Has anyone also noticed that as I'm in my second seasonal grow with my cob setup and that the plants are maturing at a faster rate than "Normal"? I'm at 38 days bloom with Black Bubba, & Purple D. (both Humboldt seeds) and have one cola with some amber on it already, the plants overall are into a pronounced fade. I'm watching them and will chop no matter what the timing says, just based on the color of the trichomes. I think I left my crop last year go too long waiting on the days...thoughts?

I grew under cobs and now I have QB led's, and yes I see flowering time 1 week sooner with most strains.

Read an interview with DJ Short and he recommended it. Been doing it ever since. Might switch back to 12/12 at some point but it seems to be working pretty well so I’ve not adjusted my photoperiod since.

I’ve done this late but do you rock 11/13 most of the way through?
It seems that cmh and leds do ripen the plant faster. I assume throwing a perfect old school mh/hps ratio spectrum would also do this just less efficiently. I flower with hps and a few 5000k led watts. I noticed keeping a bit of blue helping, especially for finishing up. For simplicity i hope to grab several vert 315 s with those sexy Philips bulbs. And say 400 watts of cobs. Qb/couple t5 s for veg. prob run my hps at 600-750 still for the dank orange/reds once and a while for nostalgia

11/13 reduces flower time. I did a tent grow at 12 12 and then reduced a bit every week. It was critical mass and it was ready in 6 weeks. Fasted I ever had a plant ripen.

I think flowering at 11/13 from the start reduces flower by about a week. It might have small effect on overall mass compared to 12 12 but 1 week sooner is probably a greater advantage.

Is the 12 12 setup for de hps or something? I actually considered doing 11 or 10 hours because the last 2 hours my plants look tired sometimes. I just dialed the light back 10% and all was good though.

I was listening to a shango los? Podcast might even of been Adam Dunn, but the conversation was light intensity and how many photons per day your plant can obsorb, I believe they came to the same conclusion that with more intense lighting you need less of a light period.

Ah it was probably tad Hussey with fluence oh his podcast.

It makes alot sense I'll give it a shot

I do it with my quantum boards. Still trying to get it dialed in. It’s just hard to find the sweet spot sometimes. I run my 260w board at about 170-180 watts with a canopy about 12-14” below it.

I’m not certain that 11/13 all the way through would be beneficial to potency and all that but who knows. I have heard of folks who purposely slow the flowering (maybe they think it increases potency, who knows)
Now I have to try this 11/13 all or most of way through and see if I like it. I’ve noticed lately a few plants, while the others look “tired”, they are perked and reaching tho the light even as the timer clicks the light off.. some look done for the day hours before that happens. (I’m running like 10 diff strains for mixed pack mishaps journal)
So I’m thinking some strains would prefer different photoperiod. Interesting.. so if you had rooms of different strains they could all be on the perfect period for them

It does shave time off flowering for sure. Growing a 60 day strain I’m seeing them finish in about 45-50 days. Pulling about 2g/watt. Using both a 11/13 photoperiod and a far red puck for the Emerson effect. And that’s with AK47 so it’s not a heavy yielder but it holds its own. I’d say on a scale of 1-10 it yields about 7-7.5.

And that’s in limited space mind you. My entire grow rack uses roughly 260 watts (when flowering lights are on, minus 171 watts when they are off) running two led light setups, 2 fans and a 4” inline fan vented through a carbon scrubber. So I’m pulling decent numbers considering I’m all organic in soil and not hydro.

I pay less than $20/month in electricity to run the entire rack.

I did some math and my all in cost per oz produced is $4/oz. That includes nutrients, soil, tap water and electricity.

All in all I’m very impressed with the hlg quantum boards, growmau5 far red puck and a 11/13 photoperiod.

I know I sound like an infomercial and I’m not trying to. It’s just shocking how efficent things have gotten over the years. And the results are as good or better than ever.

Increasing the dark period saves energy consumption for one. It's possible the idea of a longer dark period promotes longer thc production. I believe I've read that the plant produces THC during the dark period. An extra hour of gland, resin production may be why the11/13 is being implemented. I've been running that schedule only to ensure a solid dark period. Not sure if it's been helping, but after multiple runs, seems to have the indica dominants ready in 8wk or less. Not sure if that makes any sense.

There’s nothing wrong with being honest what has worked for you. If it comes across like an infomercial, that just says somethin about the products or methods your on about. Thank for the info. You as well @OldSmokie76

I’m using BioBizz and Primordial Solutions. It’s just PS is highly concentrated and doesn’t require much when used as an additive and BioBizz lasts a while when you don’t hammer the plants with them. Less is more IME.

Right now I’ve got 10 plants in flowering in 2 gallon pots. That’s 20 gallons of soil total. At roughly $16/bag it’s not very expensive. I use about 1 bag per cycle. I do add Worm Castings and some bat guano to it as well as some added Perlite. But I bought a massive bag of Perlite about 6 months ago for $15 and it should last me a few years. The large bag of Worm Castings was $20 and that should last about 5-6 rounds. The bat guano I use 2 tbsp per gallon in my flowering mix so it will last me at least a year for one 5lb bag. When you add it all up it doesn’t cost me a lot in nutrients to run. And now I’ve cut out Calmag in place of straight Epsom salts to combat phosphorus lockout which is all too common when using Calmag due to the added calcium (that’s not needed most of the time) and added nitrogen.

So you add it all up and it might cost me at the most $5-$6/oz to produce in a highly efficent growing environment.

Now I will say I did go top of the line everything as far as equipment goes just to achieve these results. But the lights should last many many years and I can still turn them up another 20% or so if needed.

With growing equipment it pays to spend a little extra time doing your homework and finding good products to use vs winging it on a prayer.

loving this...i'm a geek so forgive me for butting in on a neat brainteaser. plants finishing sooner can't be from fuller spectrum per se, because sunlight doesn't shorten finishing time. from my very beginning kindergarten understanding of LEDs, i'm guessing it's because you've optimized lighting, bringing out the plant's fuller potential?

In my case it’s a combo of the shortened photoperiod and using far red leds to simulate the Emerson effect. I just chopped a 60 day strain at day 51 with amber trics. Could have taken her at day 47.

apologies again, but can't resist. the quick review i did of the literature on LEDs' potential says exactly what you're hypothesizing. each species, each strain, each PHENO wants different ratios of spectrum and different durations, etc. dialing in beyond anything i've ever seen!

That is a real interesting point. But hps has limited blues and no uv really compared to sunlight or cmh.

So maybe hps increases flowering time. Because i ran 3 rounds of 3 known cuttings to test.

By the way.

Best results for quality and yield were using both hps and cmh overlapped.
