sticking your finger in the soil is completely useless.. that along with germinating seeds with paper towels needs to go away and be forgotten about..
How do you germinated seeds? I put them in a cup of water and then move to a damp paper towel. Usually have at least 75% germ rate although Ive only done it twice

Pretty much just a bucket with a hole on the side with a small reservoir at the bottom and once the roots make it there the growth explodes. People use basically just coco or perlite sometimes with some vermiculite mixed in or all 3 mixed together. It's kind of hydro
i have the same issue that you the bottom 2 or 3 inches will be wet and the top 7 inches dry but
if your not rich and cant buy the expensive shit these other guys have there all gonna tell u your is trash , even if you weigh your pot and it weighs 4 lbs dry and you weigh wet and it shows 6 lbs there still gonna tell u to water 12 cups of water dont worry tho in a few days they will all have a different opinion on your issue like on my post 1 day it was cal mag the next day overwatered and the next day not watered enough all from the same guys lol

Its a guage, stick it in a new bag of soil to get a reading, probably in the middle of the dial, water the soil gets a max reading, wait a few days it goes down, let it dry til the plant droops to see a baseline. An inexpensive tool, the triple guage double prong ones usually break so i have the ten inch single prong to pinpoint water dispersion in soil, particularly in the root ball.

I have the same meter, it works great. How wet/dry your medium is depends alot on the medium. I run soil but this round added more large perlite. It needs to be watered way more often. I don't let the meter drop below the half way mark. My last grow, soil had less drainage, so i waited to the meter said almost completely dry. There are rarely black and white answers when you are growing anything

but did you stick in down to last 2 inches of medium and get the same reading you did half way down

I use tall pots, i stick the meter all the way in, the bottem is around 2-3 inches from the bottom. There was a guy on here that would make a small whole towards the pot of the pot and measure horizontal. The entire metal portion reads the soil, not just the tip

Has anyone ever used this moisture meter? What number dryness should I let the meter get to before watering again?
Strain dependent. I've read while browsing seeds description some strain you can't let the soil dry where some prefer the wet dry cycle. Weed science is very inconsistent you just gotta keep a close eye while applying the knowledge yiu have as best as you can

Learning from others: the reason why I'm on this forum.

Learn from my mistakes: the reason I purchased the moisture meter which uses no electronics.

I don't know anyone who farms and I'm learning this all on my own with tips from some experienced people on this forum. My problem was being too attentive and watering too much.

Thanks for your amazing input
I'm from a third world country where everyone farms and electronics are almost non existent. How in the alchemy did they stay alive? Being attentive! And learning from your mistakes, or others if you're smart πŸ˜‰
