Try shooting 80 foot casts to daisy chaining tarpon in 3' of gin-clear water. It does something to your head watching 100#+ fish turning on your fly. And it does something to your shoulder hucking 6" flies with a 12wt rod.....like throwing a wet sock back and forth. Youd be amazed at how close you can put your fly with a little bit of practice. I just go out to the park and practice shooting line and putting it in the same place everytime. Its all about muscle memory with fly casting

Was a perfect day for a 3 wt the other day, no wind bright sun and unfortunately no bugs and couldn't bring a fish up with anything I tried. Cannarado and C-Man are saying is exactly why fly fishing is a joy in itself. When I'm stoned and working a river with my rod there is a satisfaction like no other. Catching fish just caps off the buzz.

There were no fish rising so I just started showing off casting a dry about 60 to 70 ft and having the fly land gently on the water, just like a may fly landing to lay it's eggs. Fly fishing is an art and the more of a student you are the more you learn. In 30 some years I have yet to have mastered every technique. As I have gotten older I have gotten better at tying flies than fishing.

I'd love to learn how to tie my own flies. I tried it in an outdoor skills class in jr. high school, but since I didn't have any of the kit, it didn't stick with me.

Most people don't have the time or patience to learn how to use a fly rod or tie their own flies. It was and still is therapy for me. I could put the problems of the world behind me with a rod in my hand or a hook in a vice. I like being alone most of the time and fishing, tying and hiking are perfect partners.

That describes exactly how I've become with >clay< since my son passed and I found I needed >more< than just the weed and the head-shrinking....

Tending my garden and spending time outside with my dogs do the same for me. My professional life over the last year has been horribly stressful, and has had a terrible impact on my general health & well being. Pouring myself into my garden proved not only an amazing escape but a very fruitful and productive one as well.

When we were kids we snuck into Cyrstal Springs Resovoir a state game refuge in the SF Bay Area. We were up all nite drinking and decided to do some peyote hop the fence and fish. Previous trips were incredable Rainbows 10 lbs..Fish on every cast
As soon as we hopped the fence at dawn the ranger on patrol started searching for us. We just hunkered down and did not move, we had camoflouge, rods and backpacs loaded with beer. He was ordering us to surrrender we just stayed put as he walked within 5 feet of us. We made it back to the fence shortly after sunrise and made it out puked up from the peyote, hid out for several hours riding out the peyote, drank a few beers, hours later started hiking along the road and he stopped us for questioning, of course we denied. Back then the penelty was 6 months $10,000 fine as its watershed for San Francisco. Nowa days with the terror bullshit problay shoot ya...

Anyone got any recommendations for fun things in Estes? Got my 3 day license yesterday to try and catch some trout, but haven't had any luck down on the river yet.

Dude! The whole town is one long tourist trap, from one end of the main drag to the other, lol. Fish anywhere you like- even in the city limits- plenty of good things to eat, there's the Tram (not sure if it's open yet)... just walk around, I'm sure you'll find plenty of interesting things. It's a bit early in the season yet, but I know for a fact there's plenty still going on.

Don't forget Rocky Mountain National Park. It just opened all the way to Grand Lake. Take the whole day to fish, watch tons of wild life and see some majestic mountains scenery. Have lunch in Grand Lake and spend some time shopping. Same shit, different town. Grand Lake, Shadow Mt Res and Lake Granby are a must as well. Weather is clearing and tomorrow or Tuesday should be perfect for a day trip. Don't forget your camera.

Take the peak to peak hwy to Ward. This town is a throw back to the 1960's, full of pot smoking hippies. Follow it down left hand canyon and will drop you off just north of Boulder. You could also go through Nederland and follow Boulder canyon down. Oh, fish the stream on the way down.
