what you like. Iā€™ve met countless opiate users former and active, always always always want indicas once they are Truly aware of the differences. Further the average sativa dominant will yield less and grow taller while an indica dominant right next to it will be much more bushy and shorter but typically yield significantly more.
Best of luck in your endeavors, donā€™t forget to buy a carbon filter slap her on the back of your in-line fan assuming youā€™re running HPS bulbs in a vented hood. Even if itā€™s a cheap viviosun Brand combo deal itā€™s better than nothing to minimize letā€™s call it ā€œneighborhood notorietyā€ haha. You do not want to be the guy that everyone slows down in front of your house because the smell of marijuana is drifting into the street like a family of skunks weā€™re just run over.
I would say on a final note, hobbies to fill up your time that are constructive/productive are a very smart route to travel. I donā€™t care if that hobby is watching HBO series and then having intimate in depth review and discussion online. Anything that isnā€™t using narcotics and consorting with people whom use narcotics. If they arenā€™t fully committed to sub use or no drugs, they shouldnā€™t be around you. That includes xanax benzos (fake xanax) and whatever else kids/adults/people of all walks of life are getting hooked on these days.
Best of luck!
