I've run ocean forest and happy frog. Happy frog is a more user friendly medium I think, ocean forest can be a little hot for seedlings. You can run happy frog beginning to end. A 50/50 mix of both would be solid too

I ran known cuttings in ocean forest , happy frog and both 50/50 too and every round the ocean forest (with at least 25% large perlite added) showed better yield and quality.

The reason they innoculate happy frog is to make up for its shortcomings and lack of organic matter. It is their budget potting soil.

At transplant though with 50/50 mix the roots looked fantastic. But the of alone still beat that plant.

I had even better results in the new sunlight supply mothers earth groundswell and it has plenty of perlite already. Maybe a little too much if you want to water less often.

But around me it is easier to buy fresh ocean forest.

Nice plants! But if โ€œhotterโ€ mix means more nutrients ocean forest has way more stuff in it than happy frog. Problem with happy frog is its even denser than ocean forest and causes drainage issues more easily which is what i think happens with many growers with ocean forest and young plants to. Overwatering.

And the issues in early flower are from fertilizing before the soil is depleted. I am more guilty of that.

im a ocean forest man when it comes to my medicine,i think a lot of issues that arise from ocean is the addition of the perlite, hear me out,the bag and mix is already what it is,doesnt perlite have lime in it also?some do,so if adding more air to there product they stand behind, isnt that altering the mix,i just have that thought,im by no mean sure, but altering the mix would rise the ph or nutes right ,maybe thats were i keep hearing ocean is to hot,i cant say that,i grow every thing in it,from fish bone roots to harvest,or seed to harvest,if any thing at all i think needs work is adjustments made for P and K balance come flower just saying,if the stuff was cheaper i would run the stuff in all my veggie gardens i love it

Perlite is nuetral. No lime in it. You may not need perlite for your conditions. If the pots dry out fine without it great. But in my 75 degree indoor room until the plants are mature they dont dry out quickly enough for me. So i add enough large perlite to make that an average of 3 days. In summer when im fighting heat i need less perlite for the same results.

Also this added drainage for me needs to be large perlite. Too much small perlite added will actually help hold more water and nutrients rather than help more with fast drainage.

So im saying the perlite is good for fertilizing. Easier rinsing of medium and faster wet dry cycle. Customizable to your conditions.

i cant use it here,i be out twice a day watering, pea gravel or small cut wood chips what i use for drainage, just thought i would throw that in there, ive heard the perlite thing and lime more times than i can count on this site,im o chemist so cant say one way or other, but those saying it to hot have to be altering the ocean mix some way,for them yto keep saying it hot,im a weird bastard,i only feed my plants when they tell me too, dont use many ferts at all,i cook all in and just water, been out last 2 days filling all my containers with new soil ive cooked for last 6 months, there should be laws of having fresh fine soil just sitting there with nothing growing in it hahahahh

Yeah i dont listen to much I read on the forums. I research everything outside of the silly weed industry. Believe it or not pro mix (premier horticulture) has a learning center on the website that has much better container growing info than most sites.

For example i have posted this before about growing mediums. I think also a lot of problems are because the soil used is not fresh. Old soil is highly degraded. Especially ammended organic style potting soil.

i wouldnt go that far hahahh, ive already built 40 yrds of soil to fill this 4ft drop on the corn bed,so hot this tree got so top heavy with acorns,it dropped right on the bed,PM has wiped me out this year main reason i decided to rebuild all beds boxs and totes, when the little corn i have is done i got at least 50 yrds more to build just for that ground bed, then to fill rest of the bottom bed, hahahh neighbor tied his fence right into mine,i had a fit ,so instead of shit in his cornflakes,i decided it time for a survey, that one corner post on left side of ground bed is the property line,so i decided the fence is shit, gave it to him and the rise is 4ft on back side,i moved all up 4ft and rebuilding as the old ass let me,i also decided that since there is such a drop ,4ft,that that rise was perfect for 2x8 all water leveled and gonna run pvc pipe all the way around the garden were i can t into water were i wanted, the IBC tote is what i mix my nutrients in a feed the garden when needed it dont flow for shit unlevel,so since there is no pressure on the line ,so no glue, every 4ft a t with a water hose fitting in ,move them were ever i need it
